I was at the game Saturday night to watch my Leafs beat the Habs pretty badly.
Even though Carey Price was sitting the bench on this game, he got booed during the video introduction of the whole team. There is no love for Carey Price in Montreal. There is no love for most of the team right now. Except Maxim Lapierre, he played a good game. The montreal fans are very passionate about their team ( which is why I like to watch the Leafs play at the Bell Center, great atmosphere and surprisingly, alot of Leafs fans make the trip to the Bell Center) but they sure can turn on a player in a hurry.

My question is for the collectors who have the high end product. Do you fear that prices will plummett if the Habs miss the playoffs and Price does not bounce back? What do you do with your cards? Sell at a loss, pray the Price improves his play?

P.S. Martin Gerber played quit well and Halak looked weak . Will Bob Gainey survive and have a job next year?

The demand and hobby value of Carey Price in card shows have already dropped like a rock. People are not crazy, they know it is the time to throw away the cards of Carey Price before he reachs the value of Jim Carey. Halak is a bit more popular than 6 months ago, but value is still low (The Cup RC #/249 3 colors for about $60). The only way Carey Price could get a return to initial value is with a Vezina Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy and/or with a Stanley Cup. However, considering the team lineup, it won't be possible in a near future for any Montreal Canadiens goalies.

I definitely have a feeling Mason could be taking over top spot over Price in terms of BV... especially since he has a legitimate shot at three different individual trophies!

I don't speak for everybody, just myself, when it comes to collecting Carey: I could care less what Beckett says about the "values" of his cards. When you go to eBay, you still face a bidding war every time out, and even though you may be able to get a few items cheaper today than you could a few months ago, that's as much a reflection of an oversaturated market, a bad economy, and a hobby sophomore slump that pretty much everybody goes through. He is and will remain the #1 goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, and he isn't going anywhere nor is he going the way of Jim Carey. The Pollyannas of the world that want to jump off the bandwagon? Let them. More room for Shane & I to flex our hobby muscle. The simple fact is that until the game against Ottawa he'd been playing quite fine and looked to be back in form. Everybody in Montreal was starting again to sing his praises, including the media. Lost that shootout to the Rangers and then to Ottawa and all of a sudden they're tossing him under the bus again.
Here's the thing with the Bell Centre faithful and most Habs fans, and on this one I do speak for all of us - we have seen what this current team is capable of doing and we have very long memories when it comes to the greatness of our team. We expect nothing less than a hard effort and a win every night. When one of those things is lacking, the booing starts. When both of them are lacking, it amplifies big time. There's an old motto when it comes to the Habs: we support them through everything, win or tie. Well, there aren't ties anymore.
Just watch: he'll reel off six wins in a row and stuff will start jumping again. Greatness isn't measured in the course of a week or two weeks.

I definitely do believe that Price will develop into a very solid number one goaltender no doupt. If I had Price cards I'd hold on to them until the Montreal Canadiens in general improve so Price isn't getting bashed by the media everyday.

The Montreal fan expectations are very high, wish us Leaf fans had the same... actually had the lady sitting next to me slap my knee when I cheered for the first Leafs goal! I think she was only kidding???

From what I saw, Price will have to win 6 in a row to get some confidence back.

It's funny. I was at the Game Saturday night (neither a Leafs nor a Habs fan, but that's beside the point). Price was booed when he name was announced in the opening linups...... but where we were sitting (in the 300s) there were chants of 'Carey, Carey, Carey!' after the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Leaf goals.

I personally think Price will be fine.... both in the NHL, and in the hobby.

Yea his value will never be the same. Not only because of his play, but because it simply started out way to high. I had an Spx Rc I got in a trade from Karine, and thankfully I unloaded that for $130 the day before the All Star Game. Today those barely sell for $70. Now his stuff is dirt cheap. I have an Ultimate auto of his that I dont even have motivation to move because it is pretty close to worthless.

Every major rookie comming into the league has a inflated hobby value. Over time this value drops regardless of play. Perfect examples of this are Sid, Ovy, Malkin, Fleruy, Stall. Do I need to go on? If your looking to make money in this hobby don't collect players from this era. Do it becasue you love the guy or team but not for the card value, you never win. If you want your dollars to stay at a level playing field then buy good vintage material. It pretty much stays the same and by vintage I mean cards before 1976. And select RC's form the later 70's and 80's. Those cards have already took their hit long ago so they really don't move down often. Price is going to be a good goalie and will retain the #1 job, but now is not the time to buy his stuff. I just think it's going to go lower and lower I think if they don't make the playoffs you will be able to get his stuff dirt cheap. So I would wait and see. A one Clr cup RC just went for 560ish. and it guides for what 2000? A good rule of thumb is never buy wax when it first comes out, unless you want to take a beating like most of us have. It's like the lottery or gambling, sometimes you get a big hit and it keeps you comming back for more but in the end they always win. I started to collect cards back in the 90's when there were thousand dollar inserts. Now I have a box full of inserts that were big dollars but now are just pretty to look at becasue they have little or no value except to set builders or individual player collectors. So boys be smart with your cash in these economic times buy stuff that means something to you instead of wanting to get a big hit and then try to flip it, you will be happier in the long run.

This is one example why no one should get into the hobby to make money. As something like this will sour you every time. Collect what you collect because you love the player, team, the hobby, not the dollars associated with the cards.
