Today the sensational young phenom in Mark Prior began the season with a great first outing!!! Here is the box score for his game against the Mets today.

IP H R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
M. Prior 6 4 1 1 2 7 0 105-70 1.50

What do you guys think, is this kid the real deal?
I think he is and I'm happy to have him on my fantasy team.

BTW hitting he was 1 for 2 with a run. NOT BAD IMO

I don't know about him being the real deal? Check out the past 25 young pitchers who were suppose to be the real deal.

I think he has the best potential to become great but wasn't Kerry Wood suppose to be Cy Young winner by now?

Prior now has what, 16 games under his belt? Don't be putting him into the HOF yet. Also, you had to be on crack if you wasted 20 points on Prior in today's catalog on etopps!

Nah, he'd get lit up just like Roy Halladay did. The Yankees offense is unstopable. It's the pitching that will determine how far they go.

Did you know he was originally drafted by the Yankees? How sick of a rotation would that be? Clemens-Mussina-Pettitte-Wells-Prior.

He was drafted by the Yankees. That's news to me. Why wouldn't they keep him?

Not quite sure why they wouldn't keep him. He's gonna be a star for years to come.

To clear up all the Yankee and Prior talk, Prior was drafted out of high school by the Yankees in the 2nd round (43rd overall) but declined to sign with them because he wanted to go on and play college ball.

Thanks I was wondering why the Yankees would let someone go like that. Usually they hold onto promising prospects.

I think Prior might end up being better than Kerry Wood (primarily b/c of Wood's injuries).....

but Dusty Baker's got one heck of a team if the pitching holds up!

I'm more worried about Matt Clement's wildness than Prior or Wood as this point. He's gotta get more control if they want to be contenders down the stretch.

There was a nice article in the NY Times today about this topic. He's been compared to Schilling. Not the young Curt Schilling but today's because he has such good mechanics and control. Mets announcers claim he's a future power pitcher but with more control.

We'll see. The question really is how long will he last before a possible injury. If you check the DL for MLB, you'll see a majority of these players are pitchers. How screwed up is that?

For all of you that are riding high on Prior for his early limited success, let me drop one name on you guys that I'm sure you'll all remember... Rick Ankiel.

Prior has great potential... leave it at that. He had a great outing today, sure... but it's only the 3rd game of the season. Let's see how his stats are at the break...

I miss harry carray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I stopped watching as many game when he died. I use to love how he got drunk and was slurring his words by the 7th inning stretch and if the game went into extra innings you could forget about it. I haven't heard anyone try to spell people's name backwards since Harry died.

I agree with you, kingpin. And as a Mets fan, I'm impressed that you don't sound like you hold a grudge against him.

Yup Rick Ankiel has fallen off the face of the earth. That guy had so much talent and now he can't even pitch in the Majors anymore. What a shame.

Last I heard about Ankiel, they were trying to convert him to an OF because he still has a great bat.

Isn't that a guy from Milwaukee who was sent down to the minors?

If you're referring to Rick Ankiel, he was a great young pitcher who started out his career fully in 2000 with the St Louis Cardnals. At 21, he was 11-7 3.50 ERA and had 194 K's in 175 innings. He then started Game 2 of the Divional Series and didn't make it though the 2nd inning becoming the first player in 100 years to throw 5 wild pitches in one game. Then he got another start in Game 2 of the NLCS and only lasted 2 outs of the 1st inning giving up 3 walks and 2 wild pitches. In 2001, he started 3 games going 1-2 with an ERA of 7.12 before getting sent back down to the minors. As you can imagine, in 2000 he was a HUGE rookie and all of his cards were very high. Now, he cards are worth dirt and haven't heard anything about him since.
