I'm all for it.
Some counties here in Michigan have already made texting while driving a ticketable offense.

Indiana mad texting a ticketable offense, but only texting. If you are doing other stuff on your phone you are okay and an officer can't legally take your phone to see what exactly you were doing. waste of a law really.

Indianas was done more so that if you are involved in a serious accident and they can get your phone history you can be prosecuted for it. A couple months ago (before Indiana passed the law) I was driving through Michigan texting and got a ticket..... No idea it was even illegal... In fact that was the first I had ever heard of anything like it being illegal.
I dont agree with banning cell phones... A huge amount of the people on the road are using them and can drive and talk just fine.

Terrible idea. Just another liberty that the government wants to take away. Text and drive at your own peril. Having a law against it isn't going to affect behavior.

To those who are against it- if your entire family was killed by a teen who was texting/driving, would you still be against it?

while i understand your logic, it isn't a good argument. wrecks have been caused by people changing the radio station, eating food, talking on the phone, reading a book, etc. you can't make anything that has led to a wreck illegal.

They want a ban on all cell phone conversations, not just talking.
The National Transportation Safety Board recommended Tuesday that all states and the District ban cellphone use behind the wheel, becoming the first federal agency to call for an outright ban on telephone conversations while driving.
“No call, no text, no update, is worth a human life,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. “It is time for all of us to stand up for safety by turning off electronic devices when driving.”

Because data on cell phone use by motorists are limited, the range of uncertainty is wide, those researchers said. The estimate of fatalities in that HCRA report ranged between 800 and 8,000.

According to one estimate, cell phone use is a factor in 6 percent of all crashes, which equates to 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths each year
So... you estimate 6 percent of all accidents then take all other situations, multiply them by 6 percent and use those numbers as facts....

Thats my biggest problem with all of these laws people are making... Imnot saying there arent wrecks that happen because of cell phones but if safety is honestly your concern there are a lot of other things to ban with cell phones.... How about a ban on cold beer sales... or carry out beer sales... or smoking in the car, or drive thrus or radios in cars..... 10 years ago it was outlawing portable cd players in cars because people were looking at them and wrecked...
Plus... I would rather have my police force going after criminals and keeping my home and place of business safe than writing a kid a ticket for talking to his mom on his cell phone after school... Just a waste of time in my opinion

I am fine with it as long as there is some equality.
They need to also issue tickets for changing your radio station, talking to people in the car with you, lighting a cigarette, eating, drinking, applying make-up, rolling up/down your window, picking your nose and adjusting your mirrors.
All of these things require taking a hand off of the wheel and distract you from committing your full attention to driving so they all should be ticketable offenses.

as for police going after criminals- this would promote jobs. More cops needed to enforce laws=more police needed.

I can tell you here in Connecticut cell phones have been banned while driving for a while. They banned talking on them while driving first and then texting after (probably should have gone the other way around but I guess texting wasn't as big an issue initially. Hands free is still legal as far as I know it but they barely enforce any of this so it doesn't have a huge effect. People get tickets for it but not enough to really discourage it and you still see terrible drivers on their phone all the time.
9 times out of 10 when I see someone driving 60 in the left lane, drifting across their lanes, not signaling etc. it ends up being someone on their phone, fixing makeup, reading (yes it is crazy but I've seen it). I wish people would just have the common sense to know their limitations and realize they could kill not only themselves but plenty of other people from their carelessness.

Here in America people will do this and other dangerous practices with little regard having people or their children in their cars so they don't really care much about other people in other vehicles.

Like already mentioned, texting in Michigan while driving is not allowed already and I agree with it (I don't text while driving anyhow) but to ban talking on the phone would be silly. Yes, some people stink at multitasking or are horrid drivers to begin with, but should we ban singing in the car? Should we ban eating in the car? What is the difference between talking on the phone in a car and eating a sandwich in the car?

This is the point that I was getting at. I can dial contacts on my smart phone with one touch of my finger. It takes much longer and more of my attention to unwrap and eat a burger and fries.
Also, my phone has Talk2Text. I tap a button, talk into the phone just like I am having a conversation, it converts it to text, I hit send and it is done. With less effort than changing the radio station or rolling down a window I can send a text message.

I agree that the new smart phone has made things quicker and easier, but why not just pull over for a minute instead of taking a risk? Same goes with eating lunch behind the wheel or drinking a soda.

I often do pull over, especially if I have to have an in-depth conversation. My point was that making a phone call, in many instances, is less distracting and takes less time than eating a burger or changing radio stations.

Should people not sing in their car now while we're at it?
Texting/putting on makeup in the car while driving is dumb, but it IS possible to do other things and do it in a safe manner.
You must be the most perfect person ever though the way you are against almost anything. I mean I've never met anybody who goes the exact speed limit and never even goes 1 MPH over. Unless your going on cruise control which is more dangerous than speeding in a slower speed zone.
I'm still trying to figure out how even having hands free phone connection in the car would become illegal. It makes no sense

Not necessarily. For songs, if youre singing along, you pretty much know the song by heart. Its why people can do work while listening to music. For phone conversations, you dont know what is coming, so your brain has to listen closely and pay attention to the person on the other line.

The point remains the same though. You are focusing on singing the song, and you are focusing on talking to the person on the other line. I really don't think you understand the difference of using a phone in hte car (regardless if it's hands free or not) compared to doing other things in a car.
I'm sorry, i'd just prefer to not lose more rights because some people are horrible drivers and do stupid things.

OK, using the logic that is applied here, shouldn't GPS units be illegal to use while driving too?
Anyone who has used a talking GPS while driving knows just how distracting they can be. Having a GPS tell you at the last second that you should make a right and not a left or telling you that it is recalculating after your last turn is extremely distracting.

You are 100% correct if we're going by the logic that is used. I've never driven with a GPS, but have driven with someone using it and they are VERY distracting because they don't warn you until to late sometimes or like you mentioned, they reroute you out of the blue.

I think it ultimately boils down to how good a driver you are. Me personally I don't talk on my cell phone while I drive and if I have my radio on I keep the volume low. If someone can multi task while driving more power to them but if they cause an accident while distracted they should be punished accordingly.

i didn't threaten you when i said " just because I don't like putting others in peril." I was mentioning just because when i drive i don't like putting others at risk unlike most of society.
I think we need harsher laws for drivers, and make them take routine drivers tests to keep driving, it kills me the number of drivers who do not know or respect basic road rules
