View Full Version : Upper Deck Redemptions Thread

I pose a few questions here, that could help me and maybe some others interested in this topic.
Question 1: Do all Upper Deck Hockey Boxes(ie. Trilogy, SPGU, Artifacts, ICE...etc) have redemptions in them? Pulled them just out of Trilogy, Artifacts, and SP Authentic.

Question 2: I have redeamed about 5 or 6 redemptions in the past month. About how long, in your experience, does it take to actually receive these redemptions, and any problems with them?

Question 3: Which boxes, in your experience, gave you the best redemptions as in value? The most valuable one I have gotten sadly is a SP Authentic Dual Auto of Bobby Clarke/Ron Hextall.

Question 4: Do redemptions you pull just apply for the box that you pull it out of? Or, have you or can you pull a redemption for lets say, UD Black, out of a box of UD Trilogy? I never have, but am curious.

Question 5: Does anything good ever actually come from an Artifacts Rookie Redemptions? Are they auto or just regular redemption cards? Are they just from Artifacts or other types?

These are all the questions I can think of that I had as of now. You can feel free to use this thread to answer, or ask your own questions as well. Also, share your experiences too! Thanks!

I second the post from FlamesFan999. I'll also add that typically the more rare the redemption is, the longer the wait may be. However, something like the Artifacts RC redemptions are definately taking way longer than RC redemptions should take (Ultra wasn't bad this year).

Question 1: Do all Upper Deck Hockey Boxes(ie. Trilogy, SPGU, Artifacts, ICE...etc) have redemptions in them? Pulled them just out of Trilogy, Artifacts, and SP Authentic.

Not all hockey boxes have them... Black Diamond, Upper Deck Series 1/2, comes to mind.

Question 2: I have redeamed about 5 or 6 redemptions in the past month. About how long, in your experience, does it take to actually receive these redemptions, and any problems with them?

It really depends... previously, I have had pretty quick redemptions. Meaning once I have redeemed them, they are mostly in stock, or take a month or two to be in stock. Lately though, it hasn't been that good for me (9 redemptions waiting right now, 1 just in stock, 1 replacement requested, 11 total!)

Question 3: Which boxes, in your experience, gave you the best redemptions as in value? The most valuable one I have gotten sadly is a SP Authentic Dual Auto of Bobby Clarke/Ron Hextall.

It really depends... in personal experience, I would say OPC Premier (sort of pulled a redemption of a Malkin quad auto patch /5)

Question 4: Do redemptions you pull just apply for the box that you pull it out of? Or, have you or can you pull a redemption for lets say, UD Black, out of a box of UD Trilogy? I never have, but am curious.

Never pulled a different product redemption out of a box... wouldn't be surprised if that happened though

Question 5: Does anything good ever actually come from an Artifacts Rookie Redemptions? Are they auto or just regular redemption cards? Are they just from Artifacts or other types?

Depends on who you pull... if it's a big guy, then yes it's a good pull. Also what they did last year... they had redemptions for regular /599 rookies, but their stock depleted and they made parallels!

1. Pretty much every product that features autographs will have redemptions in it. This is due to UD not getting cards back from the players (if they're hard-signed autos) before the product is released. There can also be redemptions if they run out of previously signed stickers and are awaiting more to come back in the mail.

2. It depends on what you're redeeming. If it's a rookie redemption, every product except for Artifacts is now live. If it's an auto it can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple years depending on the individual player.

3. The multi-player autos in SP Authentic tend to bring in huge value, as do (of course) those from The Cup. I read a couple days ago that the Carey Price/Patrick Roy/Martin Brodeur SOTT Triples from last year's SPA has now gone live - that will be a huge card.

4. Redemptions for product A will only be found in product A, product B in product B. You won't get a redemption for a Trilogy auto in a pack of Black Diamond.

5. Take a look at last year's redeemed rookies list from Artifacts - Price, Kane, Toews, Gagner, etc. Because Artifacts comes out fairly early in the season they issue the redemptions in order to get the best batch of rookies possible. You'll notice that at this time there is no Artifacts RC for Stamkos, Brunnstrom, Schenn, etc. - all of these guys will be among the redeemed rookies crop.

