View Full Version : It's Rough Being a JETS Collector
Kaiser 10-14-2008, 10:55 AM Especially in the aspect of football cards. There really aren't any big name players that show any promise in the hobby. Sure, we picked up Vernon Gholston 6th, but he's turning out to be a bust. Favre's Jets cards will never be worth anything, atleast not as much as some of his Green Bay cards. Coles only has a few years left, and is playing uninspired football. I thought it would've been a good bet to go with Dustin Keller, but he's being under utilized this season, and hasn't really had a changes to show us what he can do. Leon Washington ended up backing up Thomas Jones, so he barely gets play time. Not only that, but TJ's cards are worth more as a Bear, as sad as that is. Anyway, just thought I'd rant and get some opinions on who to collect.
P.S - I'm thinking Brett Ratliff, he showed promise in the Pre-Season, and seems like he's going to be our next QB when Favre retires.
rchurchward 10-14-2008, 11:25 AM There's always guys like Chansi Stuckey, who showed promise early on in the season. Kellen Clemens is the heir apparent to Brett Favre once he is done. Another 1st rounder, D'Brickashaw has some nice cards out there.
hodee 10-14-2008, 12:47 PM So you only collect Jets players that show hobby promise? If you're going to be a Jets collector, be just that! Any and all things in a Jets uni! Curtis Martin is a HOFer in a few years, go nuts with him, or go vintage with some Namath or Maynard.....everybody wants their cards to go up in value with time, but being a Colts fan, I don't think my 30 or so Jerome Pathon jersey cards will ever be worth what I paid for them!
Greenbaumenom 10-14-2008, 06:12 PM Keller is cool, Leon has some nice stuff, and Namath and Maynard are always signing. But I will admit we do have a lack of nice cards and big time players. I'm still trying to get some favre stuff this year though.

dont count gholston as a bust, look at mario williams for example: not the strongest rookie year, but put up 14 sacks last year
Kaiser 10-14-2008, 07:00 PM Thanks for the inspiration guys. I'm going to keep at the collection regardless. As for the Hobby Promise comment. I think I came off wrong; what I meant was this. Alot of collectors have a big name on there team, who has some rare card they have the enjoyment of hunting down for any number of years. The Holy Grail of their teams collection if you will. The Jets collectors here don't have a card like that.
I was leaning towards Curtis Martin. Although he'll probably be knocked down to 5th All Time RB for yards by LT by the end of next year, or early the following.
I keep my hopes up for Gholston, but even Mario Williams didn't do as bad as him his rookie year. He's already been labeled the 2nd worst in the league for tackling lol.
bballer122333 10-14-2008, 07:17 PM ehh tell me about it kellen clemens has a future maybe u shoukd go with him
Enigma 10-14-2008, 07:18 PM Don't forget that Jerricho Cotchery is pushing to reach top tier status as a receiver. He'll probably put up better numbers than Moss this year and he's still young...

From what I saw from Clemens in the Pre-Season vs. what I saw in Brett Ratliff. I'm really hoping Mangini makes the right decision and goes with Ratliff as the QB of the future.
meloman315 10-14-2008, 07:46 PM i would do curtis martin, great guy and player and it would be easier to track down his stuff since its not being made...and 90's inserts are SWEET looking!

Exactly my point. But yeah, Namath is always a safe bet.
Greenbaumenom 10-15-2008, 01:36 AM Do some Vintage Titans stuff, I have bought some from the 61 set, very cool PSA stuff.
Kaiser 10-15-2008, 11:35 AM Can any of you guys give me a list of the top 10 Curtis Martin cards. I've tried Google, but it's not being helpful.

I would go after all of his 1995 RCs, Such as the Bowmans Best, Finest, Mirror Gold Refractor, Crown Royale card is nice. He has a few nice autos, Wayne Chrebet has some nice autos also.

mdskyhawks 10-15-2008, 04:08 PM If I ever get around to finding all my Curtis Martin Cards to scan (I have over 1,100 different but only 1/1 Shield, and 2 Autos and maybe another 20 Jersey cards) He is a very collectable player and he didn't sign every single card like every other player did so his autos will go up or at least maintain value.
Project 4 10-16-2008, 11:40 AM Do you have a favorite college team?
I collect Texans and didn't really have one single player I truly wanted to collect after David Carr left the team. :mmph:
I started collecting Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans for a little bit but something about collecting defensive players wasn't fun for me. I then went old school with the Houston Oilers and started collecting Eddie George. It got "old" fast. Matt Schaub was another story. Then I told myself what if all these players got traded to another team? I would certainly stop collecting them.
That's when I started collecting players from the same college I went to. Granted there hasn't been an elite player from my school yet (:pray:Please let Kevin Kolb be the next Tom Brady) I like that connection I have with the players plus it doesn't matter what uniform they wear in the pros.
Hope this might help with your collecting woes.
Kaiser 10-17-2008, 09:32 PM Actually it does help a bit, thanks! Although I have the dillemma of choosing between two colleges. UCF and UF. Obviously, there are no names to come out of UCF other than Keven Smith. I have a lot of options from here at UF. Thanks for the advice :D
