With the passing of former NHLer Walt Poddubny early this weak, I thought I'd take a look on eBay, and see how quickly people are trying to cash in. Check this auction out:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/WALT-PODDUBNY-R-I-P-Rangers-Devils-AUTOGRAPH_W0QQitemZ230332864448QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ LH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item230332864448&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318

With 3 days left in the auction, an autographed card of Poddubny is selling for just over $21. Would this guy have even got $5 for it a month ago?

Interesting to see that people are going that high on an IP auto with no guarantee of authenticity. Now, obviously his starting bid was a lot lower than that, so it's perhaps not entirely fair to lambaste him (which I know that you're not doing here, but someone inevitably will) for putting it up there - people who are Leafs fans or fans of any of the other teams he played for will want to get some memorabilia of him know that Podubny passed away. It's not getting into Luc Bourdon territory where people were listing his stuff with BINs at very inflated prices in order to cash in on his tragic passing. That was blatant, this is more along the lines of somebody giving somebody else the opportunity to grab some memorabilia while making a little bit of extra cash in the process.

Yeah.... I do agree with you. The start bid was low, so certainly the price has only gone up because of demand.

He was a Leaf, and Oiler, a Devil, and I'm not sure if he played anywhere else or not.... and I'm sure there will be fans of all three teams trying to get something (depending on the scope of their collection).

The IP auto though.... it's pretty much the only thing that's going to be out there. He wouldn't have any certified (in pack) autographs.... he's not a big enough name for someone like Frozen Pond or AJs to have brought in to sign things..... so I would think IP autos are going to be virtually the only stuff out there.

I know there isn't a COA offered with it, but are they really worth anything anyway? I mean.... if I'm selling you a card of any player.... that have an IP auto on..... do you feel safer about buying it, if I offer a COA too? I would think that anyone who's willing to forge an autograph, to make money on it, would be more than happy to write a COA for the same card.

This is a very good point. A COA is really only worth the paper it's printed on when you're dealing with unscrupulous people. If I'm buying something from Ben's Legit House of Autos I'm putting a lot less stock in his COA than I would from a Frozen Pond or Channel Sports Inc. (where all the Price 31 Authentic autos come from).

You get what you pay for. I recently came across a large collection of cards and found what appears to be a Gretzky IP auto in it. However, after doing some searching on the net, I feel it may be an autopen graph. Someone more than likely sent the card into the Kings (pictured uni) and received the auto back from the team.

I'd like to trade it or sell it, but I feel an obligation, since I don't believe it's the real McCoy. I don't have a CoA (although I could probably print one up and offer it as such), but I have this thing about integrity, so that's not going to happen.

If and when I do offer it up, it'll be described completely as I just did and take my chances.

If you feel so inclined you could probably send it in to an authenticating service and find out the real deal about the card.

Where was ebay when John Kordic passed away. I had(still do somewhere) his auto along with half the Habs at the time on their Summer Baseball tour program.

Players that I could think at the top of my head to along with his
Chris Chelios
Stephane Richer
one of the Lebeaus
Gainey I believe
Pierre Mondou
and bunch more.

When Bourdon passed away, his autos almost tripled...whether it was IP base cards or a The Cup Gold Rainbow AU Patch /4...
