View Full Version : SCF Official Product Review: 2008 Press Pass Eclipse
Enigma 03-19-2008, 03:43 PM Thanks to the wonderful folks at Press Pass, we are able to do a break/review of 2008 Press Pass Eclipse.
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/enigmas_cards/Racing/08PPECRCHB.jpg
Product Description:
20 packs per box, 5 cards per pack
SRP: $134.99-$139.99 per box
2008 Eclipse offers a 90-card base set with two foil parallels, Gold (#/25) and Red (#/1). The Red parallel is Hobby-exclusive, meaning they were not inserted into retail packs. We were fortunate enough to put together a complete base set with the box and the box yielded one Gold parallel. Also, Press Pass likes to put in variations of some base card to give collectors added fun when put a set together. We did manage to pull one of the known variations, the Back To The Future Dale Earnhardt Jr. with him pictured in the car instead of a child photo.
The look of this year's release is nice, but not eye-popping. The black background really makes it hard for scanning purposes. However, it does keep focus on the driver or car pictured on the card, which is always a plus. Definitely a wise choice if looking for a set to display.
The inserts this year are Stellar (1:2 packs), Escape Velocity (1:6 packs), Hyperdrive (1:12 packs) and Star Tracks (1:18 packs). There is a Hobby-exclusive version of Star Tracks with those cards #/250, which we did pull one. For those that do not know, Star Tracks are made utilizing an actual race-used tire to enhance the design the of the card. It has a rough feel, but is really nice to view. Personally, I enjoyed the rainbow foil effect of the the Escape Velocity cards, but I think the shiny color background of the Hyperdrive cards was overkill and not eye-pleasing.
On a hobby box of Eclipse, it states that you can expect 2 memorabilia cards and 1 autograph on average. The memorabilia cards offered in Eclipse are from the car covers used at races to protect the cars while outside at a track. The sets are called Under Cover (one swatch) and Double Cover (two swatches, one each from teammates) and there are four types of die-cuts (Drivers, Drivers Eclipse, Drivers Name and Drivers NASCAR). There are Hobby only holo-versions numbered to #25. Eclipse also offers an Under Cover Signature Series, which has a piece of the car cover along with an auto and the cards are numbered to the driver's door number. This is a definite must-have for any driver collector. The odds on pulling a car cover card is 1:10 packs. We pulled two of these cards out of the box.
Autographs are seeded 1:20 packs on average. There is a regular auto that is only offer in 2008 Press Pass and 2008 Eclipse, called Press Pass Autographs. There are Press Plate Autos, 4 for each driver, obviously numbered to 1 for each card. Then there are Teammate Autos which could have between 2-4 drivers on them, numbered to 35 or less. We broke the bank on this by pulling 4 different auto cards! Two of the auto cards actually came in the same pack!
One other card offered in Eclipse is called Four Wide. It contains four pieces of race used memorabilia (sheet metal, tire, car cover and an oversized firesuit swatch). These are numbered to 50 per driver. Exclusive to hobby boxes will have a checkered flag swatch as the oversized piece and the cards will be numbered to 1. Unfortunately, we were not fortunate enough to pull one.

skippy 03-19-2008, 11:03 PM Great box, love the graphics, themes, lol..actually most things about Eclipse.
How many packs are in a box? 24 packs in a Hobby box 20 in retail
What's the avg price now or SRP? 3.00 for retail depends on hobby, each store owner will pay differently per box, usually around 5.50-6.50 pack. As a site we offered these at 99.25 a box.
Thanks,
Rich
Very nice break Tony, talk about a hot box.

