View Full Version : - 08/09 UD Masterpieces Sketches -
Verblood 12-01-2008, 02:15 PM g'day to you all!
In my recent collecting adventures, I have decided to embark on a mission to find any information in regards to the 08/09 UD Masterpieces Sketch 1/1 cards that are seemingly impossible to find.
I know there was a post here a few weeks back of the Bobby Orr 1/1 (a beauty i must admit, and probably one of the highest valued ones), and there was an Esposito card I saw from Googling for a billion hours and stumbling on the artists site responsible for it - but besides those, I cannot for the life of me find any info out there - ebay, websearching, forums, anything!
Have any of you stumbled on any? Seen any? Own any? Read anything? Heard anything? Anything anything?!
I'm not looking for pricing only, or trading, or anything along those lines exclusively - I'd like to tap into this mythical 1/1 collection research adventure with your (plural) help if possible. It seems it's quite the ghost collection with little to no leaks or revelations or information to the outside world.
the Masterpieces set really is one of the aesthetically nicest in my opinion and having the chance to own a sketch or 1/1 of any of those all-time-greats is a collectors/fans dream!
Any/every input would be greatly appreciated - please...
scottkoz20 12-01-2008, 02:18 PM The only one that I saw was the Orr. I have not seen any other sketches at this point
Inferno 12-01-2008, 02:27 PM First of all, welcome to SCF!
Unfortunately I don't any information about those for you, but we have a knowledgeable member base I'm sure someone can help you out!
Verblood 12-01-2008, 02:50 PM Scott', Inferno - Thanks for the replies!
I admire the depth offered in these forum links - from the information to the trading/marketplace, it's a refreshing thing to see quality when so many other sites try and flash out quickly.
I saw the (over $100 forum) thread with the Orr card, and am also adding this link for anyone to visit as well - it's from the actual artist responsible for a bunch of the sketches and cards in the collection:
Tattooed-sky dot blogspot dot com is the site that (I sadly can't link to due to my low post count :( but figured i'd share it somehow) shows a great depiction of some of them from him. It's in the 2008/October area and offers some nice sketches to view. I'm not sure if they all made the cutting floor but at least 2 of them did I think?
Bruce Gerlach is the artist, and if I may say there are some nice looking cards!
(please) Let's keep the posts coming folks, it's a fancy looking set and a unique one that offers a quality card for young and old fans of the game - from the grandfathers to the kids of the kids...
ps - I will update the link above once my count goes up to share with others that may potentially be interested...
cheers!
Laffifan 12-02-2008, 07:47 PM i saw the P. Roy one on Ebay couple months ago never saw the ending bid. havent seen any others since.
comatoad 12-03-2008, 03:41 PM According to the Upper Deck website checklist, SK1 thorugh SK60, 1 of 1 are "TBD."
comatoad 12-03-2008, 04:02 PM www.tattooed-sky.blogspot.com is the website referenced earlier.
http://www.scoundrelpublishing.com/spart/viewtopic.php?t=8893&sid=bb55cdf58e1c4530db55054731f62109 -- also references Gerlach as artist and possibly Rich Molinelli
Verblood 12-03-2008, 05:06 PM comatoad, thanks for posting the links!
i had them ready to post/share, but was waiting until my post-count climbs to the normal level of being able to function on this forum.
