On Saturday 26-Apr-08, there was a Financial, Health, and Wellness Celebration benefiting the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation. It was held at the UIC Campas Recreational Facility in downtown Chicago. Free admission, event from 10 am to 3 pm.
Scheduled lineup, invited and scheduled to attend: Franco Harris, Jim Brown, OJ Anderson, Eric Dickerson, Thurman Thomas, Eddie George, Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, and more! NFL Great Running Backs to meet & greet all participants-autographs and photos!
Can you imagine this, 9 of the top running backs in football history, most charge over $100 an auto at shows, all at the same time, all free? A dream come true!
If you called the advertised number, they said two autographs per player. Sweet!
So, at 8 in the morning, people were lined up outside, and it was freezing. Rumors were swirling, Barry Sanders had left the night before, but Marcus Allen was replacing him. Etc. 10:20 am, they opened the doors, and the first problem was the guard at the front door said it was two items to be autographed per person attending. Anyone with three footballs or mini helmets was not allowed in. People rushed to their cars to put things away, and then ran back. All the players are en route. We get inside, and they tell us not to stand in line for autographs, but rather to go to all of the exhibit booths, and attend a financial seminar.
Dave Duerson of the 1985 Chicago Bears is there, as an unadvertised guest, and he signed autos, and Jarrett Payton, Walter Payton's son, was there, and he signed things.
Hours went by.
At 1:15 pm, they announced to everyone that due to the NFL Draft, some of the players were not coming. After many questions and evasive answers, they admitted that NONE of the advertised players were coming, the Draft was taking priority. My point is that the draft was scheduled for months, this should not have been a surprise!
So, instead of 9 or 10 NFL running back legends, I got a Jarrett Payton auto on a Score football card.
When they say that some things are too good to be true, you can truly believe it!
