After seeing this last night, I may have to seriously re-consider my agenda regarding the Habs Inks set.

$355 for Guy Lapointe.

Wow.

There is no way I can possibly compete with that.

I may have to settle for 60 and just forget about the SPs. There's no more of the product here so I don't have a hope of pulling one.

And there's another auction running that still has 3 days to go at $160.

I hear ya. I am at the same place when it comes to the Masterpieces autos.

That seems rediculous for a lapointe auto. Whats the print run on that card?

I didnt find the masterpieces to be to outrageous the brown orr auto was only went for $200 on ebay. Ive been collecting 06/07 parkhurst for a couple years now and those are much tougher I haven't seen alot of the cards that aren't even sp.

They haven't stated the run (naturally) but the mere mention of SP in this set has been enough to incite a frenzy.

They don't have anymore of the Centennial set in the city Richard?

Local shop down here still has tins, and is supposedly getting another shipment in not too long from now.

My local WalMart is flooded with retail tins of Centennial, but at $34+tax per tin! I might try one some day to take a shot at pulling an auto, but for a 10-pack blaster it's pricey.

Ouch. I know that Guy Lapointe was a good (even great) defenceman in his day..... but $355 ?? That's insane. SP or not.

There's never a time limit to complete sets. I always forget that. I went buckwild collecting Schenn...but the cards that I missed will always pop up again. Probably at a lower price too, seeing as how the initial craze would most likely be over by that time.

That's actually a decent price. Zellers had them for $40. And it is a situation in which you will get your money back - the banners sell for 15-20 on eBay, and you can generally get $3 per SP (more for Rocket, Dryden, Roy) - even if you don't get an auto.

Rich,
I would wait for the frenzy to cool down and try to pick them up in time. Over time the prices will drop unless the print run is extremely low. There is always a deal or two to be had for the patient person.

That's true, if I have to sit at 60 for a while I can do that. Heck, getting to that point will be a challenge given how well Beliveau & Patrick are doing, to say nothing of Scotty Bowman!

I've been lucky enough to pull a Youppi auto out of those, I just have to let my wife choose the tin, she has the magic touch...

This is the perfect set to lose 50% in value over the next year. Way overpriced.

RGM81
04-07-2009, 02:11 PM
It may lose some, but nowhere near 50%. Given how scarce it became so quickly, it's not as if we're going to be seeing people cracking open cases of it in a year's time like you can with just about any other product out there. Some of the autos have definitely cooled off, but the big names and the SPs will always stay hot.

Rarity will stay, but the demand will drop because newer products will be released. The print run is low, a lot of short prints, but higher-end products offer rarer cards. With a lower demand, prices will automatically drop on markets like eBay. On card show, some dealers can decide to hold on their cards until they got their prices, but on an auction pattern the lower demand will affect the ending price in my opinion.

I'm actually really impressed how much value has been in this product. I've opened 1 box, and 1 tin of it..... and unlike any other box I can remember.... my cards are worth roughly what I paid for the box. I didn't lose 50% of the value just by opening.

I agree on this about the value of the box/tin versus the value of the cards inside.

I wholeheartedly agree. Even if you don't pull an auto or jersey out of your tin, you're still going to get $3 per insert and $15-$20 for your banner. It's possibly the best bang for your buck product UD's put out in the last several years - they certainly hit a home run catering to us Habs fans with this one!

I'm no Habs fan..... not even close. I thought the idea of the set was pretty cool, so I bought a box within a week (or so) of when they came out. (Wish I'd bought all 5 that the store had left. Getting them for $100 CND now is impossible).

I got two Autos with a combined BV of $50, a Jersey that lists for $15, and one of the #/100 parallels (let's say $5 on it). Then I've got 24 SPs.... worth between $3 and $15 each.... so let's say $3.... just to stay on the low end. The SPs alone from that first box are worth $72..... the hits (I didn't get anyone very good) are worth another $70...... and then there's still my base.

And like you said, the Tins are good too. At $3 per SP..... I get $30 worth of cards right away, plus $15-$20 for the banner, plus all the base. I was a little annoyed at the $45 cost (considering I paid $99 for the hobby box) but still not bad at all, when you compare it to virtually any other product from the last few years.

Well no you're not a Habs fan, but if you decide to move what you've pulled, you'll easily be able to find a willing taker.

And let's be real here: this set was made with me, and people like me, in mind! LOL

I am not enough rich to compensate people that doesn't want to pay a fair price. So the overall product will lose 50% of its cash value on next year. $355 for Guy Lapointe is only related to product hype. Tell me who will pay that high on next year for Guy Lapointe (even if this card is a 1/1)?

30ranfordfan
04-08-2009, 12:48 PM
You're right about that one, I think. Chris Nilan too.... I think he's listed for more than $200, becuase he's an SP.

There are going to be set collectors, trying to get them all. That's going to drive the SP prices up like crazy right now. Once the hype is done, and the set builders have them..... whatever is left will go, I think, for substantially less.

The price per hobby box is $175 CDN before shipping and taxes. That is a lot but the SP autos price are crazy!

Steve Shutt SP auto will fetch more than $35 with all the set collectors competing for it. Over $100 for sure.

Given that the two Lapointes that went auction-style finished at $355 and $361, respectively, that's a pretty safe bet.

Hi guys,

I've got the Beliveau jersey. Part of my PC, havn't seen any on the 'bay, but i just signed up two weeks ago.. Any idea on what it's going for.

Bought one box and opened it with my son telling him all i want is the Beliveau cards. Talk about getting lucky.

Was thinking about moving it, and picking it up again at a later date (and hopefully the 1/2 value rule).
