I like KG, but you never know.

Man, that would be huge! Of course I think it would kill the T-Wolves but it would still be huge.

he wants to go to a big market team and you know he is from the Chi, but didn't want to come here when krause was here, but since he is gone and the wolves want him to take a paycut as they can't pay him and they bulls is one of the few big market teams that can pay him.

On Pro Basketball
Bulls have what KG wants

May 18, 2003, 10:03 PM CDT

This is the week the Bulls may be able to put together a deal for Kevin Garnett.

Word around the NBA is the Timberwolves are willing to trade Garnett, most likely to a large-market team that could meet his price as a free agent.

The Timberwolves don't want to let on they would consider a deal for their best player ever, but for the first time owner Glen Taylor recently opened the door to a deal, saying: "The only way we would probably trade him is if Kevin said that he really thought that was the best thing for him, or something like that. It would have to be built on something I couldn't even think of right now. We don't want to, and I don't think he would want to, but that would be the scenario, I suppose. I don't think I would necessarily accept that just because he said that. But that's a possibility."

Those comments to Minneapolis reporters confirmed what general managers had been hearing: Garnett could be had. And the Bulls, more than any NBA team, have the requisites to make a deal. Plus, the Bulls' door is finally open with the hiring of John Paxson as GM. Garnett, who attended his senior year of high school at Chicago's Farragut, previously said he wouldn't come to the Bulls because he blamed Jerry Krause for the team's decline after 1998.

Paying Garnett may be the key. Garnett has one season left on his six-year, $126 million contract. He is eligible for an extension that begins at $29.4 million a year. The Timberwolves cannot afford to pay that because they also want to re-sign free-agent center Rasho Nesterovic and are well over the salary cap and into luxury-tax territory. They want Garnett to take a massive pay cut. He doesn't see why when the Timberwolves cannot get out of the first round of the playoffs and cannot build around him.

The Bulls, with their huge arena and record number of suites, are one of the few teams that could afford to go well into luxury-tax territory to pay Garnett. And they have the talent to put together a deal that would look attractive to the Timberwolves.

The dealmaking starts Thursday with the NBA draft lottery. If the Bulls, with the seventh-worst record, manage to jump up for one of the top two picks, they probably would take LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony and forget any deals.

But if the Bulls get the expected pick toward the bottom of the top 10, they could send that selection to Minnesota to make up an intriguing package of players. The deal probably would be the Bulls' No. 1 pick, Tyson Chandler, Jay Williams, Eddie Robinson and Jalen Rose.

With the draft picks and young talent, the Timberwolves could develop a talented team and maintain their balance sheet.

The Bulls' rotation would include Eddy Curry and Jamal Crawford, who are the closest friends on the team, Garnett, Donyell Marshall, Marcus Fizer and a perimeter player with the salary-cap exception such as Corey Maggette, Antonio Daniels, Jason Terry or James Posey. That's a team that could get to the NBA Finals. Like the Nets and Pistons, the Bulls should be saying, "Why not us? Why not now?"

Cereal thriller: The Raptors are crossing their fingers that Vince Carter doesn't get injured representing the team at Thursday's draft lottery. Allan Houston will represent the New York Knicks, and Caron Butler will go for the Miami Heat. Apparently, all this losing has gotten to Miami coach-GM Pat Riley. The Heat is inviting fans to bring boxes of Lucky Charms cereal to the arena to watch the drawing Thursday and sending a winning fan to New York for the draft in June. Personnel director B.J. Armstrong will represent the Bulls.

Former Bull report: Randy Brown is retiring after a season with the Suns and is looking to get into coaching. Brown's brother, Jermaine, from Minnesota State, worked out for the Timberwolves last week. In San Antonio, Steve Kerr also is likely to retire after this season and will look into broadcasting, joining former teammate Will Perdue in the field. Perdue can be seen on ESPN's NBA coverage.

Class act: Trying to stop Kobe Bryant was one thing, but the Spurs' Bruce Bowen had to sweat a little more recently in attempting to get his degree at the University of Texas-San Antonio. Bowen had morning classes through the first round of the playoffs. His professor, Aimee Shelton, has a three-absence limit. Bowen told her on the first day of class that he wouldn't be able to abide by it because he played professional basketball.

"We don't have a semipro team in San Antonio," Shelton told him.

When he told her that he played for the Spurs, Shelton said he still needed to bring a note from his coach.

"I figured he was a benchwarmer or a new recruit," she said. "Then I went to a game three weeks later and nearly fell out of my seat. I saw him run out and yelled, 'That's Bruce! He's a starter?'"

Though the Spurs sometimes didn't arrive home from road trips in the regular season until 3 a.m., Bowen showed up for class each morning. "What impresses me," Shelton said, "is that he's always early. Never has he been even a minute late."

When Bowen is out of town, Shelton e-mails him her lecture. He was expected to turn in his projects by e-mail at the same time as the rest of the class.

Dallas doings: If we all have to endure Mavs owner Mark Cuban's self-promoting antics in the Western Conference finals, we can feel good for Proviso East's Michael Finley, a truly good guy who endured back-to-back seasons of 20 and 19 wins before Don Nelson (not Cuban) came in and began the team's turnaround.

"That's the reason I kept re-signing, because I wanted to be a part of this when we got here," Finley said. "I was part of those dark days, when 20 wins was considered a successful season. I've been here when we were the doormats of the league."

