View Full Version : Visiting Buffalo at the end of March
MacGruber 03-01-2009, 06:39 PM So the gf and I are going to be in Buffalo from the 27th to the 30th of March.
Kinda working out getting tickets for the Maple Leafs/Sabres games but what else is there to get into? I wanna hit up the Anchor Bar on North and Main and hopefully some killer record stores but I cant leave out wanting to stop off at a hobby shop or two. Any help with places to stop off at?
BTW I'll be staying in the downtown area to give a idea where the start off point will be.
I prob would be able (pending warden's approval) meeting up with some SCF members. Still a few wks away but would not mind getting a little site seeing in Buffalo.
*Note already hit up the Niagara Falls(both sides) and Grand Island region.
smp7d 03-01-2009, 06:55 PM go to duffs instead of anchor bar. better in my opinion but in the burbs.
Allbirght-(Seymour)Knox art gallery if that's your thing.
Go to Pearl Street after the game. Its not bad for an out of towner and right near the arena.
Always got the casino in niagara falls if you're bored.
dont know of any good record stores anymore (recently closed) but record theater in the university district is still open i think.
i hear dave and adams in tonawanda is good but i've never been as i dont make it out to the area much.
hope that helps.
MacGruber 03-01-2009, 07:09 PM Thanks, man its just something else of areas within cities to "steel clear" from but it is understandable. I was told the Anchor bar was the so called birth place of the Buffalo Wing, thus wanting to go there but will def check out Duff's.
Elmwood Village... hmm kinda dealing with a multi-race couple so I'll have to look into that.
Prob will check out Pearl Street for aftergame dealings. We've been at the Casino and while fun, its one of those been there done that deals.
Thanks alot smp7d for the headups of places so far. I invite you to check out my bucket, maybe there might be something there to pick up, would you happen to have a site/list?
Any more help?
geschrocks33 03-05-2009, 02:31 PM As for Hobby Stores there's always Dave and Adams, I believe there is info on their website about their address.
For single cards...Bases Loaded Collectibles on French Road, not aware of exact address, will work on that for you
For a small shop with a guy that has great deals on packs and boxes
The Card Store
4016 Union Road
Cheektowaga, NY, 14225
That guy has the best prices I've seen around on boxes and packs, and he has a good variety of stuff you can't find much anymore...a lot of 05-06 Products that I haven't seen around too much
Hope that helps for the card aspect of your trip

John (the owner) from The Card Store is an awesome guy - if you are looking to bust wax he is the person to go to in Buffalo.
Single wise he doesn't do much, but wax is his forte and he is the cheapest in town. He is also the closest to downtown but still isn't directly downtown. If you knew the area I could tell you the easiest way to go.
Anchor Bar if you have never been there is a good place to go for the history, but wing wise Duffs and others are better (though not downtown)
Pearl Street Grill is a good place to go before or after the game, if you are into micro-brew beer - but good food overall.
If you are into gambling there is a smaller Seneca based casino not more then 2 mins from the arena - so lmk if you are interested in that.
The Waterfront area is a nice place to go and sight see if it's a nice day. Other then the Falls I would say it's probably the nicest place in the GBA (Greater Buffalo area, yeah I made it up, lol)
Other then that, enjoy
MacGruber 03-05-2009, 03:51 PM Thanks alot with all the info so far. So some of the plans thats set are:
-Maple Leafs/Sabres Game *wanting to figure out best place after the
game to score Sarbres autos
-Duffs wins over the Anchor Bar
-Pearl Street sounds like a place to def check out
-The Card Store is a must
Is there something of a cultural district where all the nitelife is?
Thanks again and keep them coming, I have 2+wks to get all
types of ideas.
Well I'll be at a Hampton Inn Downtown for the start off point of anything
but I have a few more "is there..." even after searching throughout the web:
any rock clubs or record stores
looking for a skating rink

The Hampton Inn downtown is about a half mile away from the 'bar/nightlife' district in Buffalo. Just take a left on Delaware and you can't miss it, lol (easily walking distance) - forgot the name of the one bar, but it has a much more rock flavor then a typical club/bar and you won't miss it.
As for skating rink, I can't help you there, lol

