Sadly, on the same day that 'Stormin' Norman Van Lier died, Bulls legend Johnny “Red” Kerr has passed away on 26-Feb-09 at the age of 76.

Kerr, a native of Chicago, was a part of the Chicago Bulls organization in various capacities for 35 of the franchise’s 43 seasons, most notably as a team broadcaster for more than 30 years. He also served as the team’s first head coach in 1966, and earned NBA Coach of the Year honors for the 1966-67 season, when he directed the first-year Bulls to a playoff appearance. Kerr is the only head coach in NBA history to lead an expansion team to the playoffs during its inaugural season. As head coach of the Bulls, Kerr directed the team to a record of 62-101 (.380). “Red” was also the franchise’s business manager for two seasons (1973-74, 1974-75).
In addition to his Bulls ties, Kerr played 12 seasons (1954-1966) in the NBA for the Syracuse Nationals, Philadelphia 76ers and the Baltimore Bullets. During his 12 years in the NBA, his teams never missed the playoffs, highlighted by Syracuse’s run to the NBA Championship in 1955. From 1954 to1965, Kerr appeared in a then-NBA record 844 consecutive games. A three-time NBA All-Star, he finished his career with more than 10,000 points and over 10,000 rebounds. In all, he appeared in 905 NBA games and averaged 13.8 ppg, 11.2 rpg and 2.2 apg in 30.7 mpg. In recognition of his significant contributions, for over 50 years, to the game of basketball as a player, coach, administrator and broadcaster, Kerr received the 2009 John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

WASHINGTON -- Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas has died at the age of 73, team president David Montgomery said Monday.

Kalas, who also filled a voiceover role for NFL Films since 1975, was taken to a hospital Monday after passing out in the broadcast booth before Monday's game against the Washington Nationals.

The 73-year-old Kalas, known for his distinctive "Outta here!" call on home runs, was found by the Phillies director of broadcasting at about 12:30 p.m., Montgomery said.

Kalas joined the Phillies in 1971. Before that, he was an original member of the Houston Astros' broadcast team from 1965-70.

In 2002, he received the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for his contributions to the game.

Former big league pitcher Ed Blake dies in SwanseaHad a memorable career in minors

BY NORM SANDERS - News-Democrat
Former major league pitcher Ed Blake, who grew up in East St. Louis and played for the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Athletics, died Wednesday at Rosewood Care Center in Swansea after a long illness.
Blake was 83. He is survived by his close companion of 10 years, Belleville alderman Catherine Kreher, son Ed Blake Jr. and his wife Irene, and a daughter, Peggy Gleeson, of Houston, Texas. He also is survived by his sister, Maxine St. John, of Orlando, Fla., and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Carol Jean Blake, as well as his parents, Edward and Katherine Blake.

http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/belleville.news/breaking_news;c2=breaking_news;c3=breaking_news_ho mepage;%21category=breaking_news;template=article; pos=center6a;group=rectangle;sz=300x250;ord=%27+_k rdDartOrd+%27? Additional visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Belleville, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m.

The family asked that memorials be made toward the completion of Whitey Herzog Field in Belleville through the Belleville Parks and Recreation Department.
"He just had lost so much weight, but he hung in there and was a tough guy," Kreher said. "The past three weeks he went down really fast."
While he went on to pitch in 15 professional seasons, mostly in the high minor leagues, Blake got a special thrill as a teenager during the 1943 World Series in St. Louis.
"He always said the highlight of his baseball career was pitching batting practice in the 1943 World Series for the Cardinals when he was 17 years old and fresh out of high school," Kreher said. "He said that was truly the most memorable moment. He always took time to greet people and share a baseball story with them."
Blake was signed by the Cardinals in 1944 and compiled a 5-6 minor-league pitching record before entering the U.S. Army during World War II.
He served as an infantryman and was wounded in the Philippines, which kept him out of baseball until spring training in 1946.
After three straight losses with Columbus, he won 13 in a row and finished the season 16-8. It took him five more minor-league seasons until he reached the majors in 1951 with the Cincinnati Reds.
The Reds picked up Blake in a 1949 trade with the Cardinals for Mike Schultz.
In six major-league games during his career with the Reds and Kansas City Athletics from 1951-53 and in 1957, Blake was 0-0 with a 6.23 ERA. He pitched a total of eight innings.
"He always enjoyed talking about his time in baseball and very much enjoyed people who wanted to talk to him about it," said daughter Peggy Gleeson, who got to watch her father pitch in the minors. "There's still stacks of envelopes and letters and cards from people wanting autographs, they're everywhere. He really enjoyed that part of it."
Blake was 148-126 in 15 minor-league seasons, including 124 victories at the Class AAA level. One of his favorite minor-league stops was Toronto, where he picked up 66 victories from 1954-58.
In 2007, Blake and Kreher traveled to Canada and finished the trip in Toronto. They were surprised when their tour guide remembered Blake playing there in the minor leagues.
The guide returned to the hotel the next day with scrapbooks and clippings from Blake's career in the city.
"After that on our tour, Eddie was like an instant celebrity because other people didn't know he was a baseball guy," Kreher said. "That was just amazing. To see that people appreciated what he had done after all of those years was just amazing."
As a youngster, he was a teammate of former New York Yankees great Hank Bauer at Central Catholic High in East St. Louis.
After his playing career ended, Blake spent nearly 50 years in the plumbing business and was a past president of Plumbers Local 360.
Blake's son, Ed Blake Jr., also was a talented baseball player who spent three years in the minor leagues from 1970-73 after being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. He is a Belleville attorney with Blake & Allen, P.C.
His grandson, Edward "Jay" Blake III, is a junior pitcher at John Burroughs High in St. Louis. Following in his father and grandfather's footsteps, he is 2-0 this spring with a 1.00 ERA.

Former Detroit Lions great Terry Barr, a rookie on the franchise's last championship team in 1957, has died. He was 73.

The team says Barr died Thursday 28-May-09 after an extended illness.

Barr was a standout football and track athlete at Grand Rapids Central High School and a star running back and defensive back at the University of Michigan.

He was a third-round draft pick in 1957 and played defensive back for the Lions, returning an interception for a touchdown in the team's 59-14 NFL title game over the Cleveland Browns.

Barr later switched to receiver and made two Pro Bowl appearances, in 1963 and 1964. He played nine seasons with the Lions.

Billy "Benny" Felder, 84, Negro League Shortstop, 1925-2009

Former Newark Eagles and Indianapolis Clowns shortstop Billy "Benny" Felder died at his Tampa home Friday October 2, 2009 at the age of 84. Felder became the shortstop for the Eagles at the start of the 1946 season after the departure of future Hall of Famer Willie Wells to Baltimore. This allowed Felder to be the shortstop behind Leon Day's opening day no-hitter in 1946 against the Philadelphia Stars.

While Mariano Rivera is closing the door on games for the Yankees during the 2009 postseason, a tribute must be paid to the man who opened the door for Panamanians to play in Major League Baseball. Humberto Robinson was the first Panama native to play in the Major Leagues, making his debut with the Milwaukee Braves in 1955, posting a 3-1 record in 13 games that season. Robinson would pitch in the Majors again in 1956 and then from 1958-1960 with the Braves, Indians and Phillies.
