I saw a thread like this one on another site and figured it would be cool to hear the stories of fellow scf members as well. Feel free to share your story of either the nicest or rudest players that you have ever met or dealt with; im sure everyone has something to say!

For me the nicest player I've ever met would have to be Earl Lloyd. I know he's not a football player but he's still the nicest guy. (for those of you unfamiliar, earl lloyd was the first african american to play in the NBA) he lives in the same town as my uncle these days and a few years back I was visiting for the summer. One of my uncle's friends golfs with Lloyd so he called him up to see if he would spend some time with me (because i was the biggest sports nut he'd ever met.) Turns out that Mr. Lloyd did spend some time with us; he ended up going with us to lunch at an old school drugstore/soda bar they had in town. (the man has exquisite taste, a thick chocolate shake and a good cheeseburger.

I can't really think of a rude player I've ever had to deal with.

So enough with me, let's hear some of your stories!

The WCW, i know it not football but the only rude famous person I met was the Junk Yard Dog. We went outside after the matches at the Citadel and went to the wrestlers locker room and waited to meet the wrestlers when they were leaving and my little brother who was 10 at the time I was 17 he asked JYD for a autograph he refused to sign and I said why not? He got in my face and started yelling and spitting some few choice words for me like "I aint got no time for this **** and to leave me the **** alone" and then security pulled him away from me.

My brother left crying pretty scarey stuff.

btw I thought he was going to hit me.

wow that sucks big time man! Glad you got out of that in one piece (yeah ur stories dont need to be about football players just athletes in general, i just picked football chat for the forum)

If I were you, I would've made sure he hit me just not to the point where he did major damage. You'd have his wallet for sure.

I have a few

for nicest i'd say Sean Casey or Joe Nathan

Sean Casey never says no to an autograph, and is called "the mayor" because he is so friendly and can get along with just about anyone.

Joe Nathan signed at a game when the twins were at commerica park against the Tigers and Nathan must've signed for 20-30 minutes until there was no one else who wanted his autograph, yes he signed for EVERYONE, and took pictures with anyone who asked for one.

now for meanest
Huston Street by far, the guy is an @$$. i asked him to sign during batting practice in 07 and he was standing literally right behind me, maybe 1 foot away, and said he was to busy and had to go pratice, and said he'd come back, yea he never came back!

and for the record, Rasheed Wallace is NOT a bad guy, my brother interned for the Detroit Pistons this summer and was suppose to "hide" Rasheed during the press confrence when Curry was named the new head coach, my brother is 5'9 175 pounds so obviously it didnt go well, towards the end of the press confrence, the press found him and started to ask questions and my brother says "Rasheed has no comment" but they kept asking so Rasheed says to my brother "Jeremy, i got this" then to the media "I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY AND HAVE NO COMMENT PERIOD!!"

and before the press confrence, Rasheed was extremely nice to my brother, he introduced his wife to my brother and was very nice and down to earth, pretty much he justs doesnt like the media..lol

the nicest would have to be Drew Brees and seconded by Deuce Mcallister they are just great down to earth guys.
the rudest would have to be Marcus Camby I met him when he was in college playing against louisville. I went up to talk to him and he told me to get the hell away from him.
second rudest i hate to say it was Johnny Unitas I met him at his last golden arm award he was given to David Carr (another very nice guy). He was just a grumpy old man LOL

I went to the NY Jets training camp a couple years ago

Nicest: Kevin Mawae, he signed everybody's stuff, and he was just an awesome guy, i sat and talked to him a little bit after he finished signing it was cool.
Rudest: I would say Ty Law, but he wasnt as rude as Johnathan Vilma, OMG this guy would not sign anyones stuff, literally everybody there wanted him to sign something and he wouldnt he would just walk away. BIG JERK

Welp thats my two cents, ill be on my way

your two cents are much appreciated! (as an o lineman myself, im glad to hear how nice mawae is)

darn big headed linebackers, my high school team is the same way. (BOO VILMA)

Shoot, can't remember his name, but he was a former Cowboys CB when Campo was the coach. Went down to the summer training stuff in Wichita Falls and must've signed for us at least 3 times. He was doing the traditional signing. Then he drove by on his golf cart and signed again. Then as they were heading for the locker room he signed again. LOL. On the news a couple of months later he was caught for DUI and that was the end of me rooting for him.