I would also recommend the Naval park if your near HSBC arena... several ships to view, plus you can see the Aud being dismantled
I wholeheartedly agree about the Card Store... best prices in the area
senrab 03-05-2009, 04:12 PM Hit up Chippewa, it's where all the Sabres go to get wasted. :smokin:
JacktheRipper 03-05-2009, 08:49 PM Everyone covered the hobby aspect, but if you're in Buffalo do yourself a favor and find either Mighty Taco or Louie's Texas Red Hots. You will not be disappointed.
MacGruber 03-06-2009, 04:41 AM -Yea cards shops and the game are covered though still wanting to
find out where I can be at the end of the game either indoors
or outdoors to get anything signed.
-It also looks like food options are now covered as well.
-Music, well a cpl record stores will do just fine.
Any other hidden gems that Buffalo has to offer?

add Jim's Steakout to this list.

If the weather is decent, the observation deck at the top of Buffalo City Hall might be open, you can get a good view of the city up there
wnysupport 03-06-2009, 12:00 PM add Jim's Steakout to this list.
Plus side to being at the Hampton downtown, there is a Jim's Steakout about 1 min away at the corner of Chippewa and Delaware

open until 5am!
senrab 03-06-2009, 05:00 PM Don't know of any other record stores besides Record Theatre...Home of the Hits and New World Record are both gone...
MacGruber 03-07-2009, 12:42 AM Well thats a bummer, alot of record stores are closing up across the states. All Im looking for is a good store that has alot of selection.
I see theres small chain restaurants being posted, any local places of some killer
food that isnt near the bar type?
Wingsfan-13 03-07-2009, 10:50 AM Sounds like a sweet trip, have fun!!!!!!
doniceage 03-07-2009, 11:11 AM Cromalk,
Let us see the pictures and the long story in a post after you critique all the information you took in. Hopefully, you both have a great time.

ravens_creed 03-07-2009, 12:54 PM Perhaps someone can speak to this better than I can, but...
When I was in Buffalo last, we were told that the two places to go for real Buffalo wings were The Anchor Bar, and the place we ended up going to, Honey's. I was NOT disappointed with my experience at Honey's. Definitely a smaller, family-run place with fantastic wings.
Duff's is great, BUT.... it's a chain! We have a bunch here in Toronto, too. The eats will be good, but I'm going to go ahead and say that the authenticity may be lacking, if you were hoping for something that goes back to the roots of Buffalo wings, that is.
scottkoz20 03-07-2009, 01:22 PM Duffs is a local chain, expanded up into TO. Honey's is in Niagara Falls and is not bad at all.
MacGruber 03-07-2009, 01:34 PM Such awesome feedback from all. Now if I can find some autograph seekers they can help me out LMK where I can be after a game to get some autos.

I like Chef's a lot. It's an Italian restaurant on Seneca St. not far from the arena. I think a lot of the Sabres and visiting teams eat their pre-game meals there. They're not open on Sundays
http://ilovechefs.com
Dammit, now you are making me want to go back home right now! :sign0020: I am going home next weekend though. Post lots of pics of your travels and the game!
MacGruber 03-07-2009, 03:50 PM Hah yea it looks like I'll be capturing alot of moments from there. Still looking for a few diehard fans from Buffalo that can let a fan know where I can score some Au's after a game.
senrab 03-07-2009, 05:08 PM Sorry I can't help you there...I'm not into meeting players or chasing autographs. Good luck though!!
MacGruber 03-09-2009, 11:17 AM Things are coming together nicely for the trip. Still looking for a spot to run into players after the game but other than that, everything is basically set.
seattle88 03-26-2009, 10:07 PM For skating, there is a nice little free rink in downtown buffalo. It is the rotary rink right on main street. There is also the pepsi center in amherst but you would have to check their schedule.
geschrocks33 03-26-2009, 10:19 PM To get auto's, you'd probably have to go to players parking lot.
Say you go out the main front entrance of the arena.
Go right, down that street (Perry St.)
Walk down that street, then hang a right (Illinois St.)
Follow that street down until you get to South Park St, make a right on that street, follow a little bit, the players parking lot is on the right just past the parking ramp.
Hope that helps :)
senrab 03-29-2009, 08:22 PM So how did it go? You saw a very exciting game
