View Full Version : How do you feel about Ovechkin's showmanship after his 50th goal?
reoddai 03-20-2009, 09:56 AM For those of you who haven't read what happened, Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the season!
You can read all about it here:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=271894&lid=sublink01&lpos=headlines_nhl
Or the video here:

Ovechkin is well known for his enjoyment of and celebratory nature after scoring a goal. This time, scoring his 50th goal for the third season was followed by a new celebration. He placed his stick on the ice and warmed his hands over it.
What's you opinion on that? Too much? Not enough? Just right? Does this affect his hobby love for the better or worse? Vote & chime in.
scottkoz20 03-20-2009, 10:00 AM Ovechkin took one out of Chad Johnson's playbook and it was better! But it was over the top.
devilshockey1967 03-20-2009, 10:02 AM I know how professional sport frown upon "excessive" celebratory gestures, but I say give the person there moment to shine. As long as it isnt insulting to the opposing team. I dont feel Ovechkins 50th goal celebration was an insult to the Lightning. lets face it his stick is "hot", 3 50 goals season in 4 years...WOW....its ON FIRE.....
30ranfordfan 03-20-2009, 10:02 AM Way over the top. Doesn't really bother me.... but I can see why others might get annoyed. I'm just waiting for the NHL to invoke limitations on celebrations... a la the NFL.
Bakeryracing 03-20-2009, 10:07 AM He could did something a little bit cooler. I personally didnt like the "dance" he did. But, some people need to stop with this stuff (not you reoddai). Ovechkin celebrates to much after a goal. Its ridiclous. So what he gets over excited. He brings alot of excitment to the game. And if you ever watched a Capitals game at home, you would know what im talking about.

I appreciate the comment. I tried to word the first post as neutrally as possible and didn't vote until others voted.
Washington was one of those hockey towns that felt... muted to me before Ovechkin. I mean Jagr brought some talen when he was there, but other than that... Now that Ovechkin is there, you can see how much the NHL meant to the people in that state. He's getting the keys to the city, and is very much a popular figure. The excitement he does bring with every goal would be a blessing for any hockey town.
I only posted this question because its his 50th goal and this celebration was slightly different than his regular. Its his third 50th goal season (in a row?) and the first for the Caps for a captain or for any player. Just interesting to see the public's reaction to this since the different opinions from the onair pundits and the bloggasphere have made their views well know.
Cheers,
reoddai
newbee 03-20-2009, 10:25 AM Anything that is going to pee off Don Cherry is alright with me....keep it up OVY
Supercarlover 03-20-2009, 10:51 AM His celebration was relevant (hot stick = 50 goals), not insulting to the other team, and not too long. I'm okay with it. :)
Inferno 03-20-2009, 11:24 AM Don Cherry and Sidney Crosby aren't going to like that.. :P

Prime B 03-20-2009, 11:41 AM There is no denying Ovechkin is an amazing hockey talent but I think he does need to lay off some of the silly stuff. Every now and then is ok, within reason, like jumping into the glass, fist-pumping, etc. All these extracurricular stunts though are just infantile.
It'll all catch up to him at some point when he has his head down on the train tracks and the locomotive comes a callin'...................

Agree. I LOVE Ovy don't get me wrong this is the only downside to him i don't like. Be thankful there is no Dino Cicerelli on the ice at that time.
BamBam 03-20-2009, 12:58 PM Meh - I don't have a problem with it since Buttmen is taking an NBA approach to promoting the league. Its the NEW NHL so get used to seeing some of this. I like Ovie and his straight forward honesty. He looks at like if you like it great, if you don't, oh well.
I'm glad he explained afterwards because I had no idea that meant his stick was hot ? I actually thought he was bowing to his stick
xnamyeknomx 03-20-2009, 01:08 PM love it.....when there are only 2 others who did this before you, celebrate however you want!!! If the other team dosent like it, well then try harder to stop him from scoring:) just my 2 cents!!

