View Full Version : 1948 Swell Sport thrills -- real or fake?

I could attach a picture, but that wouldn't help (nobody I've talked to has been able to give me a straight answer, even with a super hi-res scan of the cards front and back, or even looking at the cards themselves... -- but generally speaking, I'm trying to discern if what I have is a REALLY GOOD fake (I know that there are counterfeit 48 SST cards out there) or the real deal.

 Has anybody come across real 48 SSTs in superb condition? (Mine would all be PSA 7 or better). What distinguishes the reals from the fakes? Thickness? Print dots? Smell? Glossiness? Could I just send one in to PSA or SGC and if it's fake, they'll just send it back to me and tell me they can't grade it?

I've had a couple of vintage collectors (self-described) look at them, and they disagreed as to whether they might be real -- one really seemed to think they were, one was "pretty" sure they weren't.

Thanks.

Still need help!!! :new_uklia

Alternatively, could anyone throw up a really good quality scan or pic of one, front and back? (Not that this would necessarily help, but man, there's got to be someone out there who collects something other than this insert-chase-card-GU-auto's-serial-#'d-refractor-gold-etc.... crap that I see donimating most boards! :icon_evil)

This site (http://www.vintagecardtraders.org/virtual/48swell/48swell.html) has scans of all 20 cards in the set. If you go to their home page (http://www.vintagecardtraders.org/virtual/index.html), you'll see how to contact Mr. Dan Austin and maybe he can help you out with your question. Good luck!!

Andy, what an amazing site. I wonder how many of these are just out there in someone's garage collecting dust...some little old lady who's husband has passed that has no idea what she has...wow

Yeah, they look just like mine... Maybe I'll just go bite the bullet and head off to a big show that attracts a lot of vintage dealers and just buy a card and take it home and compare :icon_eek:

Or you might want to take the card to the show and ask those vintage dealers about your card. If you do, make sure you ask several dealers--if it is authentic, perhaps a dealer or two will make sweet offers for it.
