View Full Version : Should Wells be released?
plunge 03-25-2003, 09:46 AM Considering the surmounting tension that's building in the Yankees organization and the disrespect Wells is showing to his team, should he be released? Can any player be allowed to get away with what Wells has done? Both Torre and Cashman are deeming Wells' behavior as disrespectful. Aside from this being the Yankees organization, is this acceptable in MLB?
stkmtimo 03-25-2003, 02:44 PM I'm a diehard Yankees fan and I can't stand him. I hope they release him, he's worthless to the team.

IggyWH 03-25-2003, 02:53 PM Yeah, they're best pitcher and always a big game pitcher is worthless to the team.
thekingpin 03-25-2003, 03:40 PM Be realistic guys... they've invested too much into Wells to let him walk. I think they should give him some crazy creative punishment to make him really learn that he was stupid. Maybe have him run around the outside of the stadium from the 2nd inning through the 7th inning stretch of every game that he isn't pitching in? He'd likely learn his lesson, and lose some weight in the process.
plunge 03-25-2003, 04:06 PM For the dignity of the organization and the management of the organization, like for any major league ball club, Wells' insubordination should not be condoned. If he's going to be held accountable, $100K wasn't enough. I think he's sending the message that he wants to be traded, but the way he's doing it is in a crash & burn fashion that will make him hard to get picked up by another team. Who wants someone who has the potential for doing what he's done to the Yankees?

I'm going to have to disagree here. He won 19 games last year and has always been a big game pitcher for the Yankees. He is in no way worthless to the team.
Who cares what he says or does? The team kept Strawberry and look what that guy was doing. There are a lot worse people in baseball other than David Wells and people should be use to his behavior by now.
As long as he performs well he will stay with the team.
plunge 03-25-2003, 05:17 PM I'll agree with you with the number of games he's won. And if he doesn't put up those numbers again: that's it. He'll get the boot.
Steve Howe, Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry have all received clemency by the Yankees organization when they were in dire straits. But none of them have caused dire straits with the team. That's what makes Wells different and so vulnerable.
gioperation 03-25-2003, 05:41 PM nothing is going to happen with wells besides the fine, the yankee's don't care about that and guess what that is NY City for you, where everythings goes and just like vegas the city doesn't sleep, every ballplayer I know loves to go to NY, because they can party and their wives can shop.
Hell if he pitched the game drunk, that would be a problem the would have to address, we haven't read the book yet, or at least I haven't so who knows if the comments were taken out of context like they usually are.
Remember it was the media who is making a big deal out of it, why it sells newspapers and ad space.
why haven't we heard about the fight with vizquel and mesa anymore, why because it was Cleveland, if it was NY, we would still be hearing about it. Mesa said he wants to kill him, he could arrested for that statement again it is not NY. plus everyone in the world know he choked, so I guess it is old news.LOL

stkmtimo 03-25-2003, 06:18 PM Wait until the Yankees get killed this year, and Wells has a terrible season. Then we'll all see how worthless that idiot is. Now his next attack victim is Steinbrenner, Well is a moron. He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.

Bingo. If he puts up the stats then he will be safe. I'm hoping that he can and if he does then he's not going anywhere. If he does struggle and the Yankees struggle he will be gone. Traded? Yes but not released.
jdfan123 03-25-2003, 07:09 PM have to agree with pwaldo wells has to much talent to release and the yankees have always thrived on this type of controversy
leftyshan 03-25-2003, 11:34 PM Wells shouldn't be released. He's a winner. I hope he retires in pinstripes. This will all blow over when Godzilla shows up in NY.
thekingpin 03-26-2003, 01:46 AM There have been scandals throughout baseball, current and past. There will be more in the future. I agree that because all of this happened to a NY player, it was a big deal. But it wasn't just a NY player, it was a NY Yankee... and it was Mr "I pitched a perfect game" Wells. He isn't a cheap player either. The team will likely look to dump his salary via a trade, possibly as early as mid-season, unless he keeps getting drunk and throwing well before games. It's always the media, and people like us that keep these crazy things alive... if we all shut up about it, nobody would care...
