With decades of history between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, the greatest rivalry in hockey has many interesting and intriguing facts and stats that help make the rivalry so compelling. Do you think you know your team? How much do you know about the other one? We want to test your Leafs and Habs knowledge, pushing your memory banks to the limit!

There will be one question asked every day. You will have until midnight Eastern time to answer it. A link will be provided each morning to the day’s contest question – all answers will be kept confidential to ensure that nobody can simply re-post another member’s response. All correct responses will be entered into a randomizer with a valuable point on the line every day. The member with the most correct answers at the end of the month will not only reap the benefits of scoring major points in The Ultimate Rivalry Contest, but they will also receive a free box of 2011-12 Upper Deck Series One, courtesy of our good friends at Upper Deck!

For more info on UD1, including preview shots of all the new Young Guns, check out the official SCF preview here: http://www.sportscardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1434454 and for all your UD information and news, check out their official website at http://www.upperdeck.com

Participation in SCF activity is an absolute must for a contest of this nature. To coincide with this monthly challenge you will be required to make at least 3 SCF deals in the month of November. These include trades or sales but not CC transactions (in other words, any deal must be feedback-eligible for both parties), and cannot be used for other contests being run on the site.

We also want you to check out our sponsor’s website: http://www.legendsdepot.com (http://www.legendsdepot.com/) and sign up to become a member. When you have registered with the site please confirm here with your user name created at the site. You are not obligated to purchase anything for the contest but we certainly encourage you to check out the fantastic auctions and items available for sale.

All members must be in good standing to be eligible to win The Greatest Rivalry, meaning:
- No serious infractions during the contest: a serious infraction is any infraction worth over 3 points – any serious infractions will result in disqualification from the contest.
- No suspensions: if you get suspended from SCF for rule violations during the contest, you are disqualified from participating.
- No negative feedback during the duration of the contest - any negative feedback received will be investigated by the SCF Dispute Team.
- You may only give one answer per day. Multiple entries from any contest will result in disqualification.

Participation in all contests is not mandatory but doing so will greatly increase your chances of winning.

Once again, a tremendous thank you to our sponsor and friends at Legends Depot for this amazing prize. Look for featured Legends Depot auctions and listings in the Hockey Forums throughout the season.

Thanks to everybody who answered the question for November 4th.

During his tenure as President of the Toronto Maple Leafs, what significant off-ice
change did Ken Dryden convince the National Hockey League to make to revitalize the Leafs-Habs rivalry, starting in the 1998-99 season?
Moved the Leafs into the Northeast Division so there would be more games.

Good job everybody!

I gotta say this isnt really a fair way to do a contest with the random. Should have just kept tallying all the points everytime a person got it right then had some sort of tie breaker at the end if there were a couple leaders

Reason im saying this is because if you think about it as fairness to everybody, and im going to use myself as an example here, I keep missing questions and this was only my third answered. If i managed by random to get a point 2/3 questions I answered its not really fair to he people who answered all 5 or 6 questions and got no points.

It's a trivia contest. With the accessibility of information online, it could end up being a 9-way tie at the end of the month because the answers are relatively easy to find. There's not really a simple way to decide it. "First one to get it right" wouldn't be fair because if you notice I tend to post these at a certain time and you're out east, you can just hover around waiting and get it right away before people on the west coast even have a chance to get out of bed and log on to the site.
I do appreciate the feedback but this has a lot of thought put into it already and was decided to be the most equitable way of awarding points without making this an excessive drain on my time.

xelloss1012
11-13-2011, 09:21 PM
Today's question got me doing a bit of research and came up with four topics.

About the randomizer, anyone can be picked. There is still over half a month left and anything is still possible. As a hockey analogy: It's still the second period with an apparent two-goal lead, but you cannot take the pedal off the metal as it's a 60-minute game. In a hockey game, a two-goal lead is rarely safe in this day and age...

Hey guys I don't want to start a fight was just making a joke

RGM81
11-14-2011, 07:58 AM
These open-ended questions are a lot of fun - you guys have reminded me of a couple things that I'd more or less forgotten/tried to block out of my memory banks.