One thing to add is, if you pull the redemption there still a chance that UD will not give it to you. They will says a few different things and replace it with some other card which in turn is most likely someone else's redemption and the whole story all over again.

Also, one other question. I called UD Customer Service about a couple damaged cards that I have. All pulled out of one box of 08/09 Masterpieces. Both Jsy cards one being a parallel, and 2 other parallels. All 4 were pretty bad shape,(rips, dents, and so on...) They told me to send all the cards to them, and write a letter explaining why I am doing so. And also added in a couple other things that came to mind that I wanted to comment on.
What do they do for you when this happens? Do they send you back 4 of the same cards that you sent them? Or do they send you one card at the same or higher value? I would have to imagine that they do something for your inconvenience and having to ship them cards that you BOUGHT from them. I wrote that I specifically did not want those same cards and how cranky I was about the whole situation, because I constantly get damaged cards this that and the other thing.

I swear I saw something like that too. That is why I was asking... They may just randomly insert them into things.... wasnt it a UD Black of Crosby or something

That's because the "Black Ice" redemptions were specifically inserted (announced at that) into Ice last year as a preview for 08-09 Black.

Regarding the redemption process, it can vary depending on the card but generally speaking, if they have copies of your damaged card(s) in stock they will replace them straight across. I had to submit a Gorges Exclusives last year because of some corner chipping and they issued a new one with a different serial number on it. It's the scenarios in which they don't have replacement stock that things can get a little hairy. They will usually ask you what players/teams you collect in advance so that if they can't replace the exact cards, at least you'll get something you like out of it - the card will generally be in the same value range, so don't expect a Price Limited Logos (if you're a Habs fan) from The Cup as a replacement for sending in a damaged Bill Guerin SPGU patch. Sometimes they really come through and deliver, but there have been a couple instances of Wings fans putting in redemption replacement requests and getting Avalanche cards instead. They will from time to time send you an extra card (I think just about everybody has a copy of the Crosby/Ovechkin refractor card) or a couple packs for the troubles.

Yea thats what I thought. The lady didnt specifically tell me what to write or anything about teams, she just told me to write a letter and mail it in with the cards. But I had enough common sense to put down what I collected, mentioning the word "Crosby" several times haha. We'll see what happens and I will keep it updated in this thread.

Just out of curiousity, what are you sending in? You may not get much in the way of Crosby stuff if it's a lower-end replacement, but hope springs eternal. I've seen a couple folks get Gretzky Letter Marks as a replacement for something far less awesome.

I would rather have 3 low end 5$ BV crosbys then what I sent in at this point haha. I sent this though:
08/09 Masterpieces-
Al Macinnis GU JSY
Lanny McDonald GU JSY Parallel #ed to 25
Bobby Orr Parallel #ed to 25
Ron Hextall #ed to 50

Or something Like that, I know two were #ed to 25 and 1 was #ed to 50.... or 2 #ed to 50 and 1 #ed to 25 haha.

There is nothing special about redemptions, the players just didn't return autos in time. The wait depends on the player, sometimes the time of year, and how on-the-ball Upper Deck is with handling the shipments. You won't see them as much in products that use sticker autos, like Black Diamond and Series 1/2 mentioned above. Sometimes the cards are not produced after all, and they're replace it with something else according to what they feel is a fair value.

Yea, I know what you mean. Haha I didnt even know UD 1 and 2 HAD auto cards in it until I pulled one and was like wth. But I dont know, there is just alot of hype surrounding the whole redemption thing. 9 times outta ten whenever I watch someone pull one outta like Trilogy or whatever its like OMG what is it. And it seems like, for example, that how the SP Authentic supposedly has like the "8 auto card" 4 on each side. I really doubt they would put that in a box to be honest. You would imagine that would have to be a redemption. Like I pulled a SOTT Dual Auto Redemption out of that product.
Granted yea, sometimes you get garbage ones too. I got a Thomas Vokoun Ice Scripts the other day haha. But Most of the time when I pull one, its better then most of the autos I got in that product. "Except Roy Ice Scripts"
I feel it's just the anticipation of "what is it, it could be ANYTHING" sort of look on it when you pull it before you look at the name.

Actually they did last year, and I know the guy who has all three copies of the one featuring Ovechkin ;)
