View Full Version : BREAK THE BOX
BGray 04-17-2003, 06:46 AM I was thinking it would be cool to have a BOX breakdown thread. If anyone opens a box of cards and cares to break it down feel free to do it here. Please only post on this thread if you have a box to mention.
You might want to put:
-# of cards per pack and # of packs per box
-% of set completed or remaining cards to finish
-amount of doubles
-amount of inserts
-amount of rookies
or anything else you might find interesting. It should be a nice source of info for all other collectors here.
Thanks,
BGray
mookigremlin 04-21-2003, 01:19 AM Yeah that sounds like a good idea. hehe. I guess I will start this off. I had picked up 4 boxes of 2000 Topps Gallery Football. I have opened 2 of them so far. I can't remember exactly what names on some of the cards that I got out of which box but I will state what I do know. This is what I got:
2000 Topps Gallery FB box 1:
6 Masters
6 Artisans
12 Rookie's
1 Player's Private Issue - Corey Dillon #25 021/250
1 Gallery of Heroes - Randy Moss #GH6
3 Heritage - T. Aikman #H2, R. Moss #H3, P. Manning #H7
1 Auto- Marshall Faulk #MF
2000 Topps Gallery FB box 2:
5 Masters
6 Artisans
13 Rookie's
2 Player's Private Issue - G. Crowell #29 181/250, R. Williams #120 136/250
2 Exhibitations - S. Davis #GE4, J. Smith #GE11
3 Heritage - M. Faulk #H1, T. Aikman #H2, K. Warner #H10
Now after sorting through both of the boxes I had come up with a full base set w/o SP's (1-125). I pulled 11 of the 12 Masters (126-137) for the set with 5 left over as dups. Pulled 12 of the 13 Artisans (138-150) with 7 left over as dups. And pulled 22 of the 25 with 14 left over as dups. Now with all of the packs there was 1 checklist per pack. There are 6 total checklists for the set in which I had pulled only 4 of them. They were #1, #3, #5, #6. Each of the checklists have a certain number of points that you were able to use in an auction they had. Welp that is pretty much it for those 2 boxes. If you have any questions about them just let me know. :)

It would all depend on who it is really. The Rookie's weren't worth much since there were so many. The most expensive RC is Pennington at $8.00. And with like lets say the Masters Favre and remember it is part of the set and not numbered books for $4 while his base card is worth $2.50. Now with the Player's Private Issue the multipliers breaks down like this:
Stars 3x to 8x hi
Young Stars 2.5x to 6x hi
Subsets 2x to 5x hi
Rookies 2.5x to 6x hi
Now with the inserts they are nothing great but nice non the less. Since I used Favre above I will continue with him. His 2000 Topps Gallery Gallery of Heroes books for $10 while his 2000 Topps Gallery Heritage Proofs books at $12. Now I will assume that almost everyone knows how to use Beckett.com to look up prices so I will not go any futher with them. But one thing I am going to do is give you the odds that are on the packs for pulling inserts and such.
Player's Private Issue: 1 out of 16 packs
Gallery Exhibitions: 1 out of 32 packs
Topps Heritage: 1 out of 12 packs
Heritage Proofs: 1 out of 48 packs
Proof Positive: 1 out of 48 packs
Gallery of Heroes: 1 out of 24 packs
Auto card group A: 1 out of 236 packs
Auto card group B 1 out of 2,849 packs
Overall Auto: 1 out of 218 packs
Press Plates: 1 out of 952 packs
Now with the press plates you have to remember that there are 4 different colors per card.
Ohh yeah. The auto that I had pulled books at $50. I don't know if he came from group A or B though. hehe.
Welp I hope that helps everyone out some more. Any more questions just let me know. :)