I noticed the Esposito Sketch card did not have it's reserve met (barely cracked $100 and I personally don't blame the seller either) and am trying to see if it was sold offline or for a higher rate later on.
With that one, I have images of the Orr, Gretzky, Esposito, and (not all made it, so I'm not sure which were official) the ones from the Gerlach tatooed-sky link above.
The Gretzky is painted on, or at least seems to have the most colour of them all thus far - the Orr one is the classiest in my opinion with the half-face and B-Wheel background. You can actually see the pencil lines below the sharpie or whatever black marker was used on it! (cool)
Props' to all that have helped so far - keep the information coming!!!
Verblood 12-09-2008, 12:54 AM UPDATE!
Found two more (ebay) -
item number: 160303597592 - Gordie Howe! "09 Masterpieces Sketch Howe" is how i found it.
20646
and the second:
Item Number: 400015098410 - Gretzky 09 Masterpieces Sketch
20647
I cannot express how thrilled I am that some more have popped up in my quest to find them, although now I find it interesting that there have been two legit findings of the Wayne Gretzky one (this one above, and one a month back with a colourful card instead of b&w)
cheers!
Verblood 12-11-2008, 12:27 PM now i'm confused.
i search every day on all the quality based sites/forums/marketplaces for any new Bobby Orr autographs, or for the sake of this thread - a sketch card - but have now seen a second Orr Masterpieces Artist Sketch 1/1 pop up.
20729
question out there for you all - (i've tried to contact UD and hope they'll respond soon) is - how many sketches of each guy do you think exist?!
It's gone from 1/1, and only 1 of the player to 1/1 and a few of 1 guy?
The prices are shooting up superfast too, last I saw the Gretzky card from my previous post it was over 300?! (wow)
Any input would be great, thanks fella's...
wolf1bh 12-11-2008, 12:31 PM interesting posts. i didnt even know about the sketch cards but those masterpiece cards are beauts.
Verblood 12-17-2008, 01:36 PM Update from the previous 3 cards mentioned:
The Gretzky sold for over $400,
The Howe went unsold as the "Best Offer" options weren't high enough (Buy it now had it for almost $800 i believe?)
The 2nd Bobby Orr (not the one posted on our forums in the +100 area a few weeks/months ago) sold yesterday...
Those three were on ebay at the same time, and if i'm not mistaken two of them were from the same seller/cardshop (wow for him that he'd pull or acquire two somehow?!) and were the biggest blip on the radar screen thus far that i've seen in terms of publicity or being "out there".
I can't find anything online currently to add to the list, and am (still) amazed as to how limited/rare it is to hear, let alone see these 1/1's...
Anyone else heard anything locally or seen any?
Verblood 01-04-2009, 02:37 PM well.
happy new year to one and all, i've been gone from the internet world for a few days now; and as i do every morning (and night) i checked up on the various sites out there for any Masterpieces Legends Artist Sketch 1/1's that could have shown up and (unfortunately for the sake of finding a fresh one, nada) found the Howe one up on ebay. looks intent on finding a buyer in the $700+ range it seems, or at least close enough with a Make-an-Offer to his liking.
how i wish i could see/find some more! they are driving me bonkers in their exclusivity and general elusive, hard-to-find status...
if anyone here has seen or heard of any - (online or real life) please share the info, many thanks in advance...
we'll see how the Howe one does!