Thanks for the box info. Skippy.. I think that's important for the casual, and not so casual reader.
kahnefan 03-20-2008, 07:51 PM ok thats just sicking that you gave that box a 22/25, you are only suppose to pull 1 auto and 2 race used on av. and you got 2 half case pulls..its sad that you don't even know what you've got, and it should be put in contest for racing members only
Trains975 03-20-2008, 09:01 PM Hey Tony!! Now That Was a SWEET Box Break There... :winking0071: I could Use the 2 Jeff Gordon's for My PC.....
THANKS ALOT!!!!!!!!
dpono22 03-21-2008, 06:43 PM that box beat the odds for sure on that product!!! very nice of Press Pass as well, we should pursue a multi sport(fb) review for 2008 Press Pass fb if possible!!!
SingleDaddyof2 03-21-2008, 11:11 PM Thanks Press Pass for sending SCF a box of your fine product for review! :thumb:
What a great box sent to us--now we've got some great new items for the SCF Prize Vault!
munozqc886 03-22-2008, 02:20 AM ok thats just sicking that you gave that box a 22/25, you are only suppose to pull 1 auto and 2 race used on av. and you got 2 half case pulls..its sad that you don't even know what you've got, and it should be put in contest for racing members only
I'd have to agree, would hate to see it go to someone who wouldn't appreciate it, or who doesn't support the sport, especially in some rigged contest.
SingleDaddyof2 03-22-2008, 03:12 AM ...and it should be put in contest for racing members onlyThat's a simplistic and controversial suggestion on what to do with these racing cards (unless you can provide a detailed explanation of how to implement your suggestion without offending anyone). It would be great if each of these cards went to a home where they will be cherished and appreciated. About 27 chase cards were pulled and SCF has more than 27 racing fan members. How exactly do you expect us to fairly give away these cards to only SCF's racing fans? Some would get chase cards while others would not. How do you decide which racing fans get the chase cards and which racing fans don't? And how exactly do we define "racing fan" for purposes of giving away these cards? Should SCF exclude racing fans from getting great cards from other sports' box breaks?
By suggesting that these cards go only to racing fans opens up a can o' worms that should really stay unopened. It would just be way too complex to weed out "fake" racing fans (who want great racing cards only for tradebait) and to determine SCF's real racing fans and to satisfy all of them.
SHELBYSALEEN 03-22-2008, 07:14 AM Actually I do not think her idea is that hard to implement. It has been done before on this board already.
When there is an entry for the contest you [the staff] go through the post and so many of them need to be racing. The racing staff knows who the regulars are.
What is controversial is the idea that they should be donated to the card cash store, [which would eliminate 90 percent of the racing people], Donate it to the staff [i have zero problems with the staff winning this but to give it to them instead of opening it to all race members seems wrong to me]
I have two completed sales in the last week on the basketball board but if upper deck donated a box of bball and you pulled a lebron james autograph I DO NOT THINK I SHOULD QUALIFY to enter.
There are some contest that should be open only to the people that actually use the particular forum. I find it funny that you say how do you not offend anyone. When did that matter. We the racing community had the most participation on the previous board and most feel like we were hijacked to come here. Then after we get here we have to send first even though we have been trading for years. My gosh i will be off the must send first list before THE PIMP. [that offends a lot of people and no one cared [racing staff excluded].
A lot of the racing members have been short changed since we got here. We have tried to deal with it and make the board the best we can. We have lost a lot of people since coming here I THINK THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS TAKE THE RACING BOX AND OPEN IT TO RACING ONLY. ITS NOT THAT DIFFICULT IF YOU TRY.
I noticed that a lot of posts on this thread have been by people we have never seen on here before. Why is that?
If this causes any problems for Les, Skippy, Shayne, Ashley, Kathy and the rest of the racing staff I apologize but enough is enough.
SHELBYSALEEN 03-22-2008, 08:23 AM i did notice the newman/busch teammates is going to the overall champion for the chase contest. That is great. That way anybody can still win.
Will the rest of the r/u autographs go to the racing contests