There was one incident that got mentioned by a couple of people that was a bit of a stretch -- his arrest in Vancouver for punching a guy in a bar that was wearing a Habs jersey. In the interest of being nice, I did count that one even though it has virtually no bearing at all on the actual Habs-Leafs rivalry other than to stoke the flames amongst the fans.

There was another one that was mentioned that caused him some infamy -- not flying with the team before a game and instead going to talk to his agent -- but this was while he was still with the Canadiens. This is what prompted his trade to Toronto in exchange for college player Greg Pateryn. Because the question explicitly asked about incidents "since he was traded" and thus while with the Leafs, these responses are inadmissable.

Thanks to all again for participating!

Thank you to everybody that answered the question for November 16th. This one is a little on the tricky side - the Toronto Maple Leafs--as the Maple Leafs--have beaten the Habs 3 times in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, in 1917 they were simply the "Toronto Hockey Club" and they beat the Habs in a 2-game series on aggregate goals. I will accept either 3 or 4, though I was looking for 4.

Thanks to all who entered for November 17th and correctly answered
334-280-88-8 Habs (W-L-T-OTL). Going into the season the Canadiens' official history page listed 334-279-87-7 - since the start of the 2011-12 season the Habs have lost twice to Toronto, once in regulation and once in OT.

A couple of you were close, but gave the Habs a victory this year (don't we all wish) over TO and that skewed the numbers away from you. Also, the Wikipedia page doesn't have the OTL category, which threw off the math for a couple people's response.

Thanks to everybody who participated in the trivia contest for November 19th!

"After winning the first game 60 the Canadiens may have been overconfident and the Leafs changed their tactics, riling up Richard in game two. Richard high-sticked (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-sticking) and injured Bill Ezinicki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Ezinicki) and Don Metz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Metz) earning a fine and a one-game suspension."

I don't care about that, just found it interesting who fell into the list.

However regarding the trivia month, I think I have been the only person that has qualified for a chance at a point everyday so far.

P.S.: I would like to see a Tide version with Bruins + Leafs on Before side, with Habs home + away jerseys on After side for greater showing... :)

I did not see anything about a tie breaker in the first post, but if I did happen to finish first (luck will be required) and was tied with somebody else......I'd gladly split the box with them..........I'd hate to see people tied for first at the end of the contest only to have the outcome be decided so abruptly in a contest which took a month to play. Even if 3 people finished first.....that'd be 8 packs each wouldn't it?? Just my thought. A job well done to all participants and especially the staff who dedicate their time and efforts to our entertainment.

RGM81
11-29-2011, 08:49 AM
Since the box is coming directly from UD to the winner (I think) that's not an option.

And hey, if baseball can decide the fate of a 162-game season on a one-day playoff, I think we can do the same with a bonus one day skill tester...if necessary.

Thank you to everybody that participated this past month! It was a lot of fun running this contest and I learned a few things while hunting for facts and questions. Good times.

The answer to the first question is: 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 - these are the numbers that have been recognized by both squads.

Toronto has honoured the following:
Johnny Bower (1959-70)
1 Turk Broda (1937-52)
4 Hap Day (1926-37)
4 Red Kelly (1959-67)
7 King Clancy (1931-37)
7 Tim Horton (1950-70)
9 Charlie Conacher (1930-38)
9 Ted Kennedy (1943-57)
10 Syl Apps (1937-48)
10 George Armstrong (1950-71)
17 Wendel Clark (1985-94, 1996-98, 2000)
21 Borje Salming (1973-89)
27 Frank Mahovlich (1957-68)
27 Darryl Sittler (1971-82)
93 Doug Gilmour (1991-97, 2003)

Toronto has retired these numbers:
5 Bill Barilko (1946-51)
6 Ace Bailey (1927-34)

Montreal has retired these numbers:
1 Jacques Plante
2 Doug Harvey
3 Emile Bouchard
4 Jean Beliveau
5 Bernard Geoffrion
7 Howie Morenz
9 Maurice Richard
10 Guy Lafleur
12 Dickie Moore
12 Yvan Cournoyer
16 Henri Richard
16 Elmer Lach
18 Serge Savard
19 Larry Robinson
23 Bob Gainey
29 Ken Dryden
33 Patrick Roy

The answer to the bonus question is #5 - Montreal has retired Boom Boom Geoffrion while Toronto has retired Bill Barilko.