Meanest was definately Emmitt. He signed for 3 people at the entire camp. I was right next to him and he blew me off and signed for a woman with a big poster that looked liked it was headed straight for eBay, and a couple of kids.

Nicest football pllayer I met and the only one was plaxico burress I saw him at a knicks game and he signed two notecard one for me and one for my friend who was a huge giants fan.

I would have to say some of the nicest guys I have met were: Brett Basanez, David Carr, John Fox

real down to earth family guys that will take time to talk to you. David Carr and Brett Basanez would stay an hour after training camp practices to just talk and sign for fans. They were usually there until every fan that wanted something signed, got it.

I haven't really met players that have gone out of their way to be rude, but quite a few that aren't interested in interacting with the fans (chris harris, julius peppers, deangelo williams)

I went to a T-Wolves game against the Nuggets and had a Melo jersey...He walked 10 feet past me turned around and then came right to me signed the jersey, and walked on the bus, there was about 50 people waiting.

What the Magic were in town waiting for the bus Superman Dwight Howard was the last to walk out someone didn't have a marker so I let them borrow my sharpie, he was told to hurry up but he made sure he got to me and took a picture with me since I let him use my sharpie, picture got deleted when my computer crashed though:(

The nicest guys I ever met are Bobby Nystrom (Islanders) and Walt Frazier (NY Knicks). These two classy guys take the time to sign and talk to people. The rudest I met were Lawrence Taylor ( A hero of mine in the 80's ) and Charlie Ward ( I am a big Seminoles fan ). I paid to have Taylor sign a ball for me at a show. I was so excited to meet him, until it was my turn. I told him he was my idol and the reason I played DE/LB in high school football. I extended my hand out to shake his hand and he just looked at me, signed my ball and pushed it aside. Charlie Ward was at a Grand Opening for a Wiz store and wouldn't even acknowledge me when I said hello. He didn't even make eye contact. He wanted to sign and just get out of there. I have met a lot of real super players in the past, but Taylor really dissappointed me.

I forgot this one. I was sitting at home and my mom was at peurto rico in the spring. She calls me to tell me she met Jonathen Vilma(before he was traded to the saints) at a bar and she got an autographb and i was very excited and then she asked if i wanted to talk to him and i said sure. I couple of seconds later she hands the phone to vilma and we had a pretty long conversation. He seemed like a very nice guy.

10-25-2008, 07:26 PM
wow, in this thread we have had two conflicting opinions of the one and only johnathan vilma. I could imagine two people posting stories about the same player, but I cant say I saw two stories about vilma coming, let alone completely different ones hahahahaha.

The nicest football players I have met were Derrick Thomas and Tony Dorsett. They both took time out to talk to fans, especially kids. They really seemed to make sure that every fan who payed for an autograph got their money's worth out of it. I have also met Franco Harris and Ray Nitschke (sp?). They were also really nice. Harris had quite a line and wasn't "allowed" to have much time with each fan thanks to the promoter. Nitschke was nice too. Was amazed that a young person knew who he was. Meeting DT was a dream come true, as he was my favorite player and I really looked up to him. That is something I will remember and always treasure. I don't think I have ever met an athelete that was rude. Maybe I'm just lucky? :confused0024:

Well, I wasnt the nicest player. I was never CHEAP in any way. But I wasn't pleasant to deal with in any sports (football, basketball, soccer). I really wish I was more like Colt McCoy (not trying to be a "homer" in any way but he really is a class act).

