View Full Version : Patrick Roy Retirement
radioheadfloyd 05-27-2003, 01:26 PM I am hearing news reports that Roy is holding a press conference tomorow to announce his retirement. I knew it was coming, but would have liked to see him keep on playing.
I wonder what moves the Avalanche will make in the off season... I am not sure Aebischer is ready and Forsberg may not be coming back :(
podstock 05-27-2003, 01:30 PM Don't take an athlete's word that he's retiring.
Michael Jordan's retired several times over.
I expect Jordan to be back playing again in a few years.
Nowadays, you can not trust what a player says.
Once the player is out in the real world, and sees that you can't make $150,000 a day, he'll come back into his particular sport.
I'd bet Roy returns within 1-3 years....much like Lemieux.
radioheadfloyd 05-27-2003, 01:56 PM Well, I wish these players would just play until they can't play anymore and stop all the drama. I wouldnt be surprised if Jordan was playing next season. I am not sure if Roy could come back after a couple years off, but who knows.
pwaldo 05-27-2003, 02:29 PM That will be a huge blow to the Avs if they lose Roy. One of the greatest goaltenders ever.
Jakeklock0019 05-27-2003, 06:53 PM THE greatest goalie ever. Hard to believe he would quit after going down how he did against my Wild.
IggyWH 05-27-2003, 07:29 PM He should have retired at least 2 years ago... the Lanche will be better off without him.
stkmtimo 05-27-2003, 07:37 PM It's a huge loss for hockey, as he was the greatest goaltender ever to play, but this just gives guys like Brodeur, Giguere, etc. to have a chance at larger stardom. He certainly will not be forgotten.

The Avs will be a lot WORSE without Roy. He gets them to the playoffs every year and they really don't have another goalie to fill in.
gioperation 05-28-2003, 01:46 PM and as long as he is in uniform you will never know who can step up and get the job done. Put him on the staff and let him teach young goalies.
YankeePride 05-28-2003, 02:31 PM I say good riddance! Now Brodeur will get his due as the best in the game today. Roy was great in his time, but it has passed. He is now just very, very good - so I'm genuinely glad to see him retire while people will still miss him.

Even though I hate hockey anymore, I've been suckered into watching a ton of Lanche games the last 2 years because my boy has that NHL package and he loves Colorado. Roy was no longer the great goalie he once was and has let up WAY too many soft goals. His base salary last year was 8.5 million... you don't think the Lanche could find a good young goalie for 1/2 that? The only reason he stuck around was he was getting paid big time and he's all about the personal records. He wanted to get that all-time wins record before he retired. Now that he got it, that's it for him and like I said in my first post, the Lance will be better off without him.
stkmtimo 05-28-2003, 03:57 PM With getting a young goalie like that, it reminds me of Alfonso Soriano of the Yanks. They get him so cheaply and he does so much. The Avalanche need a new goalie like that.

podstock 05-28-2003, 04:37 PM Soriano ain't gonna be that cheap for long. But, Steinbrenner's got fat wallets, so I'd expect Soriano to sign some sh*t like a 40-year $500M contract.
Sky's the limit as far as baseball salaries are concerned.
stkmtimo 05-28-2003, 05:00 PM That's for sure. He's a great asset, but the reason he's not getting paid much is because he speaks broken English and really isn't familiar with the pay system, and I read a report he accepted a deal even without his agent's consent!

RedMania 05-30-2003, 01:06 AM this opens the gates for martin brodeur, he will retire as the best goalie ever in the NHL.
31 years old, 365 wins and it looks like his 2nd cup
ILuvSportsCards 05-31-2003, 12:07 AM Martin Brodeur has always been known as the second best goalie, now simply you can;t say that anymore. He is the best and will always be. Roy had his fame, but now it's Brodeur's time.