SHLBYSALEN - Thanks for your heartfelt response. I don't mean to ruffle any feathers but I do have some questions. You say her idea has already been done on SportsCardForum before?--or do you mean in the racing forum pre-SCF? Well, wherever it was done, if it was done smoothly and professionally, then I gotta give all involved props for that. Could you provide some links to show where her idea was already implemented? And does the racing staff agree with the "racing fans only" concept for box breaks?
And in case you didn't know, in general, whenever SCF staff or members hold contests offering cards from a specific sport, they do not say those cards will be going only to fans of that sport. Check out the contests in the Contests forum (http://www.sportscardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92) and the various sport's contest forums. Pretty much all of those contests don't exclude anyone from participating and winning. Should SCF limit winners of premium baseball cards to baseball fans only? That's not a precedent I'd want to set. But perhaps racing fans and racing cards are different and should be allowed to exclude others from winning racing cards from box breaks. May I request that you make a crystal-clear justification of why this should be so? My apologies if it appears that I'm giving you a hard time. I really just like seeing issues from other people's point of view.
I noticed that a lot of posts on this thread have been by people we have never seen on here before. Why is that? Good question. Many were alerted to this thread by this Announcement thread (http://www.sportscardforum.com/showthread.php?t=464092) in SCF's Announcements forum. The SCF staff was also advised to check out this box break because future box breaks of other products from other sports will be done by various SCF staff. The box break from this particular thread is to be used by the staff as a template or guideline for future box breaks. Also for myself and others, this is the very first box break/review of company-supplied product I've ever seen on SCF. We're hoping there's a lot more to come.
If this causes any problems for Les, Skippy, Shayne, Ashley, Kathy and the rest of the racing staff I apologize but enough is enough.Let me offer my apologies too if I ruffled any feathers. :confused0024:

outsk8u 03-22-2008, 12:43 PM I knew there had to be a rule for that....
outsk8u 03-22-2008, 01:25 PM http://www.sportscardforum.com/showthread.php?t=417479
here was the contest...and it went really well...
Hope I don't get Shane in trouble...
the Nascar collectors are more of a family than most other sports...
they have been togather a long time...
from the original board where we had to put up with Flaming from Pokemon kids ...and later trolled by all other sports when Nascar got its big marketing push...
to moving to SCS ..till it was sabotaged ...then to STC...where Racing was the #1 board on the site..more post..more trades ...and more members than all the other areas...and it isn't site SPAMMING which is a 10 point spanking since both sites no longer exist....then the racing community is transplanted to here..where everything is different...most racing collectors keep only to the racing section...we have more respect than to go to other areas and try and pick off another forums contest prizes...we are more content to trade ..sell (except for packs and boxes)...and talk about the sport the hobby and life in general in our own little section of the world....
just like the Card Cash thought for the racing cards....Card cash hasn't been available since before the merger..so most of the racing people wouldnt have any...kinda curious how some have a bunch and most have none...
but anyway ...hopefully this will help you understand a little more about the Nascar section...
and for all the staff that have came over to the racing section for the first time WELCOME ...feel free to watch the race next Sunday...see if you enjoy it ...if you do..come on over to the racing section ...and start collecting....the more people and sites we have to support our hobby the better it is for all of us...

ok so this was the final score of a free box of Eclipse...
since you don't open much racing I will help you a little on your odds...
the pack that had two teammates autos in it ...was a once in a lifetime hit...most racing collectors have opened for years and never been close to that big of a hit...
I would love to see what it would take to get a 5 out of a box...
and as for FUN...you got basically double odds...it doesn't get more fun than that....
in the one pack you pulled two cards that are to be inserted as the case topper...meaning that only one should have been in the case...not 2 in the pack..they had packing problems with them sticking togather....this is the 8th dual teammate auto pack that I am aware of ....
so honestly to get 2 teammate autos that will book out for over $400 for the pair ....and only give the product a 4.5 seems to be off ....
maybe you thought they were only $40 or $50 cards...
but the Busch Newmans have averaged $100 on open auctions...
and the first Kahne Mayfield redemptions sold for $175...and the next few have stayed in the $140 range...so it should book $250 and the Busch Newman should pull in $150 in book...
thought I would clear the air on that in case most of you weren't aware of it...
pa43fan 03-22-2008, 01:45 PM well see that is the problem,
a abseball collector wins a kahne/mayfield dual auto card. comes into the racing forum where they have never been, asks for baseball, which 95% of racing collectors don't have. so it ends up going to what i call a part time racing collector in a trade in the baseball sction.
so i go to the basketball section and win a dual jordon/james auto. i gurantee you the basketball collectors go nuts because a racing collector comes in and wins their card. there is no diplomatic way to handle box breaks like this.
just have mike sell the **** things on ebay and use the money for something the site needs like more racing traders, cause they seem to be getting fewer and fewer.