But the worst I played aginst was a guy one year younger than me from our rival school. His team got in a fight with Hamilton High because this particular guy called someone the "N word", and then the next week got in a fight with our school after a basketball game, he started both fights. He had a reputation of running his mouth and crossing the line (not just trash talk). Very good basketball player though, for sure.

I can name many players that earned my respect as great sportsman. But I guess the best would be Colt McCoy. In high school we had to play against him and he was a great guy, even though we lost 56-6. Great guy all-around.

Ok, I'm sorry. I misunderstood what we were talking about here.

The nicest was Jason Kidd. He signed numerous things for me at his basketball camp. And was all for pictures and such.
Also Mike Bibby and Michael Dickerson. My mom was trying to take a pic with me and Bibby and her camera messed up so Bibby and Dickerson were trying anything they could to help her work it out. That was the best part of it, how nice and caring they were.

I've really never had a bad story with a pro player. ( I know this wasnt football, my bad)

Met Amhad Rashad on the sidelines before a Lions Thanksgiving day game, he was hanging before going to the booth. Every other word out of his mouth was F***, SH**, D***, T*ts, @$$, when talking about the college marching band dance team on the sideline.

He gave me a piece of gum, and I asked him how he can possibly go on tv and not swear..... He said, he gets it out at pregame!

Met OJ same game. He had on the shoes.... and smelled like bad cologne from 25 yards away.

My personal story took place many moons ago...The skins, before snyder bought them, held their training camp at Frostburg State U in western maryland, and this happened in 95 preseason...the rudest by far was Heath Shuler...go figure. Anyway, the nicest guy was during a scrimage against the steelers. I showed up in full pittsburgh gear and it was hot out, a good 90-95 degrees for the evening practice. was an inter squad practice prior to a scrimmage the next day and i figured i could score a steeler auto or two. well, practice was over and the players were heading up to the fieldhouse to do their thing and then go grab some chow, lot of the high price players were riding golf carts and ignoring fans (shuler, westbrooke) and up the walkway already with his pad, helmet and shirt off was greg lloyd. those of ya that are too young to remember him, the guy was a beast, looked like someone chiseled him out of granite and he always had one look on his face, mean as hell and ready to kill. as he was walking by, he saw me in full steelers gear, surrounded by skins fans, stopped, pulled out a sharpie and signed my ball and proceeded to say that i must have a pair of titanium ones to be standin in that kind of crowd....i just kinda stood there dumbfounded, he smiled and trotted off. Matt Turk was an awesome guy that signed as well, was always asking where the good fishing spots were in the area.

Met AJ Hawk when he was Christmas shopping his senior year at Best Buy. He was a really nice guy. He was with his wife, Brady Quinn's sister. I asked him to knock Brady's head off for me, he laughed and said he would, while Brady quinn's sister didnt find it funny.

Also met Michael Redd last year at a restaurant. He walked out the same time as my wife and I, and was very nice about signing a auto and taking a picture.

As far as rude people go: Dion Sanders. Acted like he was to good to sign for anyone at a Columbus Clippers game when he was playing baseball.

Santonio Holmes was a big jerk to my friend and his sister. Refused to sign A auto, and it was her birthday.

Probably the nicest athlete I have ever met was Brandon Phillips of the Cincinnati Reds. He was already the first Reds player out to warm up and the last one done. That's because most of the time he wanted to get ready quick so he could sign autographs. He would stand along the first base line and talk with the fans and sign autographs while everyone else was stretching. It's just great to see such down to earth super stars. He's really a guy who struggled at first in his MLB career and I think now he's just happy to be succeeding and wants to give back to his supporters. He's just happy to be playing the game and gives so much back.

I've also heard good things about Chad Johnson. Even though he's a huge personality, he does a lot for the city of Cincinnati. He does tons of charity events and is a big time fan favorite because of his out going and very personable personality.

Hmm...here's who I've met that are nice people:
Jim Brown
Franco Harris
CC Sabathia
Coco Crisp
Damon Jones

Victor Martinez is the only one that could be considered "mean." He wasn't rude to me, but he was rude to my Dad, who was getting an autograph because my brother was sick and couldn't make it.

