I didn't see anything about this anywhere on the boards so I'll post it.
It just amazes me that even with his age he was STILL one of the best point guards in the league.
He not only holds the all time assist record but also the steals record.
Its going to be weird watching an NBA season and not seeing MJ or hearing Stockton to Malone.
BGray 05-03-2003, 12:24 PM What a great player! It's good to see he didn't try to extend his career too long like other guys have.
BGray
stkmtimo 05-03-2003, 01:10 PM He doesn't go out with a "bang", and he was a class act. What more can you ask for in a retiring athlete?
Tim
IggyWH 05-03-2003, 02:57 PM He's a definite 1st ballot HOFer! Here's to you and never seeing your little tight shorts again :booze:
radioheadfloyd 05-03-2003, 03:00 PM Big ups to Gonzaga. :hop:
podstock 05-03-2003, 04:47 PM We just talked about whether or not Jim Rice deserves to be in the Hall because Rice had comparable stats, but didn't have anything that shouted out "hall of fame!!"
Well, Stockton is DEFINITELY a Hall-of-Famer.
#1 in assists, 5000 more than the next person, teammate Mark Jackson
#1 in steals, 700 than Michael Jordan
Plus, in 19 years of play, he played in all 82 games in 17 of those years!!!!
Plus, he was a friendly, nice quiet fellow off the courts.
1st ballot Hall of Fame in 5 years from now.
RickNashcollector 05-05-2003, 11:44 PM my question is why not Malone, oh thats right he is so selfish he wants the all time scoring record
podstock 05-06-2003, 02:55 AM There's nothing wrong with Malone hanging on to try to get that record. He paid his dues, playing 18-19 years, almost all of them the full season.
If Grant Hill can sit on his fat Duke *** and collect $100M contract, then Malone deserves to hang on until he decides to quit.
j.e.lew 05-06-2003, 04:48 AM Just remember, Ricky Henderson wanted to play this year!, Why? He has nothing to prove, except to remain the biggest jackass in baseball.
Congrads to a great career, The NBA will definetly miss one of the classiest players in history.

yep rickey was reported that he is playing in some independent league, I think the dude just likes to play baseball, we just build a new stadium in my hometown, I wish he would have played for us, and yeah even though he is an A$$, I still would have enjoyed watching him play.
RickNashcollector 05-07-2003, 10:15 PM there is something wrong with Malone staying, his time is up just like Jordan's has been for 2 years, they won't get out of the spotlight for the younger stars, they won;t to be selfish and get all the attention because they are still playing when they are 39 and 40, Give it up and let Amare take his spotlight
Good for Stockton to give his light up for Nash, Bibby, Kidd and the rest
plunge 05-08-2003, 10:08 PM Check out the photo montage tribute to Stockton in this week's Sports Illustrated. 4 pages of Stockton full court!
podstock 05-09-2003, 12:23 AM Rickey Henderson, unlike Malone and/or Stockton, was and is a jackass.
Remember when he broke Lou Brock's stolen bases record, and proclaimed "...today, I am the greatest.."??
lol
But, you have to give the man his props.
75+ homers leading off the games.
and god knows how many stolen bases he has. That's one record not likely to be broken for a long long time.
Players get stronger and wiser as they grow older, hence they're able to hit more homers (Bonds, Sosa)....but the speed dies with age.
No player is ever faster as a 35-y/o than he was as a 25-y/o.
So, it's much easier to break home run records than it is to break Henderson's records.

I don't think thats the case.
If Malone wants to play he CAN STILL HELP many teams in the league.
That I don't have a problem with. What I do have a problem with is him going to the Lakers or something just so he can win a ring. To me even if he does win a ring like that is shouldn't count. When you just go for a ride with a team just to win a title then you are missing the whole point.
Its like when Canseco won a ring with the Yankees a few years back. He had like 2 at bats in the whole playoffs. Did he win a ring? Yes, but is that something to be proud of? No.
But that is just the way I see it.

That record will never be broken. Teams play a different kind of game today. It's more power oriented. Get a couple guys on base and jack one out. The top base stealers in today's game (Ichiro,Pierre etc..) won't play long enough at that level to touch Rickey's record.

Yeah, Rickey doesn't play too far from me. He plays for the Newark Bears in Newark, NJ. He's probably stealing bases on them like crazy, even given his old age.

He's on a team with former Astro and Tiger Jose Lima. Bill Madlock is the manager and Billy Ashley is one of the coaches. Pretty crazy. He should still be on a Major League roster.
stkmtimo 05-09-2003, 01:26 PM You're right, pretty cool team. Also, Matt Wagner former Seattle Mariners pitcher and top prospect is on the Newark Bears, as is Henderson and Lima. www.NewarkBears.com, check it out.
