I have been tossing around the idea of opening a card shop in my area. The town is on the Oregon coast and has about 30,000 people here. There is only one card shop around here, and it is a very small one. Mostly deals in magic and yu gi oh cards. He had a fair selection of football, but a very small selection of baseball. He does not advertise, and I think there are very few people, that may be interested in getting back into collecting, that know he is around.
I am sure there are a quite a few sports card owners on here, and would like some advice. I would like to make a timeline of about 5 years or sooner to open. Any advice would be appreciated thanks

i tossed around the idea... said i would give it a go then did a little research and honestly i think it would be tough to start out a new one.... a lot of the exhisting shops are finding it hard to make it and a lot of them have had customers coming in since the 80's. I truthfully think the reason a lot of people go to shops is they are afraid to see them close but if they have no ties to a new one opening i dont think it would be very profitable. Also you mentioned that the other card mainly deals in yugio or whatever it is. I talked to the owner near me and he said half his sales are on that stuff... with gas and taxes etc.. so high more and more adults who have a lot of the interest in sports cards just cant afford to buy as much. He said rarely will someone come in and slap down 3-4 hundred on cards but every day there are kids coming in snatching up all the yugio he can stock. Obviously every area of the country is different i would just caution you to do some research before taking the plunge.

eBay has killed sportscard shops so unless you're rich,I wouldn't do it.

Thanks for the input. Both of your comments are things I have thought of. I am really skeptical as of right now...that is why I am asking advice from this forum. As of now, I do most of my shopping on the net. However, that is because the selection of cards in the shop in my area is pretty poor.
Again...thanks for your comments as it is much valued
