View Full Version : Server Move and Updates
greg bernhardt 12-09-2004, 01:20 AM I hopefully will find time tomorrow to move the site off Bryan's server on to mine. Between the DNS update and file/db move there may be some significant downtime tomorrow. If not tomorrow then the next day.
As far as the upgrade to vb3, I may have time this weekend to start, otherwise I'm fairly sure I can before the end of next week.
That's all for now, I thank you in advance for your patience!
tutall 12-09-2004, 01:48 AM just a question.. is there anyway this change could be made after the weekend? not a huge concern but i know that i personally and a lot of the others on this board use the weekend as the main source of time on the board and i find it a major inconvenience to be down on a saturday... if it is impossible to avoid i understand

That is a valid concern. Unfortunately I work and goto school all week so I don't have much time on the week days. However, if I do upgrade this weekend, I usually start around 10pm and then the downtime shouldn't last past 12pm the next day, and most people are not active them. Please tell me what you think.
tutall 12-09-2004, 02:39 AM well.. i cant speak for others but i am a college student also and the only time i have available usually is late at night.. but.. do what ya have to do i guess
palantri 12-09-2004, 01:50 PM Im just kinda worried that this update will be like the one on another board (SCS) which updated over a week ago and has not yet reopened- this and SCS are the two best boards I have found, and it looks like Ive lost the one- just hoping your update is more smooth than the SCS one was

BGray 12-09-2004, 01:53 PM No worries. I've personally moved SCF from 3 different servers and have had no more than a couple of hours downtime yet.
It shouldn't be any different this time. ;)

aug06 12-09-2004, 07:43 PM I have to agree with the weekend being a bad time..I love coming home on friday and knowing I can stay up later cuz I dont have to get up Saturday, so Friday and Saturday nights are my most active times here..but I guess I can go one weekend without it...just like palantri said...hope it dont take alot longer than expected. :)

aug06 12-12-2004, 07:48 PM Oh I also meant to ask this lastnight, but who is in control of the hobbybuddy site?..PLMK..not that it matters..just curious
Mike
BGray 12-12-2004, 08:20 PM Hey Mike,
The server move is complete (although it looks like we need to adjust the time on Greg's server).
I still have hobbybuddy and will continue to offer the free auctions as long as SCF wants them. ;)

Just wondering how can you tell you're on a completely different server? Is it possible you're on the same server but a different part? j/k
This may or may not be related but I thought this was kinda weird, too. On the main forum page, it says the last post in the "Announcements" forum was by BGray. But aug06 had the last post (its the post above). No big deal really. At least SCF is back up and running. That's the main thing.
tutall 12-13-2004, 01:40 PM first off let me start out by saying i am not pointing fingers at anyone, blaming anyone.. attacking anyone BUT..
i was extremely disappointed with the events of this weekend... having this site down for over 24 hours, in my eyes is unacceptable. now, i am in college and working a full time also so i know how that is but wow... i was frustrated when i got on saturday evening around 6:00 pm and found the site was down.. no big deal, i headed out to play some ball.. get back around 10... still down.... once again, no big deal... try again, 11, 12, 1, 2 still nothing... wake up sunday, 11-12-1-2-3 still nothing...
again.. i know nothing about you greg so this is not personal i just wish better judgement could have been used and kept the site down during a less traffic day. Christmas break is coming and i am sure site upgrades and other events could take place. the site was running fine so was there really a neccesity of switching servers this weekend?
i dont know.. it was just frustrating that on the one night i could spend sitting at my computer and not worrying about anything else it was down. and the next day.
one of the main reasons i have stayed exclusively at SCF is because it was never down. i have heard stories about sites such as the bench and scs oging down for a couple hours or days at a time and had never experience that before here.. this is the only site i use and i just found it kinda ridiculous that it was down for at least 24 hours
again just a rant but no one else would say anything
BGray 12-13-2004, 01:54 PM tutall,
I personally moved the site myself. In addition to having some problems getting started once the site was ready to be moved I had some serious personal issues to attend to.
I had to rush my dog to the emergency animal clinic because she had a siezure. Not something I probably would have mentioned here but I am one of those people that truely considers my dog a best friend. I thought at one point I was going to have to put her down this weekend which was very traumatic for me and to be honest the server move just wasn't my top priority at the time.
With that said I understand your frustration. However, this is a Free site and although I normally get these moved off w/o a hitch 24 hours is not unacceptable.

tutall 12-13-2004, 01:57 PM ok thanks for the update.. i didnt realize other things were involved.. i just assumed since nothing was mentioned everything was as planned and it just took a long time..
nothing personal was meant however :)
Mitch
BGray 12-13-2004, 02:02 PM No personal offense taken. ;)
If anything I guess it would be a compliment. I've always tried my best to keep our server down time to an absolute minimum. This one would have been the same if it weren't for my personal issue.
Just wanted to let everyone know what happened and let everyone know that I was responsible for the server move, not Greg.

A good amount of the downtime was due to the DNS propgation which in my experience takes a good day, nothing we can do.