outsk8u 03-22-2008, 01:51 PM and this is the first time a box given to the Racing Community has been opened for a PRODUCT REVIEW ...all other Press Pass boxes had been used in contest which were usually grand prizes for year long or month long contest which were mostly entered by Nascar forum members since it was required that you have a basic understanding of the sport in order to have a chance in the competition...
so this is a crossroads for the racing forum...
imagine how happy a race forum member would have been to have busted that box...
pa43fan 03-22-2008, 01:54 PM oh and now all the sudden press pass is cool. i read in the other sports forum how press pass products suck. they don't want a trade involving press pass football or basketball.
press pass is all we have in racing and WE support them. we may have complaints but we sure don't say they suck and don't want their stuff. reason is most racing collectors do it for the love of collecting, not the value of reselling the cards. maybe press pass is low end in football and basketball but why come in and have all these people say great break and thanks press pass and oh by the way your other stuff sucks.
one side of the fence or the other. oh and i have 650 card cash, is that enough for the teammates auto. no way it will sell to a baseball or football or basketball or hockey dude that has thousands of card cash, most obtained before we the racing collectors even got here.
i am telling you this now. sell the teammates auto on ebay. get what u can and buy some lower end stuff to use for contest sponsored by the racing forum. and then buy a mailing stamp machine so they prizes can get out before 6 months of waiting

spoodini 03-22-2008, 02:47 PM Settle down everyone :)
The box was given to SCF to break as a company and provide a review for it's members. Sure we would have loved to given a box away to a member for a totally awesome contest, but that's just not the way it works when we are given product to review. And yeah, any racing collector would love a box like this no matter how they received it.
We reviewed the product and the vast majority of the cards are going to the members of the site either through the prize vault, contest, or able to purchase with CC. We are not allowed to sell the product as the companies do not approve that we make money off something given to us for free which I couldn't agree with more.
This is going to be the way it works for all sports when we start getting football, baseball, and basketball boxes as well.
And I'm not a racing collector but I would love a Dale Jr., Tony Stewart, or either Labonte autograph someday for my personal collection for a variety of personal reasons. (And I would never request one from a company box break as that isn't my place) I think there may be others like that too. I understand your racing section is very tight knit and you have your community here, but maybe someone wins a contest for a racing card and they become the next biggest racing collector on here? Even if a card was given to a staff member (we have rules on that too) they have to keep it for their personal collection or can only trade it, never sell it.
I just thought I would shed some light to you guys on how this works now and in the future.

Kahne/Sadler $125 $250
So, once again you show you have your finger right on the pulse of NASCAR cards./

