Lance Armstrong is 1 second from the lead, and it's the mountain stage now, where he is strongest.

My be is on a five-peat

I'm sorry... I don't buy this whole thing about him being great because he came back from cancer.

He had Testicular Cancer which isn't all that serious. Your testi will swell up into the side of a melon before it spreads so you'll be able to catch it while it's still in its early stages. All he did was have surgery and take his medicine... what's so special about that? I could understand if he was doing this all while winning the Tour de France, but this all happened long ago.

He's a great cyclist but he's not even better because he survived cancer.

Iggy, surviving cancer is a big deal. Anyone that can survive any type of cancer and then come back and perform as an athlete the way he has deserves a standing ovation.

He is probably the most dominant athlete of his generation. He is more dominant than Tiger Woods or even Michael Jordan (in his respective sport). NO way he will loose.

Lance Armstrong

i think the real question is will he be able to six peat? he is obviously the favorite at this point in the race and almost certainly on his way to victory. he has said he feels a little tired though. can he do it next year?

I understand what you are saying but in this case it is extraoridinary because when he was diagnosed the cancer had spread to his abdomen, lungs and brain and was only given a 50% chance to live. It is a great story seeing someone do so well at a very rigorous sport when at one point he didn't know if he was going to live or not.

Welp I would have to say that with cancer in the past or no cancer he is one of the best if not the best cyclist out there. I will see him winning this one this year but I have a fealing that someone will come up stronger next one.

7/19/03 update: as the Tour proceeds through the mountain stages,

Armstrong now has his largest lead, 34 seconds ahead of the 2nd place person.

He was never that far behind, being only 2-5 seconds before entering the mountain stages, by far his forte

7/26/03 update: well, the stage is finally set.

Armstrong extended his lead to 76 seconds over second place Jan Ulrich as the time trials race ended.

Ulrich took a few risky moves in order to catch up, and in a very rainy race, he slipped and lost 11 seconds more.

Armstrong finished 3rd in the time trials, and the race is basically over, barring unforseen disaster.

Sunday's race is merely a formality

well, Lance has done it!!

wins 5th straight by a 67 second margin, closest ever for him, over Ulrich

he said he's coming back next year, determined to be even better!

what a fantastic race; too bad I didn't see a single minute of it

Don't forget Mario Lemieux he beat cancer also.

I hope he gets #6 next year but its gonna be tough just like he said. Everyone since his first one has gotten tougher and tougher. His lead this year wasn't as big as it has been in the past.

I think the cancer thing for Lance is a bit overhyped. After all it was only testicular cancer if I am remembering correct. Sure any cancer is an accomplishment to get over but I still think he gets too much recognition for it. The guy is a great cyclist but I feel like he only gets the hype because of cancer instead of his 5 consecutive Tour De France victories.

I think Lance will go down as one of the best athletes ever!!!

Read my earlier response in this thread. It was MUCH more than testicular cancer. It spread to his brain and was only given a 50-50 chance to survive. Lance is a perfect example of a fighter and a champion and to never give up.

well, since this Tour resulted in the narrowest margin of victory for Lance, he's said he's determined to make his 6th much less competitive with the other racers.

This guy is just plain amazing. On pace with Tiger Woods!!
