A "serpent-handling" West Virginia pastor died after his rattlesnake bit him during a church ritual, just as the man had apparently watched a snake kill his father years before.
Pentecostal pastor Mark Wolford, 44, hosted an outdoor service at the Panther Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia Sunday, which he touted on his Facebook page prior to the event.
"I am looking for a great time this Sunday," Wolford wrote May 22, according to the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/serpent-handling-pastor-profiled-earlier-in-washington-post-dies-from-rattlesnake-bite/2012/05/29/gJQAJef5zU_story.html). "It is going to be a homecoming like the old days. Good 'ole raised in the holler or mountain ridge running, Holy Ghost-filled speaking-in-tongues sign believers."
Robin Vanover, Wolford's sister, told the Washington Post that 30 minutes into the outdoor service, Wolford passed around a poisonous timber rattlesnake, which eventually bit him.
"He laid it on the ground," Vanover said in the interview, "and he sat down next to the snake, and it bit him on the thigh."
Vanover said Wolford was then transported to a family member's home in Bluefield about 80 miles away to recover. But as the situation worsened, he was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Kind of skeptical to post this in the politics and religion forum, if needed a team member can move this topic. Thanks!

the snake handler religion is one religion that baffles me way more than most. I just don't get it. I suppose anyone handling snakes like this knows there's a risk of dying from a bite.

serpent handling comes from a few verses in the NT, and even paul had an event with a snake

First of all i think this sucks, but it's also one of the dumbest things i've ever seen. First of all, why even do that when your own dad died from it? And second, it says he was transferred to somebodys house... Perhaps if he went straight to the hospital he would have lived...?

Exactly my thoughts. Why take to him to a friends house when he clearly was bitten by a poisonous snake. Some people are really stupid and do not realize the dangers that they expose themselves to

They have faith that God will protect them from the effects of the poison and do not seek medical help. If you do a look back at the history of snake handling (I did a research paper on the history of it in college) nearly all of the people who have died from doing it died because they refused medical help.

These people also ingest poison. Like literally drink acids and posions.

They base it all on one verse in the Bible.
Mark 16: 17-18 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 "they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
