View Full Version : Who will rule the MLB in 4-5 years? Victory Sports 04-24-2003, 10:51 AM i think the tigers will! not just bein a tigers fan, but there is so much young talent. tampa bay and the royals will definentally be good to. what do u guys think? stkmtimo 04-24-2003, 11:09 AM No way, sorry. Yankees will continue to dominate and they'll win the next three World Series will the amazing young talent in Soriano, Jeter, Matsui, etc. Tim plunge 04-24-2003, 11:15 AM If Detroit can get some good trades, work up their farm system and manage them properly, they've got more than a snowball's chance in ... Victory Sports 04-24-2003, 11:17 AM I really hope Iltich sells the tigers, because then someone who actually does somethin for them comes along, iltich puts all his money into the damn red wings :( podstock 04-24-2003, 01:09 PM Have to say the Yankees. They've got the money to lure top pitching and hitting. If you're Matt Morris, do you accept $10M/season to play for the Cardinals or $30M/season to play for the Yankees? If you're Miguel Tejada, do you accept $100M multi-year contract from Oakland, or a $300M contract from NY? A salary cap must be utilized in baseball, much like basketball, where you pay a fine, dollar for dollar, when you go above the salary cap. That way, if salary cap is $100M for the team, and Yankees spend $200M, then Steinbrenner should pay another $100M for being over that cap. Otherwise, what the Yankees are doing is stealing the World Series. Teams like Devil Rays have a team salary of less that what A. Rod makes this year. it's no different than if you go to a rich man's home, rob him of millions, and then say you're a millionaire. Yankees suck, b/c they buy their way to success. No team should ever have the ability to pay $200M team salary while the average team pays $75M. That's not competition. pwaldo 04-25-2003, 11:41 AM ^^^^^ LMAO I know there are so people who like to hate on the Yankees but come on that post was crazy. The Yankees aren't going to sign Morris or Tejeda. You make it sound like they sign 100 players and other teams have like 8 guys. You do know that some players DO NOT always sign for money. Yes it may come as a shock that back in the fall of 1993 Maddux turned down millions of dollars more from the Yankees to sign with the Braves. Back then the Yankees offered tons of players to come sign with them and NOBODY wanted to play for them. So by making trades and using their farm system they got better without signing people. Then after they won the WS in 1996, free agents WANTED to play for the Yankees. And just for the record baseball does have a "salary cap". The Yankees and Mets went over it and both teams had to pay a fine. Its just that baseball doesn't have a minimum salary. I loved the Royals all these years saying "we can't compete with the Yankees blah blah blah, we will never be able to win without money." Well the Twins did, the A's did, and now the Royals are doing very well this year. Money doesn't equal championships people. If that were the case then the Mets, Dodgers, and Red Sox would have won a title recently. But money isn't everything. That's why the Mets, Dodgers and Red Sox will continue to suck. But to answer you question. Its tough to say. Teams go through winning and losing cycles so a bad team now could be good in the future or a good team now could be back in the future. Victory Sports 04-25-2003, 11:54 AM i understand what u r saying. if only illtich would sell the damn tigers, then we would have a guy putting money into them, not just the red wings. They could have all the young talent they want... but as soon as one of them gets good, they are out of town. Detroit can't pay a player like other big city clubs can. And what was up with Detriot letting Randall Simon go? He has an All-Star year and then they won't even pay the guy a million dollars? COME ON! Detriot first needs to remove their heads from their asses before they even want to think about being a competitive team, let alone a dominant one. pwaldo 04-25-2003, 12:18 PM Originally posted by IggyWH They could have all the young talent they want... but as soon as one of them gets good, they are out of town. COME ON! Detriot first needs to remove their heads from their asses before they even want to think about being a competitive team, let alone a dominant one. The thing about not paying good players is not an issue for the Tigers. They should be able to afford them. They are paying Bobby Higginson over $11 million dollars this year. This guy is batting around .200 with 1 HR and a handful of RBIs. Teams like the Tigers can AFFORD good players but in the end they decide to sign the wrong players instead. They sign overvalued high priced veterns that had a career year and that never do anything. When instead they should be signing good talented young players before they can leave. podstock 04-25-2003, 12:40 PM I definitely agree about that assessment for Detroit. It's a sports town, and should have enough of a fan attraction to be able to be in the upper 1/3 of paid salary for the team. Like waldo said though... it's a classic example of not spending the money the have right. Then since they are losers, they say hey, why spend all this money. Still think letting Simon go was one of Detroits dumbest moves. Victory Sports 04-25-2003, 02:01 PM yes, we trades imon for prospects, mohler for prospects, and we let jose lima go. wtf? lima was a 20 game winner with houston, detroit just never gave him a chance. y do the tigers always trade decent players for prospects? it just pisses me off pwaldo 04-25-2003, 02:23 PM Well I think you already answered your own question about the Tigers. The owner spends the money on the Red Wings because they are popular and he just lets the Tigers wallow around in the basement. Then when they have good players they let them go or trade them for more prospects. It only works with prospects if you actually keep some of them. The Tigers DO have some very good players. What they need to do is weed out the bad players and decide to keep the good ones. john1170 04-29-2003, 04:20 PM Originally posted by L0stAndF0und yes, we trades imon for prospects, mohler for prospects, and we let jose lima go. wtf? lima was a 20 game winner with houston, detroit just never gave him a chance. y do the tigers always trade decent players for prospects? it just pisses me off Jose Lima was a head case who couldn't pitch his way out of a paper bag. Detroit was fortunate they let him go. He had one good year. That doesn't make a career. The Tigers are just in a state of dissaray. They have nothing to look forward to. There is not one guy in their line up that is intimidating, not a one. There prospects are light hitting infielders and one or 2 decent pitchers. They have a longgggggg way to go before they can be respected again. pwaldo 04-29-2003, 07:00 PM One thing I will give credit to the Tigers is that they actually TRIED to sign stars and free agents. They gave tons of money to Juan Gonzalez and he decided to play for less money in Texas. The problem with this team is that they have a "pitchers park" and it will prevent all the "awesome sluggers" from signing with them. What they need to do is build a team around pitching and defense. gioperation 04-29-2003, 07:07 PM right they had to learn how to build a team around the trpe of ballpark they have like st louis used to do back in the 80's they knew they had speed and turf so they built a team with a lot of speed and ran team to death. |
