A majority of Britons back the restoration of the death penalty, according to a survey out Sunday, as a petition looks likely to force lawmakers to debate the issue.

In a Survation poll for The Mail on Sunday newspaper, 53 percent said they wanted capital punishment back, with 34 percent opposed.

While 63 percent of men back the move, only 44 percent of women are in favour.

Mass murder, child murder, terrorism and war crimes were deemed the main offences deserving the death penalty.

Britain's last hangings were in 1964 and capital punishment was abolished for murder in 1969.

Interestingly enough, the majority of Canadians (about 66%) agree with the concept of capital punishment but less than 50% want to bring it back.

Sweden wishes they had it.

Bring it back for extreme cases like the forementioned mass murder, child murder, terrorism, war crimes as well as hate crimes. Also not just a cowardly lethal injection but subject the defendant to the levitical concept of an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.

an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.

Ahhh, good ol' Hammurabi's Code.

A poll in the most right wing paper in the UK? Well it must be true we Brits want to bring back capital punishment. Typical Mail readers, they want to drag the country back to the 1950's.

Sweden wishes they had it.

Why?

As with everything, public opinion is based on current events. Give it a week or two and they will all be against it again.