wow i didnt know about those but i definitely would have thought both the gretzky and orr would have went for more. i would have gone $250-300 on the orr had i known
Verblood 01-15-2009, 01:42 PM (potentially) mini-update.
i am currently hoping the trade winds, and postal service, and weather, and murphy's law do not tangle it up for me - but I might have a wonderful post to share with you in the next few days regarding some of the sketch cards!
sorry for the tease, but it's by far the coolest/amazing find i have come across and potentially may be able to call my own soon!
unrelated to my collection sidenote: the Howe card has been recently added yet again at the $700+ price BIN/MAO on ebay. that's quite a steep price and a tough one to just swing i bet, one of those that you hope someone bites? (shrug)
MatsSundin13Rocks 01-15-2009, 08:11 PM Reason why there might be more than one of each player is because I believe there is 1 for each of the 87 cards in the base set.
Verblood 01-18-2009, 09:19 PM I DID IT!
I did a ton of research.
I contacted auction sellers,
I contacted auction buyers,
I tried contacting the artists, bloggers, hobby-shops, and (soon) UD itself...
I scoured the internet for hours (and hours, and hours, and hours, and no joke - more hours...)
and can proudly share with you the crown jewel(s) of my collection.
(drumroll please)

Ladies and Gentlemen of SCF.
My happiest moment in collecting cards in my lifetime thus far...
I am now a proud owner of two of the coolest, most unique (in my opinion) Bobby Orr 1/1 cards that I've ever seen, heard of, or could think of.
I know there are some ridiculous Orr cards out there (the 1/1 "Property Of" card must be ridiculous but I've never seen it), and many that have surfaced in the collecting world gracing good ol'bobby on them...
but these two are absolutely positively super unique and "special" and look awesome in person. I had no idea that Bruce Gerlach did a right, and left side of the face and logo - a cool, classy, and vibrant representation of Bobby. You can see the pencil smudges, you can see the marker-whiskers that that are covering the sketch, you can really get a nice "feel" for the artwork on them.
So.
Here you have it - I'm sharing the image with you - my hockey community that I'm learning from every day, and am doing my part to add a unique and interesting subset into the forefront in case anyone else hears of them, see's them, or owns any. Not bragging in any way, just sharing - as a rookie, as a young-gun in here I feel it's only right to share with the people that enjoy and care for fun/unique experiences such as this one.
enjoy!
(ps - more updates to come as I find them. I'm pleased with my progress so far, but am now ready to focus on finding a Bossy and O'ree sketch somehow, someway!)
gregmal05 01-18-2009, 09:28 PM thats absolutely awesome. congrats
MatsSundin13Rocks 01-18-2009, 09:30 PM Those sketches you have look amazing!!! Congrats on tracking them down and getting them!
I wonder why more haven't surfaced on ebay though?
Would have thought that most would pop up on ebay unless actual collectors are pulling them.
Verblood 01-18-2009, 09:43 PM thanks guys, it means alot :)
As for the ebay thing - I totally agree, and it blows my mind why more have not shown up.
Especially with how long the set has been out, you would/should have seen more by now, no?! It's been maybe 6 or so that have shown up?
No more than 10 TOTAL that I've seen myself or heard of from others?
(thats nuts on how hushhush/quiet/private/selective they've been so far)
The Howe one is still up on ebay - around $799 still I believe, and I check ebay almost on the hour from my iPhone or internet when I get a chance.
Spelling variations, different descriptions, etc - nada. zip-zero.
Hopefully more surface - It's a beautiful set, and an incredible type of collectors item.
mikpaq77 01-19-2009, 01:31 AM Wow!!!!!
PsychoPig 01-19-2009, 01:58 AM Very nice!
Is this Orr one of them?

TeamChevelle 01-19-2009, 02:07 AM I love it, I am working on the brown base and the autos and find myself searching the Bay hourly as well. Good luck in your search and I will keep my eyes peeled as well.

is a picture of the card for those that don't want to click-over.
i find it interesting, that an overwhelming majority that have popped up have been cards of only a few players - a bunch of orr's, a howe, 2 gretzky's, a roy (haven't seen but heard of), and the esposito.
and to further complicate matters - the serial #'s & card numbers for some of the orr's I have are identical! why would UD do that?
i'd love to get more insight from them - it's quite a white whale for finding info of...
thanks guys

Those look awesome.
Thanks for sharing and keep them coming

Verblood 01-19-2009, 03:26 PM http://www.mankindram.com/NHL.html
from the Molinelli sketch collection.
Thanks for the auction earlier PsychoPig, it led me to research more and I got to this link which led me to this image.... (in case you don't want or can't click the link above)
21844
(note, if image is too large, i'll gladly resize - i don't want to abuse the image size parameters in any way!)
Which leads me yet again - to the vast number of cards that I feel is greater than what we think, or is only a select number of these that made it to the cutting floor for release.
This is the first showing of any Messier, Mario, (Bourque?), and other notables that we haven't seen yet on ebay, beckett, or other trading sites out there.
hmm.
the sketch-card plot thickens
TeamChevelle 01-19-2009, 04:17 PM Is it possible they just have not been pulled yet?? It seems to me very little of this product has been cracked, at least here in central Alberta. The cost seems high for what you get and it scared people away.
Verblood 01-20-2009, 08:06 PM After the Bobby Orr popped up yesterday - a Mario popped up today.
It's one of the yellow color (or colour) ones that are pictured on the Molinelli image in one of the replies above. The card was selling for peanuts with the first few bids, dollar something, 2, 3 dollars and change, and as of a few minutes ago it was "relisted" and sold at a buy-it-now of $150.
That my dear friends, is a deal and a half for whoever was quick enough/smart enough to propose it to the seller - if you're on these forums - i applaud your move - well played!

