you know it is bad for them, they signed Steve Avery and he is starting for them in a couple of days... I might see if I can get on their team, I used to pitch when I was in Senior League and I pitched one HS baseball game.

I kinda thought they needed hitters not pitchers. They had that guy pitch a no hitter into the 8th or something and lose.

Depending on what the financial figures were, that's not a bad pickup at all

Left-handers are a valued commodity.

Just look at 50-y/o Jesse Orosco.

ok ok..lolol, Jesse's not yet 50, but he's close.

As for the Tigers, they have nothing to lose, since I doubt they paid Avery a ton of money.

But, if Avery can pitch well, the Tigers scored a major coup!

Well I don't see it being that good of a pickup for the Tigers.

They aren't going anywhere this season so why not try out younger talent which will help them in the future.

Yeah it won't cost them that much but what does it do to help them for next season.

Well, the thing is, Avery was not signed. He has been in AAA the whole year because he impressed the Tigers during spring training. I feel there is nothing wrong with it because this guy used to be a stud. Maybe he can show some of his former talent, maybe all he needed was another shot.

Wow, Steve Avery. That's a name from the "past". The good old Braves days. Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz...and Avery!

I am going outside to start warming up, got to bring out the ol' leather, hell I can even play shortstop if they need me, too on the days I don't pitch.

yep, its weird they have an awesome triple a team, and a sucky ml team. i just found out former twins catcher aj hinch is in their triple a system. i think they should bring him up.

Hell, next you'll be hearing about Detroit giving Jim Abbott a workout... and hell, why not give Nolan Ryan a call while you're at it, I bet he can still pitch 80 MPH at 50.

The guy could win 30 games this season and I doubt his rookie card would top 50 cents.

I'd have to agree with Pwaldo.

After all, Avery's old and downhill; even with one spectacular career year, he still won't put up enough numbers to rank him with the greatest pitchers of the game.

Pitchers are the toughest to collect, b/c one arm injury, and it's over.

Look at:

Bobby Thigpen (whatever happened to him?)
John Wetteland
Rick Ankiel (struggling to get control of his pitches; he's only like 22-y/o)
lots more pitchers that I can't even think of now.

Very rarely do you get a Roger Clemens or Greg Maddux

I will agree that Avery will not be one of the greatest pitchers in the game and I am sure that his cards won't sell worth a damn but I will have to say that he was a good picture at one time and it is worth a shot to see what he may now have. Yes they could have picked up a younger pitcher but the price may have been worth while with Avery. Who know what may happen except for time. :)

Mookie...agree. And besides, left handed pitchers are a valued commodity.

If you're left handed, you're gonna be hanging around to collect your checks for years to come.

Just look at Jesse Orosco

I agree too pod, that is why I am training my daughter to throw left handed, she will be 3 y/o and I figure by the time she is in her 20's there will be a woman in MLB, why not her.

perfect postition on a baseball field left handed middle relief pitcher. You may pitch to 5-7 hitter a week.

GIoperation..Jesse Orosco is in his 40s, and for many years now, is used solely to get left handed hitters out. That's why he's still pitching, b/c he's very good at doing just that.

And sure, I could see a female playing in MLB. But she better have good stuff.

If you can't get batters out, you're headed back to the minors, male or female.

Ask Rick Ankiel, who's got major league talent at 22-y/o. But Cardinals couldn't keep him in majors b/c he basically walks everyone, lolol

Yeah I know, Steve Avery actually had a good game tonite.

his line tonite
Detroit
IP H R ER BB K HR Season ERA

S. Sparks 1.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 3.43

can't get better than that, right? He did well

we'll see how he does as the season progresses.

one game doesn't make/break a player