duwal 03-20-2009, 01:49 PM yeah, after seeing it on that Youtube clip it really wasn't anything at all, I thought it would be a lot more
sholi2000 03-20-2009, 02:40 PM I'm 37.
He looked ridiculous.
When Selanne broke Bossy's rookie record (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtk6yVqDy3Q), he threw his glove in the air and sniped it. It was awesome. It was something special. He was a rookie.
Ovechkin is the world's greatest goal scorer (right now), he's expected to score goals, and that includes 50. It was over the top, and he will get his clock rung for it.
olsont5 03-20-2009, 02:51 PM haha i love it! awesome Jimi Hendrix reference
Pheebs888 03-20-2009, 02:52 PM If you ask me, it's all part of the show and I love this about Ovechkin. You're happy?Celebrate, nothing wrong with that as long as it doesnt delay the game or is a direct dig at the other team. I say keep it up Alex and I'm enjoying it (p.s. I would still enjoy it even if he did it against the Habs)

BamBam 03-20-2009, 04:27 PM Good stuff Devs finding the Hendrix clip. Ahhh the magical benefits of youtube. While I'm sure Mike Bossy didn't do much, if any, over the top celebrating during his ridiculous 50 goal per season streak, thats what makes Ovie... well...Ovie and I hope he keeps on scoring and celebrating. Unless he is playing against Philly in the playoffs, then I hope he gets in a scoring funk. :winking0071:
geschrocks33 03-20-2009, 04:28 PM I love Ovechkin and his celebrations. When you're the best goal scorer in the league, go ahead and celebrate however you want. When he was interviewed on NHL Network you'll learn that this celebration wasn't even his idea...it was Jose Theodore's idea.
I love Ovechkin, and his celebrations, and the fact the Crosby gets annoyed by it. 100% awesome

AGREED
sgazi 03-20-2009, 05:09 PM You should have 50 goals after you've taken almost 500 shots (and I'm sure he'll end up with a good bit more than 500 by the end of the season). It's really not that impressive when you take the time to read between the lines. It's the same story every season. The way he acts is one of the reasons I can't stand the NFL. I don't mind some enthusiasm, but give me a break. I can't wait to see how steamed he is when he not only ends up with less points than Crosby, but also watches Geno grab the Hart.

I can't wait for Crosby's whining about this celebration
Here's a few things to think about...
Who won the Calder their rookie year? Ovechkin
Who has more points right now? Ovechkin
Who scores highlight reel goals night in and night out? Ovechkin
Who throws huge hits instead of running away and hiding? Ovechkin
Who plays with the most intensity in the entire league? Ovechkin
Enough said
senrab 03-20-2009, 05:47 PM Reminded me of a football celebration a la T.O.
(and no, this isn't Don Cherry posting) ;-)

couldnt have said it better myself!!!! i would take OV over crosby ANY day!!!
Redman08 03-20-2009, 06:23 PM I though It was ok, i actually figured hed be more dramatic, the man does play with real passion and thats why hes my favorate player....
gregmal05 03-20-2009, 06:45 PM I usually like his antics, but his celebration after the 50th goal reminded me too much of some of those hoodlums who play basketball or football.

Finally a post I agree with. I usually like Ovechkin's celebrations after he scores because they are him showing his passion for the game. This however just looked plain stupid! One of those football celebrations that are premeditated and not classy. I railed against Cherry for his comments about Ovechkin before but now Ovechkin shouldn't have done that and someone will nail him for doing that.

Prime B 03-20-2009, 07:44 PM You should have 50 goals after you've taken almost 500 shots
That is actually one of the best points I have ever heard about Ovechkin. If you take a grip o' shots you're bound to get that many goals!
Yes, he is talented and has a great shot, but dude, scoring on 10% of your shots isn't anything earth-shattering to be honest.
cnshockey 03-20-2009, 07:49 PM He's alexander ovechkin. if you are that good you can do what you want. let him have his fun.
Nucks4cup 03-20-2009, 08:16 PM I cant wait to see what he does for #60. I say he wears a ugly suit and tie, like the crap Don Cherry wears, under his jersey and takes his jersey off after he scores and does 1 lap around the rink.

Man would I love to see that. Or even just wear a weird suit in his postgame interview or something like that. That would be great. Good idea!

