I have just started to collect hockey cards, I have a 5 year old son and was wondering what would be a good set to start on. I am not super interested in the value of cards I am just looking for something that my son and I can do together. We are both huge hockey fans and love the LA Kings (good or bad). Someone got my son a couple of packs of the 2002-03 UD vintage cards and they look great, but I am not sure if this is a good set to try to complete. Any suggestions and ideas that would set me on course for some fun times with my son would be appreciated.

thanks

Actually, I wouldn't suggest that set to try to complete... It's wayyy too big if you're going to be tracking the cards down through packs and trading if you don't want to put in a long time. Personally, I'd take a look at something that'd be fun, but has a base set below 200 because its hard to find that "last card" for larger sets. Feel free to ask others though :)

Nice looking cards , short set and relative inexpensive could be a Action Packed Rookie Update from 91 or 92. Newer maybe flashy since he is five something like Quantum leaf, Ionix, Aurora, Mystique or E-X/EX2001. My son and I were collecting the Mystique and Quantum Leaf because I found a good deal on a box of each and he loves the graphics of the cards. Just ideas....

A pretty easy and inexpensive set to complete is the Total Topps set. The packs are a buck and I finished up a set rather easy just buying packs at the local target. The cards arent very high end, but 10 cards for a buck is a pretty good deal!

Welcome AZmog and LBF! Good to see you!

For starting out like you seem to be doing AZmog I would recommend just about any of the newer cards. They are all pretty nice these days. I would actually recommend something along the lines of what floyd mentioned. Try buying a couple of the cheapest packs at a Target, KayBee, or Wal-Mart and decide which ones you and your son like the best. Then just run with it from there.

Good Luck!

Anything to do with Upper Deck are the easiest cards to trade example Upper Deck Honor Roll, Upper Deck MVP, Upper Deck Ice, ETC. They are a little more expensive then Topps Total but these cards are not as easily damaged seen as they are thicker and they are the nicest cards out there.

PERSONALLY I RECOMEND S ET THAT IS JUST ONE SETRIES.. UNLIKE UD WHICH PUTS OUT 2 SERIES AND MANY SHORT PRINTS. TOPPS TOTAL IS A GREAT SET TO START ON .. UD MVP MIGHT BE AN OPTION.. FAIRLY IN EXPENSIVE..
