View Full Version : who is better? hunter/wells??????
gioperation 06-24-2003, 05:46 AM I heard this on baseball tonight and gammons said wells was a best center fielder in the AL, and nobody disagreed with him...
I would have if I was on the show..
I vote for torrii...
sealedpwr 06-24-2003, 05:50 AM I am gonna go with wells ,being a bluejay fan. Wells is good now and is only gonna get better as he get's older and more experienced.
whatnobeer420 06-24-2003, 08:28 AM Just keep this in the back of your mind, the Twins centerfield wall is only 6'5 and it moves. If you put me on a wall that i can just stick my hand up and my arm is over the wall,id have like 6 gold gloves also.Especially when the wall where id play is plastic.Dont get me wrong, both guys are great.i just feel if Hunter played for a team that had a real wall you wont hear much from him.

what about the dome has the worse turf in the world and it is like concrete, that doesn't stop him from laying down it get them and uhhhh, how many other ballparks has he went over the wall...or up against it...
Enigma 06-24-2003, 11:53 AM Simply put...long-term, I would go with Hunter...
To add to the wall argument...how about the homer he robbed Bonds of getting at the All-Star Game in Milwaukee....
Anyone who makes a catch at the wall, regardless of stadium, is always seen on Sportscenter...
studin 06-24-2003, 12:24 PM I like both alot but Wells is a player I get to watch alot more. I hope he makes the All-Star game.
Victory Sports 06-24-2003, 01:23 PM i think that hunter is by far. remember that catch that terrence long made last year against the red sox to rob manny of the game winning home run? that wall is tiny, and you still saw it on sports center for about a month. what im tryin to say is the wall doesnt matter.
Metsfan78 06-24-2003, 03:56 PM But wht about the hustle of Hunter he can cover a lot of ground in that outfield.....
Masson26 06-24-2003, 05:10 PM Wells is better overall, hunters better at defense, but hunter isnt a very good hitter
Enigma 06-24-2003, 05:36 PM When I see best (fill in any position here), then it tells me the person is talking about defense. If they wanted offensive output, they would say who is the best hitting (fill in any position here). Therefore, in accordance with the question on Baseball Tonight, the answer would easily be Torii Hunter...
podstock 06-24-2003, 09:12 PM Torii Hunter has proven himself to be amongst the best in defense
His offense is what prevents people from saying he's the best CF currently playing.
Not sure about Wells
And I am moving this thread to Pro Sports Talk

exactly, but here is another thing remember when andrew jones couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat...and even though that was is soft, it is held up by something hwo about those steel beams that will knock your butt out...
pwaldo 06-24-2003, 10:19 PM I'll go with Hunter now and probably forever.
Wells is too new to start saying he's better.
But I'm I the only one that thinks Hunter is kinda overrated. He doesn't put up great offensive stats and while he does make some awesome catches I don't watch him everyday to tell if he is very good or just makes flashy catches.

if you have ever seen him in person and have any type of baseball instincts you will know that this dude has a knack for the ball, and he can go get it...if hunter wasn't in center you would see jacque jones getting the air time...
IggyWH 06-24-2003, 10:35 PM I'll take Wells... he had over 100 RBI's last year and this year he already has 70. He's the young Juan Gonzalez & Manny Ramirez.

hell I wouldn't have even argued with gammmons if he said best hitting but he said the best CF, so I think you have to go with hunter, because I am sure the case could be made that pujols is the best OF'er in MLB and I can't say that is true, he isn't better than jones, hunter, cameron, bernie or edmonds...
john1170 06-24-2003, 11:21 PM I give the edge to Wells. But not by much. Both are very good ball players but Wells has more offense to add then Hunter. Can't go wrong with either player.
Arastis 06-25-2003, 01:03 AM Wells is the better hitter, Hunter the better fielder, but not by a ton. I have seen Wells on Web Gems a lot of times I am going to give the nod to Wells because he is a more productive player.
insanefishpossay 07-01-2003, 03:14 PM Hunter is better defensively, wells is better offensivly.
I think Hunter could be better offensivly, but he goes up to plate every time trying to blast a 500-ft home run. He's even been quoted as to say that he'd rather hit long bombs than be a .300 hitter. I'd be fine with that, if he could actually do it. He does hit homers sometimes, but more often than not he ends up strikeing out.
You can't say that hunter is only good defensivly because of the wall at the metrodome. He has made catches like that in many other stadiums(the all star game, for example). He goes all out for the ball every time, and will dive whenever he has to. He's always ready and giving 100% in the field.
One time in the dome, there was a fly ball to left field, Jaque Jones lost it in the lights. Suddenly you saw Torii appear seemingly out of nowhere, all-out sprinting, and made a great dive for the ball..... too bad it was just out of his reach though, would have been a great play =(
Jakeklock0019 07-01-2003, 03:30 PM hunter is better overall ... for some reason he dropped a little in Offense this year.
And the Dome's turf IS concrete with that astroturf over it. You can't see it but the centerfield wall is made out of wood and doesn't give at all.
Whatnobeer:
How do you know how high the Dome wall is? It's higher than 6'5" How high was the wall in Milwaukee at the All Star Game?
Tigers#1 07-01-2003, 04:19 PM Right now, i'd go with Hunter.
gioperation 07-01-2003, 05:05 PM Hunter went up last night and robbed another jack against the white sox..
HoBaFoo66 07-01-2003, 05:06 PM The dome wall has to be higher than 6'5''! But anyweays, Hunter made another statement last ngiht, robbing Valentin of a home run, IN CHICAGO. Even after that, he had to avoid hitting Bobby Kielty on the way down, and even smacked into one of the supprts on the CF wall. Just because Wells is a better hitter, doesnt say much about being a betetr CFer. Yuo dont bat from center field.
Jakeklock0019 07-02-2003, 04:01 AM I would say the wall at the Dome is more like 7' .... how tall is hunter? 6'2"? 6'3"? then when he stretches his arm out........ and you can see his feet are at least a foot of the ground. Hunter is definitely the better player.
Masson26 07-02-2003, 10:46 AM Hunter is 6'2"
Wells is a good fielder, not great but good, and twice as good of a hitter.
