ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Former league MVP Shaun Alexander signed with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, part of a flurry of roster activity in which the team ditched its punter, shuffled its safeties and displayed coach Jim Zorn's strong ties to his Seattle Seahawks roots.

Alexander, unemployed since being cut by the Seahawks in April, signed a one-year deal to back up NFL leading rusher Clinton Portis. Portis' usual backup, Ladell Betts, sprained his knee in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams and is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks.

I was surpised he was unsigned for this long. He probaly won't get much playing time in D.C.

I'm surprised he sat out there this long, but I'm even more surprised it was the Redskins who signed him. He wanted too much money for a backup, so I'm surprised a team with as solid a RB situation as the 'Skins picked him up. I was expecting somebody like the Texans.

I'm pretty happy. He'll be good but I still think Portis is the main guy.

I'll be interested to see if he's in as good a shape as he says he is.

Great move by the Redskins. This will keep Portis fresh. Call me crazy, but do you guys think Portis is playing at an MVP level? The dude has been on a tear in recent weeks. My boy haze must be loving it, and hating it since now people are probably jumping on the bandwagon lol

Portis is most definately still the main guy. With Alexander you have a reasonable solid back up, that can switch in to give portis a rest. That way Portis hopefully won't be over taxed in the next 2-4 weeks with the regular back up out, and the 'skins ensure sustained production from him. All being well anyway!
