On Thursday, a federal appeals court in Boston ruled that the government's ban on gay marriage, called the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), violates the Constitution and should be struck down.

If the Supreme Court hears the case and upholds this ruling, it means that the federal government would most likely have to recognize the marriages of gay couples who were wed and reside in the six states that allow same-sex unions.

The First Circuit Court found that the federal government does not have a right to interfere in states' definition of marriage, but stopped short of arguing that gay people have a constitutionally protected right to legal marriage. The First Circuit court is the first federal appeals court to strike down the law, and the case is likely to be taken up by the Supreme Court next year.

A big victory for gay marriage and equality in the U.S.

Im not mad at that at all. What two consenting adults do in the privacy and comfort of their own bedrooms is none of anyone else's business.

If there are federal laws that depend on the definition of the word "marriage," there ought to be a uniform federal definition of the term. On the other hand, the federal government has no business telling people whether they can or cannot be married. That is up to the states. It not such a cut and dried legal issue. I can see justifications for both sides of the argument.

I think it's a simple solution....

Marriage should be defined as follows: Two consenting adults have the right to a legal union regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or gender.

I think that's discriminatory against children and animals.

You win :confused0024:

It's not about that.

You made a bad argument.

The way marriage is defined now, it doesn't include children or animals and you know that.

Why would saying that gays can get married warrant a discrimination against children and animals?

Nothing is changing except the inclusion of same-sex genders of consenting ADULTS.

Basically, you're using the "Slippery slope" argument.....which is not a good argument at all.

Would that not be discriminating.....

I just don't see the big deal let them get married and do whatever, there are way bigger issues to deal with in this country and we forget that.
