GREEN BAY, Wis. (April 23, 2003) -- The Green Bay Packers claimed Eric Crouch off waivers from the St. Louis Rams, and said they will give him a shot at quarterback.

Crouch won the 2001 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback at Nebraska, but sat out last season after the Rams drafted him in the third round and tried to convert him into a wide receiver.

Crouch forfeited his signing bonus after training camp last year, saying he'd rather retire if he couldn't be a quarterback in the NFL.

He remains on the reserve/retired list.

Crouch is one of three players in NCAA Division 1 history to rush for more than 3,000 yards and throw for more than 4,000 yards in his career.

If he makes the roster, Crouch would be the sixth Heisman Trophy winner to play for the Packers, joining Bruce Smith (1941), Paul Hornung (1956), Ty Detmer (1990), Desmond Howard (1991) and Danny Wuerffel (1996).

Crouch may or may not have a future in the NFL as a WR, but his QB days are history.

Look, this dude couldn't and/or didn't pass the ball, despite Nebraska being down 20+ points to Miami in the Championship game.

Everyone knew Nebraska needed to pass the ball in order to win. And he still didn't pass it.

I cannot believe he won the Heisman over Dorsey that year.

Well I don't think he will do anything.

But does everyone remember who the Packers had in camp during the 1993 season.

They had Favre, Brunell, Detmer, and Warner.

Looks like they are really reaching for a backup to Favre now.

Crouch is a has been. He's a great player, but not ready for the NFL and I don't think he should have won the Heisman. Crouch will be a bench warmer at best, and his days in football are numbered.

Tim, agreed!!

What boggles my mind is this: how can a school so incredibly good (Nebraska) produce QBs that aren't even good enough to be 2nd-string QBs?

During Crouch's 4 years at Neb, he didn't improve one single bit as a QB.

How could a college program do that to their athletes? Don't they have an obligation to produce guys who have a chance to compete for NFL.

It's one thing for a college like Univ. of Hawaii to solely run a passing attack with no running back....but at Nebraska, QBs, WRs, and pass-catching tight ends are useless. Just terrible.

As a QB, WR, who the hell wants to there to play if you've got aspirations for the NFL

Crouch has been on waivers forever so it's really no big deal that someone picked him up to give him a shot. I knew someone that was in St Louis camp and he was pissed because the Rams were so much on this guys balls. The guy I know ended up getting cut over Crouch and then Crouch said he didn't want to play anymore. At least the dude I know has been invited to Carolina's training camp so hopefully he'll make the team there!

I couldn't agree more, either. Crouch was a decent QB, and I'd hesitate to call him "good"! It's one thing for a smaller college or a program like the Air Force academy that never passes, but Nebraska has been known to produce so many Eric Crouchs. It's sad.

Iggy, what's the guy's name?

Eugene Baker... in limited action with ATL (where he got drafted) he did pretty well.

I disagree with your opinion, granted I am a Husker fan but I do call out the bull**** that die hard fans whine about...Passing has been the biggest controversy with Husker Football since as far back as I can remember, but according to the coaches the rushing philosophy works for them, had we been beating Miami no one would of said a word about passing...Do I agree that we should only have a one sided rushing offense, no...But I don't know that we nescessarily needed to pass the ball either, some offenses can, our offense has a much better chance of breaking a big run than we do at throwing the long ball...And for your final point about Dorsey, Crouch IMO is by far, a much better all around college athlete than Dorsey, he isn't pro material at QB in my opinion, but then the Heisman is given to the best college athlete not the best pro prospect........

Tim the program here in Lincoln has been that way for years, and the reason the program has produced so many Eric Crouch's is because that is what the offense calls for and it has worked for 40+ years...QB's know what there getting into when they come to Lincoln, it's no real secret!!!

I myself think the option is a complete joke and that is why I will never look at Nebraska as a legit team.

well all I have to say is you never know, remember what pick was randy moss? you just never really know, I respect the guy he didn't practice all his life at the QB position to be a WR, and if he has any work ethic at all he will and adapt if he wants to play. Worse case is that he takes off with the ball and nobody can catch him.

I agree with gio, Crouch may be a good fit for the Packers in the long run.

Iggy your entitled to your opinion, but I only have one thing to say, 33 yrs worth of winning 9 or more games per season, and a NCAA record for consecutive bowl appearances and 5 national championships in the last 30 years, but you don't consider them a legit team??????????????????????????????????????????????

Winning isn't everything... it's how you play the game, and the option is the worst offense ever IMO. Sure, they did use it in the early 1900's, but that's only because they didn't really know or understand how to throw a football. ANy team can line up with 3 RB's in the backfield and run the option but most people have enough class not to. ND is a perfect example for me... when they ran the option 2 years ago, everyone hated it and you can't say there isn't a bigger following than ND fans. To me, it's just cheap and that isn't football and I will not support it.

I totally agree about the option being a total joke.

Sure, it may be a good offense to run for the likes of Army (how many college players become NFL stars from Army?), but the good college programs have a duty to help prepare their athletes to compete for a spot on the NFL.

No one runs the option in the NFL (except for a play here and there), b/c all it takes is Ray Lewis smashing through the QB, oblivious of whether or not the QB is running the ball or tossing it to the RB.

A few vicious, direct hits on several option plays and that QB is out for the season.

Why anyone would want to play QB, WR, or pass-catching TE at Nebraska boggles my mind, b/c you almost never have a chance to hone your skills in the passing attack needed for the NFL.

Last good receiving RB I recall was Roger Craig, who played for the Niners.

Dude... I'm going to have a heart attack, pod and I actually agree on something! I had more respect when ND sucked and wouldn't go to the option then I did when they did run the option for a little and were good.

The reason players choose to play at those positions is because they want to play for the top college program!!!This will be the last post here on this thread because we all have our opinions, but I would like to know the percentage of players that are drafted to the NFL to the ones who are not, so no I don't think that a college program is obligated to undermine there chance at winning due to a players NFL hopes and dreams, because I'm sure a large number of them never make it there...And with that I agree to disagree LOL.........

I feel what ever offence works the best for your team is the one you should go with! I'm not a big fan of the Huskers but they do have a great football program & Team.

is college really suppose to get guys in the NFL, or to teach teamwork and graduate students, as far as ND goes I am a fan of the option it provide a lot o excitement if ran correctly, neb, air force and ND back in the day with jerome bettis remember when they ran it with him, wow.

now as far as the nfl goes those players know that if they are QB at neb, and they pick that school, it is not like neb, hides the fact, they will run the option so those QB's know what they are getting into.

Now I know nothing about Nebraska and I know nothing about Crouch but I do know that Brett Favre is a damn good QB. If the packers are setting Crouch up as QB for future use then Crouch has no one better then Favre to work behind. Given the time and desire I could see Crouch going a long way. I might be wrong but only time can tell. :)

That's not the point I'm trying to make... in my opinion, Nebraska (and anyone that runs the option) are trying to bunk the system and if I had my way, the option would be made illegal... but I'm not quite sure how you would do that. Option is not exciting to me at all and the same with a lot of people I have talked to about this... but in the same respect a lot of people like the option. I know if Pittsburgh ever tries to run a fulltime option, that'll be the last of me following them!
