I wrote this for extra credit in my english class last year.
It was a hot and sunny day in Hickory, North Carolina. It was really early in the afternoon. Brialee, a seventeen year old girl, sat on her couch in the living room waiting on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race to start. Brialee’s friends wanted her to go out to enjoy the weather but Brialee refused. She was a huge NASCAR fan and never missed a race. Her favorite drivers are Elliott Sadler and Denny Hamlin. As Brialee watched the race start, she cheered for her favorite drivers. So far the race is going good she thought. After the first half, Elliott Sadler was in the top ten. Slowly, he made it to the front to lead the race. With five laps left, everything became tense. Battling for fifth place, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon wrecked each other. The caution flag came out but all of the drivers stayed out on the track. They couldn’t risk losing their position. As the cars were coming around for the re-start, Brialee jumped up off the couch. She started screaming, “Go Elliott! Go!” There was three laps left and again, the caution flag came out for debris on the track. They re-started with a green white checkered flag. At this point, Brialee was right in the front of the television. Elliott went on to win his seventh Nextel Cup Series career win. Brialee jumped with excitement.
Chloe, Brialee’s twin sister, got home from work about six o’clock that evening. “Anything exciting happen today while I was at work?” Chloe asked Brialee. “Oh wow! You are not going to believe this! Elliott Sadler won the race!” Brialee exclaimed. Chloe did not seem to really care. Her favorite drivers are Brian Vickers and J.J. Yeley. They did not do very well in the race.
The sisters decided that they do not spend enough time together anymore. One or the other was always working. They decided to go out to dinner. They had not been able to hang out in about a week so they thought it would be really nice. They went to a new restaurant they had been wanting to try. It was called Kit’s Grill. As they were looking at the menu, Chloe said, “I would love to go to a race soon. Wouldn’t that be a lot of fun?” “Yes! We need to go next week. They’re racing in Charlotte and we should” “The tickets are more than likely sold out,” interrupted Chloe in a disappointed voice. Brialee agreed. There was no way they would be able to go.
The girls’ salads came and soon after, their meals came. They both ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and french fries. There was a silence as the two ate their food. “Mmm this sandwich is really good,” said Brialee. “It is. I’m glad we came here. We should definitely come again!” replied Chloe. The girls continued to eat their meals.
As Chloe was driving home, Brialee turned on the radio. Chloe and Brialee both loved country music. Their favorite singer, Kenny Chesney, came on singing his new hit single. Chloe turned the radio up and both girls started singing, “Cause I’m living in fast forward, a hillbilly rock star out of control. I’m living in fast forward, now I need to rewind real slow.” Right after the song was over, there was a special edition of Total NASCAR Trivia. A question about NASCAR is asked and the first person the call in with the correct answer, wins a prize. Brialee had tried several times to win, but never seemed to be fast enough. She quickly got her cell phone out and dialed the number to the radio station. “And the question is,” said the radio DJ, “Who are the top four Rookie of the Year contenders?” Before the DJ was even done asking the question, Brialee was calling. “Hey and thanks for calling! You are our first caller. What is your answer?” said the DJ. Brialee screamed, “Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Reed Sorenson, and J.J. Yeley!” “Correct! What’s your name?” “Brialee Brooks,” she said. “Well Brialee, you have just won a fully paid weekend in Charlotte! You get two tickets for Friday to the Nextel Cup Series qualifying, two tickets for the Busch Series qualifying and Busch Series race on Saturday, and two tickets for the Nextel Cup Series race on Sunday! On top of all of that, you get two pit passes for all three days!” Brialee dropped the phone and just stared out of the car window. Chloe hit her and she picked the phone back up. “Sorry,” she said. “That’s alright,” said the DJ, “you can come pick up your tickets tomorrow afternoon.” “Thank you very much!” Brialee said and hung up. Chloe started freaking out. “I cannot believe we actually won tickets to the races in Charlotte! We were just talking about it! I can’t wait. This is going the be the most exciting weekend of my life!”
They got home and ran into their house. Their parents, Portland and Mike, asked “What’s all of the excitement about?” “You are not going to believe this!” shouted Brialee. “Yeah,” said Chloe, “Brialee is great! This is so exciting!” “Wait, what are you all talking about?” said Mike. “That’s what I would like to know,” Portland said. “Well, on our way home, we were listening to the radio. There was a special edition of Total NASCAR Trivia on. I have tried to win so many times, but it never happens. I thought I would try, just to be trying. I dialed the phone number and was ready. The question was so easy! I called before the question was finished being asked! I was the first caller, and I got the right answer! I won two tickets for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! We also get pit passes! Wow! Can you believe it?” Brialee was out of breath. Mike and Portland just stared at each other. They thought the girls were just trying to play a joke on them. But after seeing the faces Chloe and Brialee had, they soon realized it was real. “Wow!” exclaimed Portland. “You gonna take me with you?” Mike said. “Sorry but now. She’s taking me!” said Chloe. “I know, I was just joking.”