IggyWH 05-09-2003, 01:09 PM Okay... I got my box of 02 Donruss Football today in the mail from the NAXCOM credits and here's what I got :
5 cards per pack - 24 packs per box
Base Set (1-200) - It seems like I've got most of the base set with little doubles but I really didn't go through and sort them because the base set is only worth $20... really not worth the effort.
Rated Rookies (201-300) - After starting the box off real slow in these, I ended up finishing with 12 so you get like 1 per every other pack. The ones I got were - Betts, Jammer, Jefferson, Garrard, Gordon, Lelie, Marquise Walker, Davenport, Freeney, Charles, Doman, and Fisher.
Inserts - I pulled a total of 4 inserts. They say that you get an insert every 2 packs and if that includes the rated rookies then I guess I did pretty decent.
All-Time Gridiron Kings - Jim Kelly 1563/2000
Gridiron Kings - 1163/2000
Executive Producer - Marshall Faulk 12/1000
Career Stat Line (parallel) William Green 244/343
All in all I guess I can't complain since the box was free and I got a few decent rookies. I didn't pull the 2 rookies I wanted though in Portis and Mungro but oh well, can't win them all!
...I swear, why can't I ever get lucky. After writing about this, I did a search on Yahoo for other 02 Donruss Football reviews and look what this box had : http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamCollectiblesReviewsFootball/fb_don02-can.html all the rookies I wanted and a GREAT insert!
mookigremlin 05-12-2003, 10:55 PM Heyas Iggy and thanks for sharing your break on the box that you got. As you said you could not complain for what you got out of a free box. hehe. Could of been better but could of been worse.
Now on with the box I got from Naxcom with my freebie money. I had bought a box of 2002 Upper Deck MVP Hobby Football. First of all I would like to say that they are actually nice looking cards for the money. They have a basic and simple look on the front with most of the players in an action pose. As many know it is a 300 card set with 47 of that being the rookies and 3 check lists to finish of the set. The rookies were not seated in any particular order.
Now here is the basic break down of the box. There are 24 packs per box and 8 cards per pack. The first 250 cards are your base set, the next 47 are your rookies and the last 3 are your checklists.
HOB = Hobby RET = Retail
Rookies - (27) with 1 double. The best RC's were Carr, Harrington and Portis
MVP Gold #ed to only 25 copies HOB - (1) Jerry Rice 10/25
MVP Silver #ed to 100 copies HOB - (2) Travis Taylor 016/100, Kevin Kasper 029/100
MVP Prosign #ed to 127 copies HOB - (0)
MVP Souvenirs 1:48 HOB/RET - (0)
MVP Souvenirs Doubles 1:48 HOB - (1) W.Dunn/M.Alstott
Team MVP 1:6 HOB/RET - (4) Vick, R.Moss, R.Williams, S.Alexander
Top 10 Performers 1:12 HOB/RET - (2) Brady, M.Strahan
Welp over all I believe that I did very well with the box. I am not sure if I got a full base set out of it yet so sorry for not having that info here. I really would have liked to have pulled an auto BUT the Rice gold and the double jersey very much made up for it.
Now I had tried to find another review just as Iggy did but I was not able to come up with anything. So Iggy, if you would be able to find another box breat down of 2002 Upper Deck MVP FB it would be great if you could post it.
Welp that is it for me here so take care and keep those updates of your box breaks coming in. :)

YankeeBob63 05-18-2003, 11:23 PM 2003 Splendid Splinters box break
I think Fleer has some of the best looking card designs and the premiere of the Splendid Splinters product is going to be another big hit with collectors.
OK, enough talk... here's the goods:
Wood #'d card: #106 Chipper Jones #'d 300/499
Wood Splendid Splinter: #6 Alfonso Soriano!
Home Run Club: Sammy Sosa #3
Home Run Club GU: Jason Giambi #'d 524/599
Family Tree: #3 Sandy Alomar, Jr., - Roberto Alomar, #6 Bobby Bonds - Barry Bonds
Building Blocks: 128 Tim Olson, 129 Michel Hernandez (Yanks!), 130 Michael Hessman, 131 Clint Barmes.
Knothole Gang non-GU: Jason Giambi #4
Knothole Gang GU: Alfonso Soriano patch serial #'d 86/99!
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/RETORBA/03soriano.jpg
--Base set complete from one box.
This has been one of the best box breaks I've had in a long time! The Soriano patch card pull had my 12 year-old son jumping out of his chair. We pulled some super nice Yankees from this box.
The box break started out with the Chipper Jones #'d card and at first I thought.... "Oh, nooooo!.... not again! I'm plagued with the Chippee disease again." ....but then the box break went on to bigger and better (Yankees) things. Woo-hoo!
You can very easily detect which packs have GU'd in them. Fleer didn't put any "dummy" inserts in these packs. "Pack-feelers" will have a field day with these packs. That's the only negative thing I came across.
Bob
john1170 05-19-2003, 02:11 PM I figured since I just bought 3 different boxes at a show on Sat I would share some of my pulls with everyone.