While I haven't met him, LeBron James seemed like a nice guy when I was in the Cavaliers Locker Room before Game 1 of the Cavs-Wiz Playoff game. He seemed a little arrogant, but when you have that much talent, why not be?

After the end of the season the Saints drafted Colston, he was doing a signing at a show in Harrisburg, where he played high school football. He was scheduled for a two hour signing session, but the crowd was HUGE! He ended up staying for 2.5 hours PAST the original 2 he was scheduled for. Each and every person who came out for an autograph he addressed and if they wanted, he let them get their picture taken on the same side of the table as him or would stand up next to them.

When I went up, I had a helmet and a Colston jersey to sign. I asked him to personalize the helemt with " To Jay..Who Dat?! ". As soon as I asked him to sign it that way he said "AH a TRUE Saints fan in Pennsylvania!". I am sure most of those there were there just because he was a local guy who made it, but knowing I was a Saints fan, he spent a few minutes talking to me about the NFC title game with the Bears that they lost. He shook my hand and told me he expected to see me the next time he was through this way and doing a signing.

I've met a lot of celebs, but he truly was a class act and a stand up guy.

I've was fortunate when I lived in NH to attend several charity golf events and I went to every Bruins carnival every year. I never met a hockey player who was bad, but Joe Mullen who played for the Bruins at the end of his carrer got into it with a parent that brought their young son to see the Bruins at training camp. He signed for the kid then told his dad that the kid should be in school, not getting autographs and the dad actually argued with him...it was very funny!

The best I ever met was Bobby Orr...he signed a poster for me at one of the Bruins carnivals and talked to me for 5 minutes about UNH hockey. I saw him several months later and he asked me if I had been to any UNH games, I asked him how he knew I liked UNH and he told me he remembered me!

I was at a charity golf event and got tons of autographs...everyone was awesome except for Roger Clemens...he stayed as far away from the people as he could get, even walked through the woods to avoid signing. I expected this though as several years earlier we attended a Red Sox game and as we were walking by the players parking lot he pulled out, when the fans started yelling his name he gave the crowd the finger and drove away.

I've meet numerous nice players, there's too many to list, so I'll tell you about the WORST. I went to the Mario Lemieux golf tournament about 4 years ago, when it was still open to the public. I'm not much of a basketball fan, but I had an early 90's card for Charles Barkley to sign. He finished the 7th hole and was walking towards the 8th hole when a bunch of people asked him to sign. He started signing some basketballs when I stuck my hand out with my card for him to sign. He had a bodyguard (why, I have NO idea) who looked in my direction and said, "No pictures". I thought someone behind me was trying to take his picture on a camera, so I kept my card out. His bodyguard said the same thing again, this time he looked directly at me. He then said, "He doesn't sign pictures of himself". OK, that seemed weird to me, so I grabbed a golf ball for him to sign since most players will sign those. So I asked Barkley to sign my golf ball and he said, "NO". This really iritated me, so I said, "Then what the hell do you sign besides basketballs?" WOW, that really struck a nerve with him because he turned around and was coming at me when his bodyguard grabbed his arm and pulled him away.

To this day, I want to spit on the TV whenever I see him on there!!!

When I was like 7 I met Tim Couch, back when he was still popular in Cleveland and was considered to be the future. He was a nice guy, I was wearing one of his jerseys, and he told me that he liked my jersey and that it looked good, and we had him sign a Browns flag. Thats the only player I have met, but I did get close to some of the Browns players at the training camps the past few years. I remember seeing Travis Wilson his Rookie year at one of the training camps, and he was kinda rude to some people it seemed like, he just acted like he didn't want to be signing at all. All the other players I have seen at the Browns training camps seem to be cool and cracking jokes with the fans.

Both were cool and very nice, I got a pic with Glenn and two signed starter action figures in boxs! and a Basketball signed by Horace.
