View Full Version : Should Pete Rose be let back into Baseball?
pwaldo 03-21-2003, 01:53 PM This has been a big topic lately and I'm still neutral on the whole situation. I don't know if he should be let back into baseball but I also feel that people has done worse than what he has done and baseball still accepts them.
How do you guys feel about it?
Qball76 03-21-2003, 02:02 PM I think he should be let back in, I think he has paid for his mistake and like you said there are alot who have done just as bad of things and they are still accepted...
plunge 03-21-2003, 02:09 PM You're not alone, feeling neutral. It's been so long that he's been banned that it doesn't mean much to me if he's not back in baseball. What would he be doing if he was still in baseball all this time? Probably in a cushy front office position in Cincinnati, getting involved with Reds players during spring training to teach youngsters how to slide head first into catchers without losing their teeth.
People have done worse. Look at Kirby Puckett. He's going to jail for assaulting women. That's more unacceptable than betting in my book.
Heartattaq 03-21-2003, 03:07 PM Ya I feel he should be, He wasn't the only one doing what he did, he just got caught. I think he has done enough for baseball to warrant lifting his ban. Like Plunge said you have players causing assault and other things much worse than what pete rose did.
gioperation 03-21-2003, 03:36 PM anybody should be in baseball when they have something named after them, the "pete rose slide" that's is what we all called it when we were kids it was the head first, and the put the H in hustle, oh yeah and they called him charlie hustle right, no players today got that name either, he gets back in baseball, cincy turns into a contender in my book if they will listen to him. Think about the winter when nomar spent a lot of time with Teddy baby, he hit .377, what happens if these young guys get to be around pete and him teaching.
I don't think any big league catcher want him back in baseball though. LOL

IggyWH 03-21-2003, 04:12 PM I still say he should be let back into baseball... I'm still iffy on letting him manage again though. He definitely deserves to be in the Hall Of Fame though.
stkmtimo 03-21-2003, 07:57 PM He should be let back in. He didn't do anything wrong, and even if he did he deserves a second chance. Not like he killed anyone. It was all a conspiracy, anyway.

j.e.lew 03-22-2003, 12:59 AM Thats the one thing... NO he should'nt be let back into baseball itself...But should be in the hall
Molina00 03-22-2003, 03:08 PM I don't know why people keep making "should Pete Rose be let in the hall of fame" topics when he obvious answer is yes.
Didn't one of the real old time players kill somebody and still get in the hall?
jdfan123 03-22-2003, 08:42 PM yes he should be let in it was a set up anyway nobody ever mentions that

Its not an obvious question since he's still not in the hall of fame. I just asked because I wanted to know everyone's reasoning for their decision.
cardinalfan15 03-23-2003, 01:12 AM I feel that Pete Rose should be a hall of famer and therefore should have the ban lifted. He should have to apoligize and admit he betted on baseball, and then maybe Selig could consider letting him manage again. I also feel that "Shoeless" Joe Jackson should be allowed back in and put into the hall of fame. Though he is dead, he still deserves to be in the hall of fame. If you need a reason, watch "Field of Dreams."
podstock 03-24-2003, 06:27 PM There's no way in heck Rose should be allowed into the Hall of fame.
1. he's been lying about gambling ever since he got caught.
2. does anyone here think that he only bet on baseball as a manager, that he didn't also do it as a player?
Also, I read Plunge's statement about Puckett assaulting women; and while that is not right, and Puckett should go to jail, what he did cannot be compared to Rose.
Puckett played the game honorably, and performed as best as he could. What he does in his personal life will be judged by the justice system.
Pete Rose bet on baseball, while he was a participant of baseball and could determine the outcomes of the games.
It would be a farce to let Rose in; but then again, we're again about Bud Selig here...who re-defines the definition of "FARCE"
thekingpin 03-25-2003, 12:27 AM Podstock... The Hall of Fame is not about who you are outside of the game. If they really took everything into account, why is Babe Ruth in the Hall? Afterall, he was also known to be an alcoholic and a wife beater! How about Ty Cobb? There are many people already in the HOF that did far worse things, even while a player, including gambling on baseball. Sure, he got caught before he got a chance to get into the HOF.
I guarantee you that had he not been banned so soon after leaving a player role for managing, he would have been a 1st ballot HOFer. If you don't want him to manage, that's fine... who cares... but he most definitely belongs in the HOF!
Podstock, honestly, how could you be ok with Puckett and against Rose? Assault is far worse than gambling...

Okay we don't need to turn this into a bashing topic. Everyone has the right to their opinion and I wanted to make this a friendly post.
Anyway I don't recall Babe Ruth being a wife beater. I knew he drank but never heard him being a wife beater. But you cannot compare Babe Ruth and Pete Rose. Pete Rose did something that's against baseball's rules and he has to pay the price for it. What I don't get is why is he banned from the HOF. That had nothing to do with what he did. He should be kept out of baseball (managing etc.) and let into the HOF. At least that's the way I see it.
thekingpin 03-25-2003, 03:32 PM I'm going to edit my other post a bit... I was pissed off when I wrote that... sorry guys. That's what happens when you have a long rough day at the office, hurt your shoulder at the gym afterwards, and come home to deal with a mother who can do nothing but complain... ugh! I need a vacation!
I agree with you PW... I see no reason why he shouldn't be in the HOF. A more appropriate punishment should be not being able to work as a manager. Let him work for the WWE at their Wrestlemania like he has for the past several years... and do other things like that ;)