ufgator12279 05-31-2003, 04:45 PM Accidently bought 3 boxes of 2003 UD Honor Roll Basketball 8 pack boxes (and not the regular 24 pack boxes). So wasn't expecting much, but here goes!
1. Kobe Bryant & Vince Carter Tremendous Talents foil inserts, plus other various foil inserts.
2. Nowitzki/Finley/Nash Triple Warm-up jersey card (1:120)!!!
3. Paul Pierce Principal Autographs/Jersey redemption card (1:480)!!!
Not bad for a total of 24 packs instead of 72 hehe. I've had really good luck w/ Honor Roll...they are cheaper cards, but I have gotten 3 other full 24 pack retail boxes and got lots of dual warm-up cards (including a dual Jordan/Kobe), and they are tons of inserts...the way cards are suppose to be made, fun for the collector with lots of variety.
Also opened 5 packs of the new 2003 Playoff Prestige FB cards:
1. Boss Bailey base RC
2. Kurt Warner Gridiron Heritage insert
3. Brian Griese Game Day Jerseys GU
4. Randy Moss Game Day Jerseys GU
5. Jerome Bettis/Kordells Stewart Back Field Tandems Dual Jerseys GU seq. #ed 113/400!!!
Not bad for only 5 packs...I wonder what else was in that box hehe.
Vic
Molina00 06-01-2003, 09:35 PM Last year I bought a HTA box of Topps 2002 Series 2
I believe it was 12 packs of 35 cards per pack.
1 insert in each pack.
I don't really remember much about it except that I pulled a Duke Snider auto that is worth $120.
Also a vintage 1960 Whitey Ford.
wdwain 06-03-2003, 07:37 PM Bought one of those $9.99 Variety Pack Football Boxes from Kmart and pulled these:
Vick 2001 Score Rc
Anthony Thomas 2002 Heads Up "Behind the Numbers" Insert
Andra Davis 2002 Prestige Rc
Bart Star 2001 Stadium Club "Highlight Reels" Insert
And last but not least:
John Elway 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars #50 "Longevity" #'d 26/50 Bv $60.00
I really like these Variety boxes! I have had real good luck with them.
Kmench1 06-03-2003, 07:42 PM Got a blaster box of Fleer Authentix. 6 Packs 5 Cards
Pulled a GU jersey of Eric Hinske and Hideki Matsui Club Box Ticket to the Majors #100 (sales-$100 $135 $145) in the SAME PACK
Ticket Stub- Tori Hunter
Donruss Classics Blaster Box-
7 packs 4 cards
1 card worth mentioning. Rookie AU #500
cardinalfan15 06-12-2003, 01:14 PM I bought a box of All Time Fan Favorites Retail off of eBay for $50.
Got no doubles, one refractor (Darren Daulton), and two autographs (Stan Musial and Fergie Jenkins). I was very impressed with this box and would have had the complete set if there were enough in the box. There were 24 packs, 6 cards a pack.
Boinks 06-14-2003, 05:00 PM 03 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites
Box Topper Relic 1:1 box (George Foster Bat $10)
Sequentially #'d White Bordered Refractor 1:18 packs(Joe Pepitone #089/299 $5)
Fan Favorites Autographs:
Group A 1:218 packs (Phil Niekro $50)
Team Tops Legends Autographs:
Group N 1:265 packs (Johnny Sain $15)
Single Cards: 141/150 (94%)
Doubles: 0
Fun box to crack! I beat the odds on the autographs and pulled a Yankee legend too! The coalation is perfect and I got no doubles. I like this set better than the last two years because they used unseen pictures and classic topps designs from the last 50 years. It wasnt just reprints like the last couple years.
YankeeBob63 06-15-2003, 11:18 AM My wife picked up one $13.99 2003 UD Vintage box from Toys-R-Us yesterday... on sale for $9.99.
I pulled this:
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/RETORBA/hudson03vintage.jpg
The Hudson GU'd cap card has a piece of string showing and it appears the cap was autographed. You can see the silver writing on the cap piece.
and I pulled a nice Mike Piazza SP...