mikesilvia 03-22-2008, 05:29 PM I have a few inputs on this.
First, this box was opened by Tony because this is our first box break. Could it have been reviewed better by a Racing fan? Sure thing. Tony is doing the first few box breaks to set a template. Your feedback helps adjust the template. After the first few box breaks we will identify the hardest working staff and they will perform the breaks. Obviously, the sport will help dictate who does the break. Guys like Les and Mike would be perfect guys to break and review a racing box. I can promise you Les, Mike and other racing staff members will break a lot of boxes int he future.
Many of you are looking at the short-term and completely overlooking the long-term. If Press Pass sponsors SCF for several years we will be breaking 100s of racing boxes and the vast majority will be broken by racing staff members.
I also see people complaining that racing members have the lowest amount of Card Cash. Well, I know I have posted several times over the past 4 months that anyone can earn 150 to 300 Card Card for every article written. If you write 10 small articles (a few paragraphs) you can get over 1,000 Card Cash a month. I have yet to see a single racing article posted. There is plenty of opportunity to get Card Cash on SCF. If you pass up the opportunities then you have no one to blame but yourself. If you feel that there is no opportunity then you can contact the staff or post info in the Feedback forum. I have yet to see anything posted in the feedback forum that the racing area has less chance to earn Card Cash. If this is true I will address and make sure the Racing team provides more opportunity.
Everyone needs to take a deep breath and be happy that we are getting free product for all of the SCF members to enjoy. We have three ways for members to get the product; contests, by request and through the Card Cash store. I'm sure that most racing collectors will be the ones requesting the cards. We will also do our best to ensure that the contest cards are held in the appropriate sport. Finally, if a card is in the Card Card store for 5,000 CC, I don't see a football guy using his CC to buy a $50 racing card. If it happens, then so be it. He earned that Card Cash.
I recently purchased about $250 BV in cards from outsk8u (http://www.sportscardforum.com/member.php?u=23633) and every one of them will be used for racing contests and to stock the store.
I will re-iterate this again. If you feel like a second class citizen on SCF or see problems then make sure you address them with the SCF Racing staff. I can promise you that Les, Mike and everyone else is looking out for the racing member's best interest. There is little I can do if you do not voice your opinions to staff or in the feedback forum and don't participate in Card Cash opportunities.

here was the contest...and it went really well...
Hope I don't get Shane in trouble...Thanks for the link! If the prize cards were sent to SCF direct from Press Pass shouldn't credit have been given to Press Pass? I've read the contest thread that you've linked above, and it did go well...except for that one bit of controversy with a relatively new member who felt he was a racing fan but was still excluded from the contest. And also that other member who was excluded at first but was later permitted to post a guess.
the Nascar collectors are more of a family than most other sports...
they have been togather a long time...
from the original board where we had to put up with Flaming from Pokemon kids ...and later trolled by all other sports when Nascar got its big marketing push...
to moving to SCS ..till it was sabotaged ...then to STC...where Racing was the #1 board on the site..more post..more trades ...and more members than all the other areas...and it isn't site SPAMMING which is a 10 point spanking since both sites no longer exist....then the racing community is transplanted to here..where everything is different...I hear you. I liken it to having your school closed and being forced to go to another school--things are definitely different and there are days when its tough to adjust. most racing collectors keep only to the racing section...we have more respect than to go to other areas and try and pick off another forums contest prizes...we are more content to trade ..sell (except for packs and boxes)...and talk about the sport the hobby and life in general in our own little section of the world....
just like the Card Cash thought for the racing cards....Card cash hasn't been available since before the merger..so most of the racing people wouldnt have any...kinda curious how some have a bunch and most have none...Actually Card Cash has always been available before and after the merger except for those times when the Card Cash system was being upgraded). You and every other SCF member have several opportunities every day to obtain Card Csh by visiting the "Contests, Games & Tourneys" forum (there's a link in the 2nd line of my sig). There you will find SCF's GTS (Guess the Score) games where you can win various amounts of Card Cash. That's how most of us obtain our Card Cash. In fact, on Super Bowl Sunday I even won like 1900 Card Cash playing in SCF's Super Bowl Pool. It pays to explore the different contests we have here on SCF. Ya know, many of the SCF Racing staff have quite a bit of Card Cash. Some have more than me. I've shared with you how I get my Card Cash. Perhaps they'll share with you how they get theirs.
but anyway ...hopefully this will help you understand a little more about the Nascar section...
and for all the staff that have came over to the racing section for the first time WELCOME ...feel free to watch the race next Sunday...see if you enjoy it ...if you do..come on over to the racing section ...and start collecting....the more people and sites we have to support our hobby the better it is for all of us...Thanks for the warm welcome! We really do appreciate it. And fwiw, I've actually worked at a race about 12 years ago (food concessions at the California Speedway). Geez, I never knew those cars were that loud! lol