That night the girls couldn’t get to sleep. All they could think about was the up coming weekend. Nothing this exciting had ever happened to them. The next morning they got up to go to work. They both worked at the local pool, but rarely got to work together. This was one of the days they got to. They were pretty happy about it. They went to work and told everyone the good news. A couple of people seemed jealous, but they did not care. They had a hard time concentrating on their work. They forgot about some hotdogs cooking and burnt them. Each day kept going by slower and slower.
On Wednesday morning, Brialee started to think about what she would pack to take with her. Of course, she would have to take her Elliott Sadler and Denny Hamlin t-shirts. Even though she would only be gone for a weekend, she decided she had better take enough clothes for about a week and a half. She took a few of her Elliott Sadler and Denny Hamlin cards and postcards. Maybe she would happen to run in to them and she could get their autographs. She was not sure if they would have a permanent marker with them, so she thought she would take on just in case. She definitely would have to a camera with extra batteries. There is no way she could go without it! Every chance she got, she thought she would take pictures. Hopefully, she would be able to get pictures of several of the drivers.
Chloe got a late start on her packing. It was already Thursday night. She had no idea what to take with her. She packed her Brian Vickers and J.J. Yeley t-shirts of course. But had a hard time on decided what other clothes to take. Like Brialee, she took cards and postcards to get autographed. She was up until about one in the morning packing. Brialee went to bed about ten o’clock and was asleep by eleven. The alarm clock went off about seven in the morning. Brialee got up and tried to wake Chloe up. She obviously stayed up too late because she would not wake up. Eventually, she woke up but would not get out of bed. Brialee went to the kitchen. She got a cup full of cold water. She went back upstairs and threw it in Chloe’s face. That got her up for sure. Both girls quickly got ready. Portland made them a huge breakfast. They had eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, and toast. After they got through eating, the family just sat at the table talking. Brialee and Chloe knew their parents would have a long talk with them, but they did not know when. Then it came. Mike and Portland talked to them for what seemed like five hours. It was actually only about twenty minutes.
About nine o’clock, the girls left for Charlotte. From their home in Hickory to Charlotte, it is about a two hour drive. The whole way there, the girls could not think or talk about anything else but the race. They were discussing how they would react if they saw a driver walk past them, especially one of their favorites.
About fifteen after eleven, they arrived in Charlotte. It took about ten minutes to find their hotel. While Brialee was checking them in, Chloe got their bags out of the trunk of the car. She walked into the hotel and gave Brialee her bags. Brialee led Chloe to their room. They walked in and could not believe what they saw. Standing in the middle of the floor, was a life size cardboard cut out of Elliott Sadler, a t-shirt and a stack of Elliott’s cards and a stack of Brian Vickers cards and a t-shirt. They got really excited and dropped their bags in the middle of the floor. There was a note taped to the cardboard. Elliott Sadler wrote, “I hope you enjoy your stay here! I hope you like these little gifts. When I heard you were my biggest fan, I had to send them over! Maybe I’ll see you this weekend.” Brian Vickers had written a similar note to Chloe. They got their stuff settled and headed over to the track. When they got there, they could not believe their eyes! The track was even bigger than they had imagined. People were everywhere.
The qualifying for the Nextel Cup Series was going to be starting in about forty minutes at one o’clock. Brialee and Chloe hung out by the drivers’ garages, hoping to see a driver or two. Just as they were about to give up on that idea, Kasey Kahne walked by. Chloe took a picture. Kasey turned around really fast as if he were angry. He said, “Hey, um what are you doing?” Chloe got nervous and shy but managed to say, “Uhh.. I am.. I mean, We are sorry. We, um, are excited! It is our first race. Kasey said “It is alright, girls. I was just joking. How about an autograph?” “Oh! That would be great! Thanks!” Brialee said. Kasey went to his garage and got a couple of postcards. He signed one for each of them with their names on it. “Thank you!” the girls said at the same time. “No problem. See you later!” Kasey said as he walked away.
The cars started to line up in the order they were going to qualify in. As each driver went to qualify, Chloe took a picture. Brian Vickers did not do very well. Finally, though it was Elliott Sadler’s turn to qualify. Brialee started to cheer as loud as she could. It must have worked, because he won the pole. So far, he had gotten the fastest lap. There was only four drivers left to qualify after him. None of them could beat Elliott.
