View Full Version : 02-03 Rookie cards
BGray 03-23-2003, 11:32 PM A lot of basketball rookie cards are starting to make thier move a couple of years after the player is a rookie (mostly because there are a lot of really young players). Who of this years class do you see being a performer in the long run?
Which card in particular do you feel will be the cornerstone for this years rookie class down the road?

stkmtimo 03-24-2003, 08:36 AM I think the real players this year are:
Caron Butler
Dajuan Wagner
Casey Jacobsen
Amare Stoudamire
I think the Yao Ming hype is a fad. He's a decent player, but he doesn't deserve all the hype. Just my opinion.

radioheadfloyd 03-24-2003, 11:41 PM Bgray,
I have been wondering about that myself. It seems that it is so hard to figure out the good RCs anymore because they do come out so young in Basketball and the other sports release the cards before they ever make the "Big Leagues".
This class seems to have quite a few good ballers, I think that Amare and Yao going to have great futures and guys like Gooden and Butler are doing well too. What I have been wondering is who is going to be the "sleeper". I think the Wagner cards are underpriced b/c he is not getting any attention and living outside of Denver I see a lot of Nugget games (unfortunately) :) and I think that Hilario has a lot of potential (Karl Malone type) and the Nuggets may actually have a winning team very soon. (Lottery pick plus 27 million under the cap, New ownership, GM etc.
podstock 03-28-2003, 12:10 AM Bgray - I vote Yao Ming.
You can't teach size. If, as a basketball player, you have no peer, then there's no one to defend you.
That's why Shaq is so good. All other centers are too weak to muscle with Shaq.
I was just watching Tracy McGrady go up against Kevin Garnett this evening. Garnett did a great job on T-Mac, b/c of his size, length, and quickness.
Likewise, you can defend Kobe with someone who's lengthy and quick, like Andrei Kirilenkov of Utah Jazz.
But for Yao Ming, if there's no one left who's 7'2" in the next few years, how will Yao be defended?
So, I vote Yao.
leftyshan 03-28-2003, 12:20 AM I like Dajuan Wagner,Amare Stoudemire,Drew Gooden and Manu Ginobili.
Garycolemanx 03-31-2003, 02:35 AM Wagner will be amazing one day, Cavs just got to gove him time. I personaly think they should trade him,he will prob fit in much better on a different team. He is a cornerstone, he will be hott propertey in cards and will be an all star in the leugue one day.
lakerswiz 04-06-2003, 01:03 AM I collect any and all Kareem Rush. #21 Guard on my Lakers! Winning a championship in your rookie season has to feel great!
My favorite card is my 02-03 Topps Pristine Refractors Common Kareem Rush #'ed/1899 enclosed. It is sooo nice.
pwaldo 04-08-2003, 08:09 PM Amare Stoudamire
Yao Ming
Stoudamire cards should go up and remain high for the long term. This guy has the talent to be very good in a few years. Yao because there are very few good centers and he should be able to dominate once Shaq is gone.
podstock 04-08-2003, 08:11 PM Let's hope Amare stays healthy and doesn't get the "Vince Carter" syndrome.
Sheesh, Carter sits with any ache and pains. Perhaps Kobe oughtta have a chat with him

BGray 05-28-2003, 10:33 PM Cardtrader, See your PM!
gioperation 05-29-2003, 01:56 AM damn I remember this thread and no one talked about prince as when I pulled a couple of his cards in the hobby shop and the owner and I both laughed, who is this bum...lol shows exactly what we know, huh
j.e.lew 05-29-2003, 02:56 AM I hate basket ball, But I'll Go out on a limb and say Wagner.
mjblaze 06-02-2003, 09:18 AM Yao, Stoudemire, Wagner, Ginobili, Gooden, Butler, Jay Williams, Qyntel Woods (yes), and Nene Hilario will all pan out well, barring any serious injuries. This has the makings of a great draft year.
reezy 06-02-2003, 02:28 PM I think wagner, butler and williams will be the eventual long term studs of this draft.
Other sleepers include Rush, Qyntel Woods, Hilario and WILCOX.

LeBron23Cavs 06-02-2003, 03:48 PM DaJuan, Amare, Gooden , and Butler will have good careers i thikn, and maybe Ginobli. I don't like all the hype bout yao, ya 12 or 13 points per game is good, but for a guy his size he should average a lot more and way more boards. Just my opinion.
Thanks
-matt
P.S. i know this is late but...CAVS GOT LEBRON!!
AlwaysaBucksFan 06-02-2003, 10:14 PM Amare Stoudemire is awesome and will continue to grow and has potential to become a superstar. He is great fun to watch. A very over looked player in my eyes is Marcus Haislip. He plays with alot of confidence and desire to be good at this game and given time to mature he will be awesome. Keep an eye on him. :wow:
ILuvSportsCards 06-02-2003, 10:28 PM Marcus Haislip will learn very quickly. He will improve greatly and surprise a lot of people...plus the guys is huge, you is unstuppable in the post if he develops his game.
suspense27 06-03-2003, 03:02 PM amare of course will be good , yao , prince and a name not many have said if any but jaun dixon will excell and actually shine
YankeePride 06-05-2003, 12:06 PM Amare & Yao aren't secrets, they're not worth mentioning.
Tayshaun has too much hype right now. Let the playoffs end, when baseball is the only game, then do Ebay searches. There aren't many offensive options for Detroit, so he can get a lot of points.
Jay Williams does now, and will in the future, suck. He is yet another over-hyped, over-rated Dukie who didn't develop a pro game. Why do these prospects go there? The only ones who amount to anything are the ones who have left after no more than 2 years.
Caron Butler is still a great value, and his upside is trememdous. I think comparisons to Paul Pierce are accurate - he can become a franchise player.
I don't understand how Wagner is such an unknown right now. I know he was hurt a lot, but look at the points he put up. A good sleeper buy.
DCbear 06-05-2003, 04:44 PM Too many people overlooking Caron Butler. He's gonna score a lot of points in Miami. I have a 2002-03 Topps #194 Caron Butler Miami Heat rookie card that I hope increases in value.
