I had to come back and look at this a second time, dem21. I've been such a big Clemente fan, and by extension a Pirates fan, since I was a kid. He died a little over a year after I was born, so I never got a chance to see him play, obviously. But as I got older, he became one of my two favorite players (Robin Yount being the other).
I've always felt that Clemente didn't get the recognition he deserved while he was alive (nor did he). It's just ashamed that people didn't "get it" until the 1971 World Series. He was, in my opinion, the greatest right fielder to ever play the game. Yes, I know that Aaron and Ruth both played the position, and obviously both had better power numbers...but when you look at all the elements of the game, Clemente comes out on top in my opinion. As great a hitter as he was--.317 lifetime, 3,000 hits, 4 batting titles....nobody could touch him in the field, and thats where he separates from the others. His range was incredible. He caught everything (12 straight gold gloves), and his arm....you know it as a collector--was legendary. Nobody tried for an extra base on Clemente twice.
The thing I find so compelling about him...aside from the grace he showed on the field--was his passion for life. He did everything at 100%. He was so outspoken, even now some 40 years after his passing, he remains a huge role model for Latino children.
Thank you for sharing!
