I read this after checking my email & it's Medicaid. It really is terrible that the government wants to cut programs that endangers the welfare of their own people & citizens.

Correlation does not imply causation. The headline is ridiculous, and the conclusion is irresponsible.

I agree, how do they come to that conclusion?

I read the entire article. Saw nothing that correlates suicides and welfare cutbacks.

People have to drive 160 miles for mental health care? Oh the horror! My dad drives that amount all the time to go to the VA hospital. Never stopped him. If people would rather kill themselves than drive for 2.5 hours to get help, then so be it.

Yep Veterans here where I live have to drive 4 hours to San Antonio for a full service VA for appointments, which I think is ridiculous for the people who fought to protect our freedoms & liberties let alone the other _____ overseas that we protect & try to bring democracy to!!

I love this forum. I bet the government says the same thing about it's mentally sick soldiers, just like people are talking in here about other Americans (especially mentally sick ones). God Bless America!

I welcome anyone to watch a show called Trapped: Mental Illness in America's Prison's. So people can get a general idea of would could happen if people who are poor or with mental illness's don't help they need. If you would like to watch the movie it's on Youtube.

while i don't like that people have to drive that far, we can't pretend there is an easy fix and no one is taking it. Would anyone be ok with the government building 100's of hospitals just so no one has to drive more than an hour?

What are we going to do if the rest of us have to start doing that. What happens when Obamacare fully kicks in and you cant find a specialist anywhere near you. It could get real interesting.

It is not the government's responsibility to provide free everything for everyone. These people need to either drive to where they can ge the care for free or pony up the cash for local care.

My dad risked his life to fight in a foreign country. If he doesn't have a VA hospital on the corner then there is no reason why anyone else should.

I respect what your father did for this country, BUT what you are doing is "passing the buck" and you and i both know it shouldn't have been this way and maybe it's time for a change?

What shouldn't be this way? Mentally ill people deserve free care? What ever happened to people taking care of themselves or their families doing it?

No, about your father having to drive so far away...you said my father had to do it so they should too...

Actually what I said was if he can do it then there is no reason that they can't either. In other words, if veterans don't deserve special local hospitals and care, then why does anyone else?

Actually that's what you said in a totally different paragraph...

wait, are you saying their should be a specialist of every kind within 5 miles of everyone? you do realize that makes zero economical sense or any other kind of sense right?

Same difference. If veterans don't deserve one then nobody does. If veterans have to drive 2-4 hours for health care then there is no reason that everyone else can't.

If you see that as me saying that mental patients don't deserve health care then that is your spin, not my words.

You can look at it any way that you want. My position remains the same. If a veteran who risked their life for our country doesn't deserve a government provided hospital and health care that is easily available, then nobody else does.

But honestly this post shouldn't be a surprise to anyone in this country that actually knows America's history...since the same thing was done with Vietnam Veterans in this country by the Government and the American people...

i am actually pretty informed on the issues of mentally ill in this country and you and I probably agree on most things. However, you seem to be saying that we need to have hospitals close enough for everyone to have availability. I am just asking you to clarify instead of your little passive aggressive "ya, because that's what i said" junk. if I misunderstood, please correct me.

There are also a lot of people in this forum, and in this country, who can't seem to grasp the concept that there is no more money. Our country is broke. We can not keep dumping trillions of dollars into welfare programs when we don't have trillions of dollars. Something has to give.

No, but we can continue to help foreign countries...:winking0071:

Don't you understand it's gonna get worse before it gets better?

America wants to keep pissing on the low and middle class and watch where this country continues to go...

More and more people are finding that they have "nothing to lose." Don't you think that's going to affect you and your family and friends in time? You are right about one thing, though, something does "have to give", i guess we will all find out what that is and enjoy the ride...

P.S. What was the "excuse" 10-15 years ago? Or for that matter since the 1960's...
