AP Exclusive: Medicaid for the middle class? (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110621/ap_on_bi_ge/us_health_overhaul_glitch;_ylt=ApckfN2v7FG6rx3l7iV 804es0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTN0MTA2ZDBrBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTE wNjIxL3VzX2hlYWx0aF9vdmVyaGF1bF9nbGl0Y2gEY2NvZGUDb W9zdHBvcHVsYXIEY3BvcwM0BHBvcwMxBHB0A2hvbWVfY29rZQR zZWMDeW5faGVhZGxpbmVfbGlzdARzbGsDYXBuZXdzYnJlYWth)

President Barack Obama's health care law would let several million middle-class people get nearly free insurance meant for the poor, a twist government number crunchers say they discovered only after the complex bill was signed.

The change would affect early retirees: A married couple could have an annual income of about $64,000 and still get Medicaid, said officials who make long-range cost estimates for the Health and Human Services department.

After initially downplaying any concern, the Obama administration said late Tuesday it would look for a fix.

Up to 3 million more people could qualify for Medicaid in 2014 as a result of the anomaly. That's because, in a major change from today, most of their Social Security benefits would no longer be counted as income for determining eligibility. It might be compared to allowing middle-class people to qualify for food stamps.

Medicare chief actuary Richard Foster says the situation keeps him up at night.

"I don't generally comment on the pros or cons of policy, but that just doesn't make sense," Foster said during a question-and-answer session at a recent professional society meeting.

"This is a situation that got no attention at all," added Foster. "And even now, as I raise the issue with various policymakers, people are not rushing to say ... we need to do something about this."

They say they're looking for a fix...great. My issue is over a year later, we're still finding out about things in this bill. Why was this passed if this was an issue? One of the most ill-conceived and poorly designed pieces of legislation ever...

Goes to show you how much they actually pay attention to these things. I doubt anyone that voted for it actually even read it. Any strain on the American economy due to this idiotic "oversight" should come directly from the politicians pockets that passed it.

Do you really think that politicians actually read this things? They have people to do that for them and then they get a briefing on the overall idea of the bill. Anyway, this is a waste of our money, helping people that can afford some sort of health care on their own without the help of the government.

I'm not even mad at it. All of congress makes more than $64k per year. Most if not all of them have their insurance on the tax payer dime. Why can't the middle class get back something that they paid into over the years? It really makes me mad that the same congressmen who fight against the taxpayers getting healthcare have their own healthcare paid for by the taxpayers. Yes Obama's plan is not perfect but it sure beats having to drop dead because you have no insurance.

Just sounds like a loophole, which you can find in almost every piece of legislation ever passed. I am sure there are more to be discovered. Not newsworthy at all.

as long as they fix the loop hole it won't be an issue.

The idea should be to close loopholes such as this one not exploit them...

I think Obama is the worst President ever and that every piece of legislation that passes underneath his pen is just another step in the socialist takeover of the United States. We're all doomed. Somebody get me my tinfoil hat.

I don't trust anybody else's tinfoil hats. Was it made in America? Did it cross over the border illegally? What are it's views on the debt ceiling? I'll be darned if I wear a communist hat.

No, sadly it was made in Canada by migrant Newfoundlanders desperate for work due to the ban on cod fishing. By default that makes it a socialist hat made by very sociable people. :)

NEWFIES! I knew it! Those Newfies are going to take over the world. Probably lead by Dan Cleary (he's from Newfoundland, right?). BOMB NEWFOUNDLAND!