Here is a small scan of the card for those interested.
(and finally, finally! a new face/name to see moved out there on the market)
till next time, i'm keeping my eyes/ears open for more...
cheers
MatsSundin13Rocks 01-20-2009, 09:31 PM The Orr on ebay is only going for $5 right now! That is quite low!
Verblood 01-20-2009, 11:02 PM agreed...
(i'm obviously not going to do it, but...) i almost feel bad for the seller as he spelled it with Master Piece instead of "masterpieces" with 0 ud, or upper deck thrown in there (let alone a 1/1 to spike up potential interest)
i'm sure it'll climb in the next 24hrs - anything with "bobby orr" on it on eBay usually gets the turbocharged pricetag when it comes down to the closing hours/minutes/seconds, no?
doniceage 01-21-2009, 06:25 AM Thanks for sharing and by the time your done you should be expert on the UD Masterpieces.
DON
Verblood 01-21-2009, 11:49 AM due to the fact that i'm pressed for time, I cannot upload the scan that I'd prefer to share with you (instead of the one on the auction itself that gives it little justice) but will pass on the fact that I found a Bernie Parent sketch auction early this morning..
item 260350203893, and it seems to be of the watercolored variation - (nice use of color!)
thanks again for your help, and thanks for reading along,
cheers

Did I see that right? Bidding closed at $5?!?! I thought that even this thread alone would send some traffic over there... :frusty:

Nono, the seller closed the sale at $5.00 with time left in the auction and then relisted as a BIN and it went almost instantly for $150 or around there

I just came across it as I was surfing for Masterpieces, that is a really nice card
Verblood 01-24-2009, 01:43 PM Well...
It's been an interesting few days, the Bernie Parent card sold for around 150, and the auction was quite lively... I noticed that participation on it shot up considerably once the Bobby Orr AND Mario cards went off-list and sold privately.
The Bobby Orr ended up disappearing (and I in no way hold anything negative against anyone that may have been bidding or ended up sniping the card up from under my hopeful bids at the final minute of auction), and i'd be curious - wholeheartedly so- on what the final price the seller got. (If you are on this forum, or bought it - I'd encourage you to PM me or post the $ if possible?)
The Mario card also ended up closing sooner than the bid window, and honestly - without a doubt - the seller took the money and run... but he would have made so much more had he let the auction continue. I'd argue that it'd be hundreds more. sidenote - My best friend lives - breathes, and dies for mario memorabilia, has that white helmet autographed, and wanted to add this watercolour card to the display case... his bids were ready for the 300-400 range. ...the auction got bagged for a 150 price. (...)
and so another small chapter of UD Masterpieces Legends Sketch cards closes, i'm sure a new one will open soon enough - it almost seemed as if with the more this discussion picked up, the more cards popped up online.. (hmm, awesome if so!)
thank you, again - to one and all that check up on them, that keep interest in this set, and for any further information that you may hear/see!
cheers

Is this the one that was supposed to end last week? If so I had placed a bid up to $25 on it, then when I went back to check, it had been removed. Guess my top bid wouldn't have been enough anyway I only had $125 to play with.
Verblood 01-27-2009, 01:20 PM yup,
it's the bobby orr (horizontal format in b/w), and it was pulled last week...
i'd love to find out where, what, when and how with it!
we'll see...
more details trickle out weekly, perhaps we'll have another clue pop up soon.
TeamChevelle 01-30-2009, 12:32 PM Here is the latest............I like this one.

Verblood 02-03-2009, 04:07 PM Interesting.
A few thoughts, and links to view/consider:
Two new sketch cards have popped up,
1. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=390027489117 (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=3&campid=5335896190&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI.dl l%3FViewItem%26ssPageName%3DSTRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT%26it em%3D390027489117)