outsk8u 03-22-2008, 06:57 PM I recently purchased about $250 BV in cards from outsk8u (http://www.sportscardforum.com/member.php?u=23633) and every one of them will be used for racing contests and to stock the store.
Yes you did...and thank you for not attempting to FORCE me to send first......that went a long way in my book toward earning respect....
when the merger took place I read up on the rules and had noticed there was freeze in the Card Cash system.there wasn't being any awarded .....as for writing articles...most any thread that I post is going to be article length...just like if you read the Feedback to Press Pass about the year in review...that was more than an article...that was the knowledge I have acquired while working with Nascard collectors all over the United States and Canada.both those that are online and those that are the top driver collectors .....just like with Eclipse...I personally know the major contents of 240 boxes of that product...so I already knew it was possibly to hit a pair of teammates out of the same pack...and the serial #'s were one off on the 3 sets of Hendrick quad and Jr/Gordons that were pulled out of the same pack....
but anyway...didn't even want to post ...cause for the most part I know I have to be an ambassador for the hobby among other things......but when I saw one of the Nascar people get singled out I felt the need to step in...
plus from the post it appeared to be an invasion of the STAFF PEOPLE...
which possibly explains why most of the racing people didn't post...
anyway I am going to disappear now that the air has been cleared and questions have been answered....and I will take that can of worms and go walleye fishing....

Ripken8fan55 03-22-2008, 11:56 PM Juat to chip in a bit here also. Alot of the cards in the racing prize vault were donated to us by Press Pass on SCS. I assume they all haven`t been given out yet by what I`ve read any way.
boomgagem 03-23-2008, 12:42 AM I'll go ahead and chime in as well.
I see my name wasn't mentioned in the hard working staff. I'll say this, When I ran the "Deal or no Deal" contest, I gave away SEVERAL of my traders for prizes, they weren't Jeff Gordon Auto's, bet they weren't Glen Wood Autos either.
I haven't PM'd anyone about being reimbursed for the cards that I gave away out of my own stash. I did that for the racing community, and the forums. And the Deal or no Deal contest was open for anyone to join.
It does upset me when the term "Hard working staff" gets thrown around and I'm not at least mentioned.
It's Mike's decision where the contents of the boxes go, but in my OPINION they should ALL be put into the prize vault, that way in the future if anyone on the racing staff decides to run a contest they won't have to use their own cards to provide prizes.

doniceage 03-23-2008, 01:04 AM Guys and Gals,
All I can say is take Mike up on fill that Feedback Forum as Mike states. Skippy, does bring things to the table but it always better if the members make numerous post and show that they would like something to be considered. I won't say it going to happen but at least you opinion been heard and you can reply (I LEFT FEEDBACK). Then take it up with Mike while Les it taking care of family matters.
Just remember a lot of us started from the same site. We can't do anything about the past just the future (sad to say but it reality).

kahnefan 03-23-2008, 11:36 AM don't know why i got attacked for making a suggestion, thought it was a free country but whatever, seems to be over with now, and shane you know your awsome..lol
i do hope that the racing members get these cards. I wouldn't be digging into any other sports if they got a box like that, its not fair to the ones who have put hard work into their collections to loose to someone who doesn't collect that sport, and all you have to do is look at someones site to know if they're a real racing fan
BowyerFan07 03-23-2008, 12:15 PM Now in my opinion Shane is one of the best racing members here, he trades his cards to people and has them send their cards to another person, always looking to help other peoples collections, he's an awesome member