When I saw the Williams I thought I might have pulled a relic, but alas no. My favorite pulls are the two Superstar Flashback cards. Pulled a Twins rookie auto:P Twins autos are SO hard to get! /sarcasm
I like the set design this year, just enough foil and just enough gloss. The backs only show up to 3 years of player stats but all have a couple sentences about the star. I was mad about all the doubles I was seeing until I realized I had a complete set already.

ARG! It seems Twins fever has hit me and its worse than SARS :( Again pulled another autograph that I could have gotten with a 37 cent stamp, oh well. I live in North Dakota so maybe I can hop over to the next state and sell them at a card show lol. Favorite pulls are the Ichiro and Guerrero cards. I got 2 sets out of 2 boxes so the coallation is great, go Upper Deck! Now they need to apply the same techniques with Series 2 of the main set (I bought 3 boxes of Series 1 and still needed 8 cards for the set, and had around 600 doubles!).

Got the following:
---Clinton Portiss rookie

all in all, it wasn't what I was hoping for. But, I hadn't opened a box of cards in years, so I figured I'd get some boxes.
john1170 07-02-2003, 12:47 PM I was bored today at work so I went out for lunch and dropped $140 on a box of Finest basketball. Here's the outcome

Enigma 07-09-2003, 11:40 PM Hobby Box (20 packs/5 cards)
Box states: Three embroidered Patch Cards Plus One All-Star Patch Box Topper Per Box On Average
Base Set Complete - 79% (95 of 120)
Dupes - 5
Subsets:
All-Star Selection (15 available) - Luis Gonzalez

Rookie Innovations (11 available) - Shane Bazzell
Inserts:

I beat the odds, which is cool. Also, I haven't opened the box topper yet. I'm debating on whether I should or not. The package says 2 of 73 All-Star Patch Cards Per Pack which sounds like there is actually 2 patch cards in it. Not sure if I should open it or not.
Too bad there no prices on these yet...:D
gioperation 07-16-2003, 04:33 PM Ok, this was 1 gu'd per box and 1 box topper

The cards have a simple look to them. Nothing great. The players are all in action including the insert I pulled. Over all I feal that the 2002 set looked much better. Here is a list of the rookies and the insert.

pwaldo 07-24-2003, 03:57 PM I broke a 2002 Topps Traded box to try and get the Hot Willis rookie card.
Well the box bombed but it was only $49 which I thought was a steal.
24 packs/10 cards per pack
Just to let you know about 6 of the packs had cards that were basically all damaged. If I had spent more than $49 I would have been totally pissed at this break.
8 gold #D: NO ROOKIES but I did get a Scott Rolen and Juan Gonzalez
2 Buyback cards: Both were from 1998 Topps Traded and were of no name guys (would have been better if they were just regular cards)
1 Chrome Refractor: A RC on the Phillies forgot his name but he wasn't listed anyways
Regular cards: No Willis so I was kinda disappointed because I went through 240 cards and didn't get a single one.
I did get 2 Jesse Foppert, 1 Gavin Floyd, and 2 Chris Snelling but they were just the regular ones and not chrome.
Chrome: Basically sucked except for the Refractor guy. Didn't know that 1 Chrome per pack was going to be a sucky traded player which Beckett for some reason lists for about the same price.
Hopefully somebody that I guy in the box will become great later on but for now the box was a bomb even though I only paid $49 for 24 packs.

smt1192 08-23-2005, 09:49 AM You know how if a card is serial numbered to the players number the card increases in value, how much does the card increase?
Seablazer 08-23-2005, 09:37 PM That's one of those stupid things that shouldn't happen, but does...
Big deal if a card is numbered at the players actual jersey number.
Just like first printed (1/xx), and last printed (10/10)...
I personally wouldn't pay extra for a certain numbered card. The card will have the same BV no matter what.
smt1192 08-24-2005, 08:58 PM thanks seablazer

not bad for a box I paid $108 for
pafan 12-27-2005, 11:58 AM I recieved a gift certificate to the card store and instead of buying a box I picked up some supplies and a few packs of cards. While I beat the odds, I certainly didn't pull anything that's life-altering.

Box Breaks (http://www.baseballcardcollector.net/index.php/content/blogsection/2/25/)
It's not a shop and there are no affiliate links, I like web design as much as I do card collecting, so I've combined the two hobbies. If links aren't allowed, let me know and I'll cut and paste the content here.
