View Full Version : Why no hate for Carl Pohlad?

He owns a winning team in the Twins.

But he never spends any money on them.

The guy is the 258th richest person in the US with $1.7 billion dollars.

He just keeps the team at a very low payroll so he can get richer. So why isn't there more hate for this guy from Twins fans?

because we/they know that is why he is so rich, I have talked to the twins players about this, but they love minesota, did I ever tell you the story when I met him(pohlad) I was in fort myers for spring training I think 98, and I was in the locker room talking trash with a few of the players and pohlad walked in(looks like he is 150 years old) and hos people were introducting him to him players(lol) they were like this is brad radke, he won 20 games last year, this is kirby puckett, he is a future HOF'er(lol) I was like this has got to be a joke, but it wasn't this guy doesn't even know who is on his team or in the organization.

When I was talking to a few of them about the contraction deal, they were like mr. pohlad is a very wealthy man, the team is worth like 120 million, but selig will give him 250 million, who in the hell wouldn't sell it.

here is another thing you know selig borrowed money from pohlads finance company to help finish building the brewers ballpark and he owed pohlad money, so he gave him the option...but no one talked about that(illegal) owners are not suppose to borrow monwy from other owners w/o approval of the rest of them, and pete rose is banned..

LOL! Ryan, that's hilarious. Sounds like he has no idea what's going on with his own team. Pretty sad.

hell he doesn't care, as long as he turns a profit, but I hear he is very fair.

I wish he would spend money the twins could get some more pitching then

more pitching, who do they need, one reason the twins are very selective is that they have great team chemistry and they will not bring a guy in that will break that up, Reed is gone after this year, he makes 8 million and that would free with a spot for santana to come out of the bullpen.

A guess you are right. The guy is very old and he doesn't care what happens with the team as long as he makes money.

But I did here that he is looking to sell the team so hopefully somebody else can take over and make that team a contender.

Make the team a contender? They are a great team who is in first place and went to the ALCS last year

I mean one that competes every year and doesn't trade away its players.

He almost didn't sign Hunter to that contract extension because he didn't want to spend the money. But then some smart person told him that he'd lose more money if he didn't sign Hunter.

I should have used the word stable rather than a contender.

i know someone who carried Pohlad's groceries out for him and didn't get tipped. The guy is cheap in every way.

you will find that most wealthy people are like that, especially if they inherited their money(I dunno if carl inherited it or not)

read or listen to "the millionaire next door" instead of buying new shoe's they get them resoled.

Not sure why there is no hate for Pohlad....

but remember, the general principle is this:

rich people stay rich b/c they make money, and are stingy in their ways of spending it.

poor people don't make as much money, and live a life above and beyond their means.

When I attended Scholl College, I lived in Chicago downtown.

For those who live in that area (Division and Clark), you know that the rich and the poverty-stricken are separated by only 2-4 blocks.

And when I used to go to Jewel, a big supermarket in that area, I'd see kids walking from the projects/ghettos in their Nikes and Air Jordans.

I do not mean to be discriminatory, but when you are poor, there's absolutely no reason you should have in your possession $100+ Air Jordans.

Ever wonder how some athletes who make millions become poor. It's because they do not know how to live within their means.

carl lidner is the same way, as many owners are. the boss and a few others spend the money to win, but i have to say 1 thing. the TV markets and TV contracts means guarenteed profit each year even if they spend 150 million, other teams might have the money, but cant risk it. its like the stock market, you might each have the same amount of money to start, but if you have a guarenteed profit maker, your going to be more likely to spend it than a guy who isnt guarenteed to get his return. i think its kinda crap how some guys dont, but remember, these are businessman before owners. lets hope something can be worked out and return this sports to its fair and national pastime.

I don't believe that will happen Redmania.

Money rules, and money is power. Power corrupts.

If you learn nothing in history class, you only need to know the above line.

The good ol' days of the national pastime, when you don't have to spend $100 for a family of 4, are over.

While that is true about the TV markets and contracts you also have to realize that many owners do nothing to increase awareness of their team.

They sell off marketable players and then fans don't come to the stadium, watch on tv, or buy merchandise.

Sometimes you need to SPEND money to MAKE money.

i totally agree pwaldo, this coming from a guy whos team is 2/3 of the way there. we got a great offense and a decent bullpen, add that with a new stadium, great tradition and a baseball town. i dont know the specifics, but going out and spending the extra to get starting pitching, not to mention guys who ARE expendable in the 2 strong areas, it could bring this team to a serious contender. will it happen, probably not. if it did, would they be guarenteed to win, hell no. but one thing they would do is generate more support and revenue in those areas than they already have. i have kinda been in denial with everyone who disses the reds, boone, and bowden, but although they are not as bad as they get labeled, its starting to wear on me. the talent is on this team, but the wins cant come on walk off HR's everynight, its simply impossible.

Well I think the Reds have done a very good job so far. It takes time to build a great team and they are almost there. They have one of the best offenses in baseball and need some pitching.

So if they don't get a pitcher for this season or next season then I would be mad as a fan. They are in a weak division and with pitching they could easily be in first place.

If I were the Reds I might and try to trade one of the hitters on the team to try and get a pitcher. Not Dunn or Kearns but somebody else that has value. Because they would really not miss the offense.

well, if Griffey gets hot --- the Red have themselves an attractive trade bait