(item 400028487192)
--- ---
interesting: both cards are by comic artist Dan Panosian. it's a curious thing that not just one but TWO of the same artist (let alone "new" and unseen as of yet) have popped up in a relatively same time-frame.
the same happened with the Gerlach's, and the Molinelli's a few weeks back... (scratching my head.. hmmmmmmm, interesting...)
___ ___ ___
The other "interesting" find is that this is now the 3rd (or 4th?! unconfirmed as of posting this) sketch card the little_italian has put up. I don't know how many boxes he has opened, or how much he's spent, or where he got them - but that... is, nuts. He has singlehandedly revealed the most via ebay thus far, and the most variety. The artists themselves (Gerlach and molinelli) have posted their cards up as a sheet on their respective websites, but there's a whole bunch of others that have surfaced and little_italian has the most to this date on ebay.
Not that it majorly matters, but he has not returned any messages inquiring about where/how/what - and no, i wasn't trying to sabotage, i was just wondering what his method(s) were. Casebreaks, trades, or the mention that he recently purchased a collection of mid range to high end cards for his collection/aution.*
(*ps - i can't stand when sellers mistakes in descriptions or common/basic terms on their products offered. anyways, i digress...)
So, there you have it for now - I know one of the Howe's was mentioned above my post - I was away for a few days and did not get a chance to update the images or descriptions to share with you but have been tracking them on my phone in the meantime.
And a final note, I honestly hope that there are non Howe/Gretzky/Mario/Orr/popular guys like that in the Sketch collection... (interesting) the types of cards popping up is reflecting a strange ratio of "uber"stars or potentially guys that the artists chose to cover - instead of UD/Masterpieces equally splitting the set members. (will there be a Lafleur? will there be a Foster Hewitt? they have them in the set - will they also honor them via sketch?) or is it turning into a 25 Orr's, 25 Howe's and Gretzky's, etc type of deal. (hope not)
I'm hoping and praying an O'Ree or Bossy card pops up somehow someway!
Very Interesting...
Thanks for reading along, keep the updates comin' fellas.
cheers
TeamChevelle 02-03-2009, 09:13 PM Alright, hands up, who scooped the Howe? :)
Verblood 02-03-2009, 11:42 PM Alright, hands up, who scooped the Howe? :)

wish i knew.
(and i wonder how much it went for)
at least tell me it's someone on these forums?!
anyone...
anyone...

Verblood 02-04-2009, 12:36 PM another panosian (3 in the past week now with 0 by any other artist),
another one by little_italian (2 in the past week).
another Howe (3 in the past week)
...
is that a weird coincidence or is it just me?!
dude has these sketches locked up on ebay for a while now, not to mention the Howe he took off a few days ago and privately sold mid-auction...
and another interesting thing - take a closer look at the orientation of the card/image - notice that this card was painted upside down!

TeamChevelle 02-04-2009, 03:54 PM Coincidence..........not likely. I would love to know whats going on here.
gregmal05 02-04-2009, 04:50 PM Coincidence..........not likely. I would love to know whats going on here.
Yea it seems odd. I know this is unlikely, but what are the chances some of these may be counterfeits? Due to the fact nobody really seems to know anything about them, plus there is no checklist, or known number of cards in existence, it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. Plus the fact that there are multiple cards coming from the same people after nobody had any for months?
Verblood 02-04-2009, 06:45 PM personally i don't think they are fakes, although the coincidence(s) really bug me with how they've been brought to the open...
first a bunch of gerlachs,
next a bunch of molinelli's,
then a bunch of panosians...
quite a few from a certain seller,
quite a few in similar time frames (within a few days of each other),
after months of ...nada...
i swear, (comically reacting) that i sit and scratch my head and think that it's a big joke that the internet world is playing on my indiana jones'ian search of these (personal) "holy" 1/1 grails; part of a big davincian code conspiracy of the ultimate players captured on cardboard!
i feel like i need to travel to the hockey hall of fame (or um, Upper Deck) with a handheld blacklight and i'll reveal a world of clues and answers. or maybe if i align my two Orr sketches in the sunlight on his birthday then an answer or a map may be revealed?
hmmmmmm...
flemingc04 02-06-2009, 01:27 AM Looks like this Howe 1/1 sketch is ending in under an hour. Thought I'd give you a heads up if you want your hands on it.:winking0071:

TeamChevelle 02-06-2009, 02:27 AM $147.50, nice to see one make it to the end of the auction. Anyone know who won?
Pheebs888 02-06-2009, 04:37 AM This is quite a nice thread guys, keep up the good work!
Made me want to write about it: http://www.sportscardforum.com/articles/?p=523
Verblood 02-07-2009, 10:11 PM small update.
the 2nd Howe (upside down one featured above/previous page) in blue with the comic-book likeness of his face (or attempt to capture his likeness via comicbook features?) has been sold mid auction by our masterpieces sketches favorite little_italian.
for how much?
(i have 0 clue)
to whom?
(clueless)
did i get a chance to bid on it?
(nope)
did i want to?
(yup, and it would've been a juicy juicy juicy offer... fact!)
does this mean i'm going to stop searching near and far, high and low, in person and online, and give up my goal of finding out more and learning more about them and sharing them with you all?
nope.
the quest continues.
stay tuned for any updates, and please keep the updates coming if you or someone you know has anything to offer/share.
sidenote: i was on the phone with various upperdeck people this week attempting to find some more information. i received 0, and i mean zero updates or help or any direction whatsoever in regards to the set. i even had a guy tell me that he's positive that the ovechkin and backstrom sketches are very rare. (at which point i told him politely that those two are not even in the set... and he proceeded to give me Becketts tel # to ask them instead.) not kidding, it's the truth people. (sigh)
'till next time,
cheers!

(props teamchevelle)
For those that haven't seen this one yet - it's been on a reunion tour of ebay for about 3 times now. the first few had a BuyItNow around 800, or 700, and did get quite a bunch of bids the first time around but not to the sellers (reserve not met) liking.
Seems that he's willing to see how the auction carries this one without the BIN/MO style auction...
At least this one has a more realistic depiction, and has been seen before; stay tuned to see how it moves/ends in price (and hey, maybe it'll end up in a members showcase on our forums! never know... :)
TeamChevelle 02-09-2009, 12:26 PM Any bets on it making the end of the auction? :)

The lister says this is an impossible pull...after seeing all of these Howes I think I believe him.
TeamChevelle 02-13-2009, 12:14 AM Well Tony O sold for $56.01, way low in my opinion but the seller would not ship to Canada and that is a huge mistake. I can never understand why a seller would just shut out 75% of his potential buyers. I hope someone here stole this card.
mikpaq77 02-13-2009, 10:15 AM That's crazy...I alomost bid on it but thought it would end out of my price range! Dang!
30ranfordfan 02-13-2009, 10:38 AM Won't ship to Canada? How does anyone sell HOCKEY cards online, and refuse to ship to Canada? I know I've seen auctions where only the USA is listed as a place that they'll ship to, but anytime I've contacted a seller, and asked....... they said they were happy to ship to Canada.
If you're selling anything hockey, and won't ship to Canada..... you're wasting your time, and costing yourself money.

Boofish 02-23-2009, 01:36 AM Hello. I was lucky enough to pick-up 5 of the Howe 1/1's. So far, I've seen a total of 7 surface on ebay. Prices varied from a low of $56 to a high of $148. While I've only received 3, 2 are in transit, I've listed them on my website:
waynegretzky99.com
I will breakdown the individual prices in the morning with pictures if possible.
Drewk86a 02-24-2009, 04:24 AM Has anyone confirmed an official checklist of these sketch cards, yet. If not, then I guess I will just have to create my own Gordie sketches and list them as 1/1 on the Bay.
Verblood 02-25-2009, 12:57 PM It's been a week or so since I've had a chance to post,
It's been a week or so since I've had a chance to reply to various posts in this thread...
I was pleased to see that others posted new finds and auctions from ebay, but have been overwhelmingly thrilled (!!!) to see where the few Howe's have gone.
Boofish.
(atta'boy!)
I applaud your professional and neat layout for displaying them on your site, and applaud your dedication to collecting the Gordie sketch's... well played, we were head-to-head in bidding on some of them - and for the upside down oriented one I was not able to post my final bid in time on my phone as I was not home and was relying on a cell-web signal. (foiled!)
If you find anymore outside of the ebay realm - please, do not forget about his forum and this thread - please share your finds with us, it would be greatly appreciated.
As for other unique/interesting things I've noticed - and going along the lines of DrewK86a's post (which i personally don't condone if done as a misrepresented card in any way that would con buyers) - I noticed from other sports that multiple Sketch cards have surfaced, and are NOT regular brands (let alone "any" brand for that matter). Guys are beginning to post their own artwork on a card-sized canvas or paper and are selling them off as 1/1's. Some buyers bite at the ridiculous buy-it-now pricetags (saw a hamilton go for over $150!) and some just sit there to be recycled as a new auction once it expires. This isn't meant to go off topic from the Masterpieces Artists Sketch 1/1 collection - but two weeks ago a Bobby Orr surfaced that was a compilation of 3 famous bobby poses and hailed as a 1/1 sketch card while the Gordie's were in full effect... It wasn't a UD card, it wasn't a brand of any sort - it was a regular card from a regular guy trying to make some money... cool, nice idea for making $$$'s, but not fun to sort through if more people start making these.
Again, thanks for the information updates guys/girls - an official checklist yet has to surface, as do cards of other non A-list superstars (although the Espo was the closest we've seen to proof of "normal" guys existing in the sketch series). I really (and can't stress the weight of the "really") want to find a Willie O'Ree sketch card to complement my Orr's (and also a Bossy, but he's 2nd fiddle to finding an O'Ree)
'till next time...
(congrats again boofish!)

Boofish 03-29-2009, 07:30 PM There was one that was very similar. In fact I actually had to check mine to make sure my image wasn't stolen from my website. I can't yet post photos but if someone was willing to post for me, to show the similarities, I can send them the link.
TeamChevelle 03-29-2009, 07:43 PM Funny the artist would make them so much the same and that they would release both of them.
Boofish 03-29-2009, 08:28 PM Funny the artist would make them so much the same and that they would release both of them.
The weird thing is, there are 2 others that are almost identical. The only difference being one is a close-up (Head and shoulders), the other is extreme close-up (just head). The colors and facial expressions are the same. Kinda looks like the artist, R. Molinelli, took a short cut and just zoomed in on a previous sketch.
flemingc04 03-29-2009, 09:31 PM Just thought I'd post that today I saw the Masterpieces 1/1 sketch of Mark Messier (sounds like there's only one?). The guy was looking for something in the range of $400-$500 I believe. It was at the Toronto Card Show at the Leaside Gardens. I recognized the guy from the Fall Expo in Toronto, but unfortunately I only know him to see him.
Just figured I'd post this in case anybody wants to look into it.
Boofish 03-29-2009, 10:03 PM I don't know if this has ever been posted but I found a bunch of Masterpiece sketches on the artist's website.
http://www.mankindram.com/NHL.html
The above sketches are done by Rich Molinelli. It looks like Howe has 9 sketches done by this artist alone. I know that Dan Panosian also made sketch cards for masterpieces but haven't found a listing of what cards he drew.

Verblood 05-19-2009, 06:19 PM been tracking them, daily, still...
was going to post, but personally don't like when the repeats show up on ebay for hundreds more than the original auctions, yuck (and yawn). we saw these months ago already.
but, but but but - i'm still keepin the faith that new revelations come soon enough.
TeamChevelle 05-19-2009, 06:32 PM I hear ya, was shocked to see the jump in price. I would be surprised if they sell for the asking prices but you never know.

Drewk86a 05-29-2009, 02:13 AM Those sketch cards are interesting and all, but many of them look too cartooney or comic book-ish for me. Heck! I saw better artwork in the "You Draw The Card" contest from 1998-99 UD Choice inserts.
Boofish 05-30-2009, 10:40 PM On Thursday I was able to add my 7th Gordie Howe 1/1 Masterpiece Sketch card to my collection. If anyone remembers, this is the Howe that was painted upside down, ebay item 310142952381. The seller was looking for $999 Buy now with a best offer option. Well, we worked out a deal after the auction was over for $250. By far more than I've paid for the other 6, but I'm in to deep now to not try and get all/most of them. With this new addition, which should be in hand within the week, I now total 22 Gordie 1/1s :)

got a link? i'd like to see more.
very interesting guys, and congrats boofish - i found it comical that he was offering it that much - especially after seeing it online multiple times and reading/revealing enough about them to this point in time to not warrant a repeat selling for a $grand!

Verblood 10-17-2009, 02:20 PM man i miss seeing these pop-up as often as they did in the past year... (although they didn't pop-up often at all, haha)
that's a beautiful one, wonder if the market and price will be similar to where it was months ago...
i still wish an o'ree or bossy would show up.
