Liberal Muslim columnist arrested for spray painting graffiti over anti-jihad NY subway ad


An Egyptian-born U.S. columnist was arrested Tuesday for spray painting an advertisement equating Muslim radicals with savages at a New York City subway station.

Mona Eltahawy, 45, of New York, was arrested on charges including criminal mischief and making graffiti, police said.

Eltahawy is a women's rights defender and lecturer on the role of social media in the Arab world. She calls herself a liberal Muslim who's spoken publicly against violent Islamic groups.

The incident was captured on video, which shows Eltahawy spraying pink paint on the ad while another woman tries to block her.

'This is non-violent protest, see this America' Eltahawy said as police officers were arresting her. 'I'm an Egyptian-American and I refuse hate.'

The ad states: 'In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man.' It adds, 'Support Israel. Defeat Jihad,' in between two Stars of David.

Arrested for a peaceful protest without pepper spray or tazers?

Now I've heard it all!

Seriously though, I see nothing wrong on either side. He protested, in a manner that really hurt no one just caused a mess, he was arrested for it non-violently. He made a statement, he's (thus far) paid fair price. I agree with his point, I agree with his arrest. This is how it's supposed to work.