After the girls left the track, they went to get something to eat. While eating, Elliott Sadler and some guys on his team walked in. Brialee wanted to go tell him that he did an excellent job that day and to get an autograph and a picture. She was too shy to do so though. Chloe eventually talked her into going over there. Brialee got up, but could not move. Chloe had to give her a little push. Brialee slowly walked over to Elliott’s table. “Hello. I’m Brialee and I am your biggest fan. You did amazing in qualifying today!” “Thank you,” said Elliott, “Hey, aren’t you the girl who won the radio contest?” “Yes! Thank you so much for the stuff you sent to my hotel room!” “You are welcome!” he said. “Can I get your autograph and maybe a picture?” Brialee asked. “Sure! Anything for my biggest fan!” Chloe took a picture of Brialee and Elliott and Elliott autographed a card. “Good luck on Sunday!” Brialee said before she walked away.
The next morning the girls headed back over to the track. At ten o’clock the Busch Series qualifying started. Chloe spotted J.J. Yeley. She made her way over to him and got an autograph and a picture. Denny Hamlin was the last driver to qualify. As he was out on the track, Brialee started yelling. She was saying, “Go Denny!” He won the pole! After getting back to his pit box, Denny got out of his car. He walked past Brialee and Chloe. Of course, being one of her favorite drivers, Brialee started snapping pictures. Denny stopped to smile and went on his way.
At last, the Busch Series race was getting ready to start. Brialee and Chloe were asked to give the starting command. “Gentlemen, start your engines!” they yelled. The race began about ten minutes later. The first part of the race went wonderful. There was no cautions and Denny Hamlin was in the lead. On lap 99, Reed Sorenson started to have car problems. His engine had blown up. Brialee and Chloe quickly went over to where his garage was. They knew he would not be able to finish the race. Brialee had a huge crush on Reed Sorenson. She had not seen him before now so she thought this would be a great opportunity. As he pilled into the garage, she started taking pictures. He got out of his car and looked at the girls. “Who are you?” he asked. Brialee stared for a moment and said, “Uhh I am .. I am” “She is Brialee and I am Chloe. She really likes you so she can’t think of anything to say.” said Chloe as she laughed. Brialee’s face turned bright red and she hit Chloe. “Well, hey Brialee! How are you?” said Reed. “Hey!” is all she could say back. She got an autograph and a picture with him then went back to watch the rest of the race. Denny Hamlin started drifting back towards the end of the race. But J.J. Yeley started getting up towards the front. With only two laps remaining, J.J. Yeley managed to get in the lead. Chloe started to scream. J.J. Yeley won the race! The girls made their way over to Victory Lane. They took some pictures of J.J. Yeley and congratulated him. They went back to the hotel and ordered room service. They went to sleep wondering what the next day will bring.
Sunday was going to be a huge day. The girls had to get up about seven o’clock to get ready for the Nextel Cup practice. They got to the track just when practicing started. They were walking around by the pits and garages. A NASCAR Official came over to them and wanted to know if they wanted to wave the green flag at the start of the race. Of course, they wanted to. As they continued to walk, they ran into Greg Biffle. “Can we get your autograph? You are my dad’s favorite driver!” Brialee said. “Of course,” Greg Biffle replied. He signed a postcard for them. They got to talking and Chloe told him how they had won the radio contest. Greg was being totally random. He said that he had a golf cart. “Oh! I have never driven one of them before!” said Chloe. “Well, you can borrow mine if you want,” Greg said. So he showed the girls how to work it and they were off. They just had to have it back in a couple of hours.
The one person Chloe had no seen yet, was Brian Vickers. He was good at keeping himself away from everyone. As the girls were driving along the road by the garages, they saw Martin Truex Jr.. Chloe turned her head and forgot she was driving and started to go off to the side. Brian Vickers just happened to be standing there. She hit him, by accident of course. He started to yell at her. She told him that she was sorry. Everything was fine then.
Finally, it was time to wave the flag. The girls went up to the flag stand. As the cars came to the start/finish line, they waved the flag. The race was a good one. Once again, Elliott Sadler won!
That night, the girls were talking about everything that had happened that weekend. They were sad that it was over. They were happy about getting to meet some of the drivers and the way the races turned out. Maybe next year they could come back.
They left to go back home on Monday morning. They were excited to tell their parents everything that had happened. They couldn’t wait to get their pictures developed. On Tuesday, they went back to work and showed everyone the pictures they had taken and how much fun they had.
