Four protesters, including the spokesman of Occupy Charlotte, were charged after setting fire to two American flags early Friday near the Occupy camp in Center City, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police weren't sure earlier if the four men who set fire to two flags were associated with the Occupy Charlotte movement.

But, WBTV has learned that one of the men is the media spokesman for the Occupy group and has been the contact person listed on press releases from Occupy Charlotte.

The fires happened with in feet of the group's encampment.

Earlier reports indicated one flag was burned, but a police report says that 2 US flags were burned.

Officers said they noticed the suspects lighting something on fire directly in front of the Occupy camp along Trade Street around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Police swarmed the area, and detained the men while firefighters were called in to knock down the flames. About $30 worth of damage was caused to landscaping at the site.

It was only after the fire was out did officials figure out what was burning, the American flag.

Police said the men claimed they were burning the flag in protest. Burning the flag is not illegal, however doing it outside of a fire pit, and within ten feet from flammable tents poses a problem.

Officers arrested 20-year-old Stephen Christopher Morris of Matthews, 28-year-old Jason Bargert of Charlotte, 23-year-old Michael Alan Behrle of Matthews and 19-year-old Alex Macon Tyler of Fort Mill.

Bargert is the media spokesman for Occupy Charlotte and in earlier media reports said he had been with the group since "the beginning."

All four men were charged with being careless with fire. That charge is a misdemeanor under the city ordnance.

Police officers told WBTV the protesters gave them a verbal tongue-lashing while being detained, calling then fascists, as well as using other colorful words.

I agree, it is not illegal and it is within their right to do so. It also inidcative of just how ignorant these people are.

I have no problem with people being able to burn the flag in protest. I do have a problem with people causing an unessary fire hazzard.

I have a problem with them burning the flag in protest when they are protesting private businesses taking advantage of the American people. What was the point of burning the flag? My guess is nothing more than shock value and to stir up controversy which shows just how ignorant they are.

If the Occupy movement had a few people with an I.Q. over 70 they might actually accomplish something other than stupid pointless stunts and looking like buffoons.

Burning the flag is just dumb. I may be sympathetic to the Occupy movement, but I'm with Duane here, it just makes them come off as unintelligent. Their time would be better spent in a library analyzing their positions and why they have them rather than playing with fire.

they are unintelligent. I'm not sympathetic whatsoever to the Occupy movement, all they are doing is hurting other small business owners and workers instead of actually going out and getting a job themselves instead of complaining about why others are making such a good living in the U.S. I know of one story where a 23 year old got up to the roof of a City Hall and refused to leave, that he was up there for about a month so far. And when they talked to him he said while he's up there he'll be studying to get his GED....yes, these are the types of people leading the movement. Really you haven't graduated high school?? Well that shouldn't stop us from hiring you and giving you a 6 figure salary!! :winking0071:
