the tour de france will be more exciting today than that game was!! no wonder americans dont like soccer....somebody gets a hang nail and they lay on the ground for 2 minutes!! ronnie lott had his freakin finger cut off so he wouldn't miss any time!! and i played soccer for many years as a kid!!

that was horrible, zidane let france down.. and ribery, henry and vierra were all taken out because they were winded and couldnt be put back on the pitch. trezeguet just barely missed that pk, but i was sure france was gonna win :(

whats horrible is, comparing football to soccer... football gives you play after play and you set it all up blah blah blah.. of course i love football, but ive played soccer since i was 5 and im 15 now as a select keeper so i have to say i would like to see a football player play in 2 45 min. half's then 2 15 min. over times and still not be dead enough to take pk's.. and they're harder then they look.

The acting in soccer has long been a pile of crap- they need to issue RED CARDS for faking... they do it in the league I coach in- believe me, it speeds up the play, makes scoring higher and generally teaches SPORTSMANSHIP! Dang, if you want to CHEAT, go back to jersey tugging- leave the acting off the field along w/ the head butts and slide tackling from behind. I think there should also be UNLIMITED substitutions and so then the guys out there on the field could go ba**s out for 10 or 15 min shifts and you'd see a few more 5-4 games. Plus, maybe have the shootout be direct kick from 30 yards w/ all players both sides on the field... back and forth until someone wins. A goal, a keeper ball, an out of bounds by the offense, or a defensive "clear" past midfield would signal end of shootout posession... Dang, I need to apply for the Board of FIFA...

want me to make a comparison?? how bout lacrosse then?? not a bunch of babies who hit the ground when their skirts get too tight!! its ridiculous...dont tell me they run around for 90 minutes staight...you and i ran around for 90 minutes, but at a world class level, it is a skill sport.

If I showed you guys a video of our Championship game which was won in the second overtime of a scoreless game 8 seconds from a shootout, you'd be as fanatic about soccer as any other game... The fields are too big at World class level... they need to make it so that when a goalie punts he has to be PRECISE or he'll outkick his offense, the defense should be forced to push up more (by shortening the field) they need to have more situations where a guy beats a double-team for a goal, defenders streaking in on a corner and hitting the net from 30 yards... I realize the game is ancient in its roots, but it reminds me of the Inca game they played all stinkin' day trying to get the ball through the sideways metal loop 20 feet up on the arena wall... We're not so into all day events that end 1-0 nowadays- and furthermore, maybe the game being quarters rather than halves would do a little something- it would make it more TV friendly, for sure... I LOVE SOCCER, but I coach it and play it WAY OUTSIDE the box... and I may be tempted to start a league that plays with a tweaked set of rules to see how it catches on- for (goodness) sake I've actually seen leagues where they never call offsides (13-14 y/o girls!) because "that would discourage some of the (not-so-athletic) kids from playing."

you're right its bs that professional players make themselves look bad by clearly diving. but lacrosse?? you pass a tiny ball and cradle it and get hit by sticks.. id like to see a lacrosse player move a ball with their feet. i wasnt talking about any other sports.. i was talking about football

its just like EVERY other sport....it is a skill...not many people can play other sports...thats why a guy like Bo, in my opinion, is one of the greatest ATHLETES ever....did you see MJ try and play baseball? of course superstar athletes cant play other professional sports, cause most have played that one sport for their ENTIRE life!!

If for no other reason i will never get into soccer because of the tie.... a tie? are you kidding me.... the biggest series of games in the entire world and half the games end with no winner? I uderstand what you all are saying about running for 90 minutes but marathoners run for several hours with no break. Is running a marathon harder than playing 48 minutes in a varsity football game.... I would think probably not. All the running is just condition that many sports dont require so they dont focuis on it. Sure a soccer player can probably outrun a lineman but you put them 1 on 1 in the trenches and tell me who wins. They are completely different sports.

My brother is a mid fielder for a team called the citidel based out of fort wayne indiana... he is probably going to go to a college to play. Does that mean he is as much of an athlete as one of my buddies who went to a NAIA college to play basketball? No way.... it is just my brother has focused on kicking a ball around with his feet and my buddy focused on basketball.... both require skill just different ones...

If I showed you guys a video of our Championship game which was won in the second overtime of a scoreless game 8 seconds from a shootout, you'd be as fanatic about soccer as any other game

the problem here is there is no way i would watch after halftime if no goals were scored...

Tension builds when a game is in SUDDEN DEATH... and DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS... now, in our Championship there were 16 saves by our goalie, and 13 by the other goalie, both of which went on to elite camps full-ride... It's funny that no one appreciates defense in any sport any more. I'd rather see a no-hitter or perfect game that a 6 HR contest... one you see maybe once in a lifetime, the other once a week. I'd rather see 10 sacks or 4 interceptions than 5 TD passes. Man, I guess I'm just OLD SCHOOL?

kinda hard when 90% of world class soccer games are 1-0 to attribute that to "good defense"....it is a game of strategy, ball control, and finesse....when i think of defense, i think of toughness...nothing tough about the game of soccer

Yea, but I do have to say, as bad as football practice can be, Wrestling practice can be 10x worse. I actually usually look forward to football practice because I have some fun, but I absolutly dread going to wrestling practice. And it doesnt help when you cant eat much cuz you gotta keep your weight down.

You know up until like the last 2 years I always thought like this about football, only really caring about the D, but since I've switched fro Guard/Linebacker to Runningback/Linebacker I am pretty even with my appreciation of both aspects of the game. And thats not badmouthing lineman at all becuz I still beilieve the the O-line is the key component to a good team.

yeah...the whole cutting weight thing is tough...always supported our team, but never had any interest in joining (didnt have a choice since our 171 pounder was a 2 year state champion, lol)

Ties are very unnecessary in the leagues where they play maybe 3 games in 15 days... if you actually play as often as 4X a week, as in the league I coach in, and in SNOW at least twice a season... PLUS the league is CoEd so TEAM is of the utmost importance... we NEED ties in that league, just to avoid having some kid die after the third game of the week... if it happened to be a girl, the season could be forfeited as well- there's a rule about 3 field players at all times being girls- you can play w/ 2 but down a player, and GOALIES are not counted as 1 of the 3... I actually coached the girl goalie in the league who set the record for most shutouts over 4 yrs, most consecutive shutouts, most shutouts in a season... she was a BASEBALL CATCHER before I got her- I made her goalie on day 1 of her first Jayvee practice

If you put a soccer player against a football player in soccer, the soccer player would win. If you put that same soccer player against that same football player in football, the football player would win. So im not sure what that added to the argument Tutall. Ties arent necessary in football, basketball, or baseball because they score enough to not have one. In some soccer games, they would play for a straight 6 or 7 hours, which could kill someone. Especially in an international game, where its as close to life and death as you can get, so neither side is going to give in.

thats partially my point though.... you can play for 6 or 7 hours and no one wins... whats the point
