What the heck is going on with mailmen in the world? I have now seen multiple reports of mailmen purposely damaging cards, stealing cards, not delivering cards, and just not doing their job. Is the economy so bad that mailmen have to steal cards to make more money? Its pathetic

My mailman is freaking amazing. He is here at the same time every day. We talk all the time. HE IS A HOCKEY FAN! We actually have inside jokes with our mailman. I KNOW where he lives. He is a great guy and very kind and supportive of mine and my brothers hockey. Why cant all mailmen get the picture and be like my mailman. my gosh...

yeah i agree with you, luckily i got a mailman who is also very nice. Probably twice a month i see him stop by and i give him a can of coke for his hard work. We actually shared christmas presents with him this year. I just decided to give him a little something and was not expecting anything in return but yeah hes a great guy

I'm probably one of the people you refer to but I really don't want to think our mailman is shady. He's a really nice guy and I just hate to think that he'd do anything of that nature.

yes but you are not the only one. a friend of mine's mailman has deliberately bent bubble mailers ruining i think it was $140 bv in cards. its sad that these people still have jobs with the crap they think they can pull. I know you may think hes a good guy and thats always good to find the good in people but some people are just stupid and disrespectful.

I have a solid mail carrier, we've never really talked other than the odd hello in the nicer weather when I'm outside but she always has the mail delivered at the same time every day and I've never had a problem with it being damaged. Great carrier, I hope we don't lose her any time soon.

the real problem isnt really just a mailman though it goes througha longer process (ive worked in post office) and really anyone inside the office that sorts the mail could take it before the mailman ever sees it. Shady people can just see its labelled hockey cards and isnt insured and thats it I guess, they think they have the right to take it.

I might suggest that some of the card damage comes from the machines they run the mail on. If the card is in a regular white envelope it will wind up on a machine which will bend the envelope (and its contents) around a 12" diameter flywheel. Things like bubble mailers and photo mailers are not supposed to be sorted on machines, but too often they find their way onto the automated equipment.

Even boxes are not immune to damage. The latest machine will drop your box from a height of four feet into a wire cage. The next piece of mail falling into that cage could very well be a 30 lb bundle of magazines.

I would hope that most of the problems you describe caould be attributed to processing damage and not the carrier. I like to think they are trustworthy, although there are bad eggs in every company.

LOL I can't believe how many of you know your mail carrier and/or speak to them. Mine is a different person everyday. However, when I lived in WNY our mail lady was the wife of my dad's cousin.

I'm pretty close to senrab on this one. I don't know that it's a different carrier every day (I would suspect not) but we've got one big mailbox unit... with seperate locked boxes for each house.... The mail isn't actually delivered to your door. In nearly 15 years of living there, I've never actually seen the mailman's face.

Mine comes at crazy hours too...one day they'll be here at 1pm, and on Saturday they won't come until 6.

PS. speaking of the post office stealing cards—I remember a friend of my mom's sending me some cards when I was little and I received a ripped open, empty envelope. And 2 weeks ago, I ordered some back issues of a magazine from Ireland and when I got the envelope yesterday it was torn open and the contents inside were replaced with a printout of a term paper!

I don't really care what time the mail shows up.... so long as it's there before I get home from work (which is about 5:30).

My newspaper deliverer, that's another story. The paper is SUPPOSED to be at my front door by 6:00 AM. I don't usualy check for it until 7:00 AM. I've phoned the paper company about 8 times in the last month.... becuase when leaving for work @ 8:00, it's not there yet.... and the thing is no good to me in the evening.

Surprised to see little interaction with others mailmen. Like i said before, I have inside jokes with mine. He delivers to us every day basically and is great. he treats things with care and works hard. I think this christmas i will be leaving a present in our box the last day they deliver mail (23rd?) for him. hes an awesome guy.

Drew,
I recommend anyone that has concerns about the machine can always ask for HAND SORT. Any white envelopes that I send always get the Hand Sort Stamp.

I've never met my mailman. Mainly because I'm at work when he/she drops off. Also, they don't deliver to the house. They deliver to a mailbox on the street corner with many different compartments. I guess it makes it easier for them to deliver. Either way, I've never seen him/her.

Also, how do you know that the mailman damaged the cards himself?

We've always gotten mail on Saturdays. However, the Post Office is losing a lot of money due to the internet/economy and this week the Postmaster General want sot ask Congress to nix mail on Saturdays. Personally, I think they should have evening hours at the post office seeing as it's very hard to get to one on a weekday if you don't work by one...but that's just my silly idea

Post Office will never stop delivering on Saturday. Congress won't allow it. When the Postmaster General floated the notion of stopping Saturday delivery he was using it as a threat to steer Congress in another direction regarding a finance issue.

You may see reduced window hours, but they will never stop delivery

I am a mailman in Canada. I can honestly say that a lot of the damage I see in packages has already occurred when it arrives to us for delivery. I handle every package carefully, because dealing with hockey cards myself I understand the money and care that people have for these packages they are expecting. Also, here in Canada we have postal outlets inside smaller retail centres which serve the public after the regular hours at the post office. We don't have delivery on Saturdays, but I think we have a fairly good service level for the public considering their work schedules etc.

Yeah, here the Post Office has to be its own building and can't operate inside a retail store, drug store, mall etc.

And when i called them, they asked me if it said do not bend on it,so i took some time away from work and dropped everything off and showed them,i guess they are gonna confront the delivery person.
I have my doubts i'll get anything out of it.

you better. did you pay for the photos? if so they should be forced to pay you for it. ESPECIALLY when it says DO NOT BEND and they are bent. thats just dumb :smash:

Not sure about the Great White North, but in the US when something won't fit inside the mailbox the letter carrier is supposed to leave a "too large to deliver" card instructing you to pick up the piece at the post office.

knowing my mailman, he would ring the doorbell, and place it in my hands. he's great like that. takes care of everything
