What is the deal with these now a days? I know The Cup used to always have them, but what other brands have people found the holy NHL Shields in? Just curious more than anything.

ITG Ultimate Memoribilia has had them several times..... plus some of ITG's other products. I think Black had them. Not sure what else.

Hot Prospects (not being produced this year), OPC Premier (I think, but could be mistaken), and Ultimate Collection also had them last year.

in the past - ITG Ultimate Memorabilia, UD Premier
presently - Hot Prospects, UD Ultimate (the successor to Premier), and The Cup

UD Black and OPC Premier did not have shields and Hot Prospects was not produced for 2008-09

The real question regarding shields is, where did UD get so many shields of a guy like Gretzky when you factor in the number of sweaters out on the market relative to the number of shield cards he has.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmm...............:winking0071:

The number related to your "so many shields" for Gretzky is about 9 cards made over the last 7 years. UD certainly bought at least 9 game-used jersey of Wayne Gretzky since 7 years, don't you think? For Patrick Roy, UD released a total of only 12 Shields cards since the first one made in 2002-03. Sounds decent numbers over that period.

At a minimum of $20,000 a piece for lightly used Rangers jerseys all the way up to $75,000 for a decent Oilers jersey, no, I don't think it sounds decent. Especially since there will be more this year.

By "more" you certainly want to say maybe 1 or 2 copies to be released in 2008-09, because look how many Wayne Gretzky NHL Shields cards were release on last year in 2007-08: the answer is only ONE (a Gretzky/Messier). 9 Shields over a period of 7 years is a decent number. We don't speak about hundreds of Wayne Gretzky NHL Shields cards here.

I understand the fact we are talking about approximately 10 shields. That said, we are still talking about acquiring sweaters of a guy who has been out of the league almost a decade and a majority of his jerseys were worn in an era when game used collecting was NOT a popular hobby by any means. Teams did not wear as many jerseys back in the 80's and early 90's which was predominantly when Gretzky played. Most teams would have a guy wear maybe a couple a year. Ok, now the BIG factor you failed to consider: most of his jerseys did NOT have shields until the late 80's Gretzky. I find it HIGHLY unlikely UD could track that many down, let alone afford them. But, if they have documentation to prove otherwise, guess that could do some explaining about lots of things huh? Just my opinion...............

So you think UD don't use game-used jersey stuff of Gretzky? UD has an exclusive contract with Gretzky. Gretzky played in many All-Star games, Playoffs games, seasons games, pre-seasons games, etc. moreover Gretzky played for Edmonton, LA Kings, St Louis Blues, NY Rangers, Team Canada, etc. The only game-used jersey UD didn't get of Gretzky was from the St Louis Blues. For the rest, they had pieces of everything. Do you remember the Gretzky 2000 UD Master Collection? UD easily acquired 20 various game-used jerseys of Gretzky over the last decade. Please without facts stop your conspiracy theory about UD not using real Gretzky game-used stuff because it would be too much expensive for them to acquire this game-used stuff. The quantity of Shields cards of Gretzky (about 10) are totally decent numbers.

I question Upper Deck sometimes for their quality control but they have to use real game used shields. With the number of Gretzky jersey and patch cards out there 10 shields seems about right.
