Well, Topps isn’t the only sports card producer in the cage anymore.
In June, Razor Collectables let slip that it was producing a stand-alone mixed martial arts set and is now touting it as the “first-ever, high-end MMA product” to hit the market. Early reports point to a Sept. 22 release date.
According to Leaf, the set will contain more than 100 fighters, including 40 of which don’t currently have a sports card. They claim to have Fedor Emelianenko’s first card, although collectors are well aware “The Last Emporer” appeared in a Pride Fighting Champioship set produced in Japan in 2006.
Regardless, Leaf promises other such star names as Brock Lesnar, Shane Carwin, Georges St.-Pierre, Forrest Griffin, Randy Couture, Gina Carano, Rich Franklin and “King” Mo Lawal. Topps’ agreement with the UFC will keep the fight company’s logo from appearing on the Razor product.
The company has scheduled to release 599 cases in the U.S., as well as an international version limited to just 99 cases. Collectors on several Web sites are already discussing how they will obtain these international version cards (mostly through on-line auction sales).
Each box will contain eight packs, which will include eight cards. There will be one autographed card in every pack, as well as seven base cards. Autograph variations include dual and quad autos, Champion Insert autos and rare autographed parallels numbered 1-of-1.
Internet pre-sells began almost immediately after the news of the product hit the world wide web. Many collectors jumped on the sales right away, paying upwards of $175 per box. Recently, the prices have dipped some with most in the $115-$140 range.
Details continue to be sketchy on the product and no checklist has been released to date.