I dont buy that point at all. I think people are either forgetting, or underestimating the fact that it takes a certain amount of skill to put yourself in position to take a shot, let alone a good one. Teams key in on Ovechkin and he still finds ways to get himself open for shots. This isnt basketball where anhyone with the ball can throw it up there. The way he creates space and gets himself into position to shoot, and further gets the puck through traffic, is amazing. Not to mention every shot he takes creates an opportunity, and often rebounds from his shots are as good as a pass. The main poinbt though, is shooting percentage in hockey does not matter at all. With Ovechkin, shooting 500 times just shows how much better he is than everyone else. Not to mention he often shoots, and scores from areas where others dont even bother to shoot from. So, maybe he only scores 1 out of 10 form outside the icrcles, but other guys dont even try. Shooting at 10% and getting 50 goals is better than shooting at 25% i.e. Ribeiro, and only scoring 27 times.
nic11 03-20-2009, 09:58 PM Personnaly, this morning I did that celebration in a friendly hockey game, it was pretty fun. I liked that, it's original, it's HOT!
devilshockey1967 03-20-2009, 10:01 PM actually the celebration is catching on in all walks of life, I saw a few Hobo types doing the celebration over some burning leaves and things..........so I yelled " GO OVECHKIN" they didnt respond
Brodeur_fan666 03-21-2009, 12:00 AM We're not talking about Terrel Owens celebrations here : Ovechkin never offended anyone by doing that and he never intended to make fun of the opponent ( Tampa ).
geschrocks33 03-21-2009, 12:04 AM I really can't wait for Don Cherry's comments on this one, because I'm sure he'll have something to say
MatsSundin13Rocks 03-21-2009, 08:22 AM We're not talking about Terrel Owens celebrations here : Ovechkin never offended anyone by doing that and he never intended to make fun of the opponent ( Tampa ).
Well Malone was sure offended since he said he would remember it and get Ovechkin at a different time.
Drifter2000 03-21-2009, 01:22 PM I love Ovechkin, he's easily my favorite player in the NHL right now by a mile. I love his passion, and don't mind the celebrating because I feel it shows how passionate he is in the heat of the moment when he scores.
This particular one is something I can understand people being a bit irritated at. Something that he planned on doing ahead of time, not something he just did in excitement at the spur of the moment. It comes off more as showboating than it does passionate celebration, so I can see the problem here.
That being said...it didn't bother me all that much. It's not like he goes out and does something like this every game, or even every season.
My opinion: Worst celebration I have ever seen, but I don't dislike the fact that he celebrates. I think it's good for the game, the league and some of the players could lighten up as well.
alaskan_teg00 03-21-2009, 07:02 PM I say let him do his thang! Ovy is on fire! He's exciting to see on tv but I could only imagine in person. Like others mentioned as long as he isn't disrespecting the other team his celebrations are all good.
TysonX504 03-21-2009, 08:13 PM I Agree, he didn't offend anyone (other then Malone and Halpren but really who care's what they have to say?) He's just having fun and loving what he does, and really I have no problem at all with him doing that. When you're the best at what you do, you can do things like that. GO OVECHKIN
geschrocks33 03-21-2009, 11:33 PM When you're the best, do what you want. Who cares what Don Cherry, Ryan Malone, Tocchet, Halpern, Crybaby Crosby, or anyone else says. He's simply an amazing player, the BEST in the league hands down. Let Ovie celebrate however he wants