The community was screaming for coach-GM Nelson to be fired after the Game 1 home loss to the Kings. Now the Mavs have won two straight Game 7s. Said Nelson: "I'm the same dumb guy they were ready to bury last week. But I guess you put in a couple of guys who contribute to a couple of wins, and all of a sudden everybody says you're pushing the right buttons."

Stick a fork in him: The Lakers contacted former Pacers center Rik Smits late in the season to try to get him to sign. He's 36 and had surgeries on both feet, both knees, an elbow and an ankle during his 12-year playing career. "I'm done," he said.

Help wanted: Sacramento's Geoff Petrie is the general manager Portland covets. He was the first draft selection in Blazers history in 1970, became an All-Star there, joined the front office not long after his playing days ended and eventually rose to senior vice president of basketball operations before joining the Kings in 1994 and turning them into championship contenders. Kings co-owner Joe Maloof said recently he wouldn't stand in the way of Petrie, then backed off.

Said Chris Webber: "We have to have Petrie and [coach Rick] Adelman here. We don't win a championship without those two. What we did in this series [going to seven games without Webber] just shows again what a great job Geoff and coach have done."

HOLY ****!!!!

That's a big trade.

I might start hording some KG RCs now. Imagine what this guy could do in the East with nobody to defend him. Plus he will be a in much bigger market than Minnesota.

I should not have posted this. Kept it to myself and made out like a bandit on his cards, cause the way the lineup looks with KG in it, they will go deep into the playoffs...

sometimes I hate putting a light on some players I am watching, KG is highly undervalued in the hobby world, just like t-mac. They get no love.

Don't worry gio.

I'm not going to get that many of his cards. I was just going to pick up a few at the local card shop if I could find any. Nothing big. Its not like I have the money to corner the market on KG cards.

That would definitely be a HUGE trade, but I think it would be dumb for the Wolves to do that. I guess their thinking is they aren't going to go anywhere with just KG and because of the cap they can't afford anyone else with KG so they'll try to start over young.

If that one other person is Eddy Curry, I'd do it in a split second.

KG is bound to be making $28M next year and will be demanding $20M+ for each year thereafter.

This guy, although now a superstar, has been more than compensated from the first day he stepped out of high school on to the NBA courts.

I'd do the trade in a heart beat.

Isn't there a salary cap in basketball so he can only make the limit?

I wouldn't do the trade if I were the Wolves.

There are plenty of people who are making way too much money in the NBA and at least Garnett is worth it.

IggyWH
05-19-2003, 04:41 PM
There is... but KG's contract was from before the salary cap came on. His team is charged a certain exemption maximum towards the cap but the team still has to pay him that 20+ million each year which is DAMN steep.

podstock
05-19-2003, 04:56 PM
pwaldo...last year, the salary cap for a team was something in the $55+M

KG had his contract done before the current salary cap rules; his contract was one reason the current rules were quickly passed.

HOWEVER, there is no limit to how much a player can make in a year.

Theoretically, Shaq could be paid $100M per year, but that means the owner has to pay dollar for dollar any amount over the salary cap. So, if salary cap is $60M, that means the owner owes $40M in tax to the NBA. And that doesn't include salaries from the other 11 players.

KG needs to be paired with another center -- Shaq and Ducan -- in order to get his title.

KG is definitely overpaid.

pwaldo
05-19-2003, 05:52 PM
Okay I think I figured it out now.

Players who were playing before the rule came in can make whatever they want a year BUT new players coming in subject to a contract limit.

they call it the grandfather rule, if the wolves paid KG what he want they will have to pay a luxury tax to the league.

Thanks gio.

I knew it was called something like that but I wasn't sure. I remember that rule after they had their strike.

Haven't watched basketball that much since then except for this season. So I'm not well versed in all of the rules.

the media is saying the if they get the 1 or 2 pick the deal is off the table, but anything other than that they are seriously thinking about making the deal, but the wolves owners are saying they are not shopping KG.... they are lying I bet.

Of course they are lying.

Nobody will openly come out and say that they are trading away someone like that.

I remember back before Bledsoe was on the Bills the Pats kept saying nope the deal is going through will just keep Bledsoe. Then Bam! Sent to the Bills.

They play dumb to try to see if they can get a better deal.

The owner of the Wolves is a moron!!

After giving KG that ridiculous 7-yr 120+M contract, he then does an under-the-table contract with Joe Smith, IN WRITING!!

Who the hell is Joe Smith, and what has he done in the NBA that you or I haven't done?

ok ok..he's scored a few points, got a few rebounds.

That trade would suck. Don't give up KG, he's the only half decent player on the team.

As an owner, if I can get 3-4 above average guys in exchange for one superstar, I'd do it in a heartbeat (except for Shaq, b/c there's no one big enough to defend him one on one).

Look at KG --- in the past 7 years, what have the Timberwolves done: made playoffs, lost in 1st round.

Things have to change. Either get some superstar to team up with KG or trade KG for a bunch of draft picks and the kitchen sink

Yeah I'd put them as lock to make the playoffs in the East with that lineup.

I still can't see these trade doing good for the Wolves. You lose such a good marketable player and once he gets traded the fans will not come to see the team because it will not do anything in the West. At least with Garnett the team has been good. They just been a little unlucky when getting the draw for the first round of the playoffs.
