I Purchased a case of Topps Sterling and will post a box a day. I been excited about this product from the first day I heard about it, I even purchased a Topps Sterling booklet to hold me over till they finally come out. I picked up a Topps Triple case from http://www.shortporch.com/ and was very happy with the results, mojo was a Pujols Bonds Arod triple auto relic. I Figured I had to use them again for the Topps Sterling, Man Am I glad. I preordered this at $2500 a case. Jeff Tucker at Short Porch Thank You.

Thanks, Mike

That was last nite and then this was todays pulls.

Had to expect a big let down after box one. But I'm pleased to get a Cal Ripken Box a special number card of Ripken 4 piece card 01/10 and the Mystery pack found a Hall of Fame cut autograph of Ray Dandridge. He was before my time so here's some interesting info on Hooks.

Thanks, Mike

Ray Dandridge
Nickname(s): Hooks
Born: 1913

3B-2B-SS Negro Leagues 1933-49 Detroit Stars, Newark Dodgers, Newark Eagles, New York Cubans

* Hall Of Fame in 1987

Ray Dandridge was a masterful third baseman, a stylist who could make all the plays. He was smooth and relaxed, with soft hands, a strong arm, and the versatility to excel at any infield position. "People would pay their way in to the game just to see him field," claimed Monte Irvin. Roy Campanella said, "I never saw anyone better as a fielder." Hoyt Wilhelm, who played against Dandridge in Cuba and with him in Minneapolis (American Association), asserted, "No matter how the ball was hit, he always made the throw so that he just did get the man at first." Others observed that a train could go through Dandridge's bowlegs, but that a baseball never did.

Dandridge started his pro career with the 1933 Detroit Stars and moved to the Negro National League's Newark Eagles, for whom he starred throughout the remainder of the 1930s. A spray hitter with good bat control, he seldom struck out, and skillfully executed the hit-and-run. In 1935, he hit .368. Looking for more money in 1939, he opted to play in Latin America. He went to Mexico in 1940, and spent most of the decade there. When he came back for a year in Newark in 1944, he batted .370, leading the NNL in hits, runs, and total bases. In 1945 he set a Mexican League record for hitting safely in the most consecutive games and managed his team to a pennant. In nine Mexican League seasons, he compiled a .343 average. Following the 1948 season, he returned to the States as player-manager of the New York Cubans.

During his time in the NNL, Dandridge registered a lifetime .355 average, and played in three East-West all-star games, hitting .545. He played winter ball in Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Cuba; in 11 seasons of Cuban Winter League action, he batted .282.

Soon after Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Bill Veeck contacted Dandridge about playing with the Cleveland Indians, but Dandridge refused to leave Mexico without a bonus. Later, in 1949, at age thirty-five, he was signed by the New York Giants and assigned to their Triple-A farm club at Minneapolis. He batted .363 his first year there, and won the league's MVP award in 1950, when he led Minneapolis to the league championship. Despite his achievements, the Giants would not promote him to the parent club.

While at Minneapolis, Dandridge provided advice and assistance to a young Willie Mays, who never forgot the help or the man. Returning to Cooperstown for Dandridge's induction into the Hall of Fame (he was elected by the Committee on Baseball Veterans in 1987), Mays stated, "Ray Dandridge helped me tremendously when I came through Minneapolis. Sometimes you just can't overlook those things. Ray was a part of me when I was coming along."

» July 26, 1987: Catfish Hunter, Billy Williams, and Ray Dandridge are inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

nt4275, Thanks.

Another pleasant box and I know we have a Special Brett fan that gets first crack at these out of the George Brett box. Very happy to report we pulled another auto a Sweet 5 piece George Brett. But was a little disappointed with the surprise pack, it was the same suede #95 Ripken 02/50, we pulled yesterday.

Thanks, Mike

MikefromChester
11-20-2006, 04:43 PM
sense6, Thanks, No, the Mantle is why I purchased a case, so I'd besured of getting at least a Mantle 3 Piece, the auto on was really a bonuse, I never dreamed I'd hit one of his cuts.

Box 5
Have to say at the halfway mark this nolan ryan box is the worst so far. No auto in box five, but a very nice 4 piece Ryan, and all appears to be the same color. And guess what the Surprise pack is, yeap you right another Ripken, but at least this one is a differant card #85.

Thanks, Mike

mrbaseball969, Thanks.

Stl_Cardinals_Fan, Thanks, Yes get me some offers or lists. interested in yanks, braves and special cards.

Box 9:
Another Yankee for the collection, we have a Yogi Berra box. No autos today, but did get a sticker card. I check out the back of the cards when I first open to see if it has a Topps auto sticker on it. This one has a triangle sticker which states a 1/1. Was very happy to pull a 1/1 five piece Yogi card with Jersey, uniform and glove on it. Mystery card same #95 Ripken but this one works in my collection being the first 01/50. One more to break,

Thanks,
Mike

linksmaker, Congratulation on a Ripken WOW 6 piece Auto, very nice.

Box 10:
We have a Mike Schmidt Box. Mystery pack the same #95 Ripken. But very happy with the Schmidt Auto 3 pieces card. Does anyone have any guess as to what the piece is under the number 1. it has some green on it?

This was a bunch of fun to open. From start to finish 06 Topps Sterling has delivered. Best pull easily the Mantle cut auto 3 relic. The worst I'll go with Ryan 4 pieces only cause they all appear to be the same color. My only complaint with this product is the mystery packs yielding the same player in seven of the packs and six of them being the same card. Overall is it the product of the year? It very well could be.

Thanks, Mike

Please check my site for the others listed then. I am also interested in the hits from the most recent boxes.

The green on the Schmidt appears to be writing. Hence part of an autograph that was on the memorabilia used to make the card.

Mike... I'd be willing to bet that the green writing on that bat piece is part of the #2 in his jersey number #20 or part of an autograph or writing from the bat that Topps chopped up to make the card. They have used autographed GU bats before, so it's pretty rare that you have a bat chip with writing on it. However, it's more likely that it's from some marking to designate that the bat was for Schmidt to use, like his Jersey number or something like that.

Thanks for sharing the break with us...
