He was very overpriced but he was one of the best players on the team. MLB really needs to just contract this team.
plunge 03-22-2003, 10:32 PM I disagree. I read that article and I'm glad. Out with ze old, in wid ze new, ya? Having Vaughn would've limited a very valuable player who will probably be in the All-Star game: Aubrey Huff.
cardinalfan15 03-22-2003, 11:26 PM Greg Vaughn had a horrible year last year. 9.25 million is not a fair price to pay a guy that hit .163 with 8 home runs. By getting rid of Vaughn, Huff can now DH (doesn't have that great of a glove) and they can play someone who can produce and also play third base with efficiency (i.e. Jared Sandberg). My two cents.
plunge 03-22-2003, 11:30 PM Yeah, put Huff at 1B. He can't run that fast, maybe Magadan's or Olerud's speed. I see him as a consistent .300+ hitter for a long time.
john1170 03-23-2003, 12:11 AM Vaughn hasn't been good in a few years now. His best days are way behind him. Good move my the D'rays.
Molina00 03-24-2003, 08:09 PM I don't remember how he did in 2001 but I think '02 was his only bad year with them. You can't really knock 20-30 homers and 70-90 RBI. He was overpriced but they now have not a single big player on there stinking little team. Unless their pitching matures big time, they will always be the worst in baseball.
It's sad when your biggest name is Ben Grieve, If they haven't released him yet.

A shoulder injury will have adverse affects on your bat swing:p :D
john1170 03-24-2003, 11:21 PM The problem is he seems to be hurt all the time. Only way they are going to get better is to let the kids like Baldell and Crawford play.
thekingpin 03-25-2003, 12:03 AM I think this is the right move for the team. Finances aside... Pinella is building from youth... and that's his only hope, clean the slate, and start over.
cardcollector869 03-26-2003, 04:25 PM I agree with most that this was a good move for the D-Rays. Vaughn is getting old and his numbers have been horrible the past couple of years. Devil Rays, 2003 AL EAST CHAMPS!
stkmtimo 03-26-2003, 04:51 PM The Devil Rays can improve, they need more of a chemistry and some veteran players who can make the team work.

podstock 03-27-2003, 05:34 PM baseball, of the 3 major sports in U.S. (basketball and football), is in the worse shape.
It has an idiot, aka Bud Selig, for a commissioner.
It has a team that pays over $150M in team salary - Yankees; while another team pays $30M. How fair is this?
And it has a player who makes $25M a year, yet A. Rod has done as much to help the Rangers win as you or I.
The only good thing about baseball is going to ballpark fairly cheap, and drinking and eating with your buddies
leftyshan 03-27-2003, 05:36 PM Did you guys hear that prospect Josh Hamilton has left the team?
plunge 03-28-2003, 11:47 PM Did anyone read Tom Verducci's Tuesday column on SI.com? He wrote what's the problem with the offense: lack of plate discipline. Too much swinging. They should watch tapes of Bonds. The young players keep swinging, hardly take walks. And having Ordonez on board is not going to serve as an example in this department.
And regarding Josh Hamilton, I heard he left too and quietly and quickly put his card up for auction.
j.e.lew 03-29-2003, 04:14 AM The young players do that BECAUSE of Bonds, Sosa, A-rod, and a host of others. They see what others have done and think they can do that in their first year. The have no patience anymore. They need to mature and stop having everyone from their High school coach to us the collector saying there the next big thing! BEWARE OF THE HYPE!!!!!
stkmtimo 03-29-2003, 11:30 AM I agree with what j.e.lew is saying, its' a shame what has happened to these high school players.