I agree, here's a player who show's alot of passion for the sport!
Goose97 03-22-2009, 07:18 PM Ovy is one of those masters in the art of recognition. Everyone can easily identify with him. Everyone here is talking about him. Do you really think he cares what the rest of the world thinks of him with what he does. He's absolutely smart out there. He knows what he's doing, and regardless what anyone else says. Take a look at the result. The Caps are a top team, they are loose, and having tons of fun. He can back up his actions without any fear, and the rest of the team will feed off that. All the other players who can't be origional like Ovechkin and play with that passion will just be envious. Envy is a result of fear, and fear breeds losers. It will be interesting what everyone will be saying when he gets his first cup.
doniceage 03-22-2009, 08:09 PM Personally, I don't think he can ever celebrate too much after Don Cherry thread. I mean if you want to be a biased feel free. But if your going to chastise A.O. make sure you chastise all the Canadians that have celebrated to the point of excess. There are plenty but you know what Crosby is not the face of the NHL anymore in my opinion and some people need to come to face that fact. They should be spreading the love around with GENO as he been playing better than Crosby for some time. A lot of the fans love A.O. and if that helps grows the market of hockey then share that as well.
A lot of the fans love his exuberance and love for the game. So don't know how you can get on him when he celebrates. I have no problem if you want to crack on him for celebrating just get on everyone about it and not A.O.
DON
Dergula 03-23-2009, 09:20 AM I think Don summed it up the best this weekend. You don't do that when your up on a team WITH even a ROOKIE goalie. Tampa won't forget it. It will come back.
I don't like that style no matter WHO does it. Theo Flurey... A.O, dont matter.

Yeah, but it's not like he can pick and choose when he scores 50 goals, I don't think he came into the season saying "Oh I think I'll score my 50th on a rookie goalie, cool!".
Cam98 03-23-2009, 07:42 PM i enjoyed it, not to many people can get 3 seasons in a row 50+ goals..
it was awesome
if he hits 60 cant wait to see his next celebration

Do we really even care what Don thinks? I know I personally don't give a fig what he says about A.O. as he just looking to bash him. If it was Crosby doing this I think he would be spouting a whole another tune. But perhaps that just me.

patrickadams26 03-26-2009, 01:27 PM Just right.
Did anyone see Chris Higgins celebration when he scored last night? Three fist pumps, my god have this guy crucified now!
Brodeur_fan666 03-30-2009, 02:37 AM Did anyone see Chris Higgins celebration when he scored last night? Three fist pumps, my god have this guy crucified now!
Yeah but he is not scoring often , that's why he was so excited :sign0020:
richied98 03-30-2009, 03:58 AM I'm a die hard Flyers fan, and I LOVE what Ovechkin does for the league. If he acted like that after every goal and planned a specific celebration then I'd have a problem.
The game needs some emotion in it. Hockey players will always be classy, and always will be respectful, but the game does need to show some signs of life. With fights slowly being pushed out of the game, or at least monitored, we need to keep the emotion, and most importantly the players need to have fun.
I would be against what he did if it went on for a minute or two, but a few seconds???? Nothing really there to complain about. We've seen people Ride their stick, fly accross the ice on one knee, salute the fans....the list goes on. If anything, doing it as a rode team may have been insulting, but traditionalist of the game need to realize to open their eyes and realize that the game is changing. New generations of hockey players are coming into the league with fresh takes on how the game should be played. The game is changing, and one would hope that our beloved game does not turn into a festival of celebrations like football or basketball...(mostly football).
If Ovechkin celebrates after every big milestone goal then so be it...let the man love his life...i wish i loved my job as much as he did.
That's all for tonight my friends.

gretzky_collector 04-01-2009, 06:00 AM He gets so excited when he scores. He seems to really love playing hockey.
Would anyone feel any different if Crosby celebrated his goals the way Ovechkin did? Probably not, Crosby is God's gift to hockey.
maradona 04-01-2009, 06:53 AM Who cares?
lavalav 04-01-2009, 07:04 AM love the celebration, if teams dont like it, they should stop him.
richied98 04-01-2009, 11:42 AM Honestly, do people really feel Crosby is top 5 in the league anymore?
If I were building a team I'd start with Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Malkin, and even Thorton over Crosby. Ovechkin is by far the best player in the league, while I see Datsyuk as the most all around skilled. I'd even consider taking Iginla over Crosby simply for his leadership skills. While Crosby is no doubt an amazing player and will be a top scorere in the league for years, I simply just don't think he's even in the top 3 or 5 of best players in the NHL.
chljoe 04-02-2009, 12:09 AM It was a bit dumb to be honest. I love the Caps and AO but it was just goofy. I like how his teammates bailed on him and were laughing while he did it. I didn't realize how much of a xenophobe Don Cherry can be until they showed that clip of him from February.
