Final Ratings (out of 5):

Base Set – 5
Fun – 2.5
Overall Design – 3.5
Value – 4.5
Rebuy – 3.5

Total – 19/25 (76%)

The base card in Bowman '48 is based of the card design from the original 1948 Bowman cards. Players are pictured with either a blue or red background. On the back of each card is a little tidbit about the player called "Bowman Facts." While the current/retired players are featured in their uniforms, the rookies are showcased as a head shot only. The set is completed by a series of Play Cards, which shows a drawing of a play and the back discusses how it works.

Other than the parallels, there are not any inserts. This is probably due to it being a throwback set and the original set didn't have inserts. However, you do get three autographs per box. You will get either an autograph, an autograph/relic or an autograph/patch. The set list is trimmed down, so odds are you will get something nice out of each box.

It is difficult to truly rate a throwback release as it is encapsulating much of the original release. Older sets didn't offer a lot of the glitz and glamour that you see in modern sets. However, I did note a couple of things. One, there is what appears to be an uncorrected error in the set. Card 68, Spencer Hawes, has a picture of Gerald Wallace on the front. I say appears to be an uncorrected error as two were in the box. Secondly, way too many duplicate cards. When you can almost complete two base sets, it's too much. Would have been better to release this with 18 packs instead of 24.

Once again, I'd like to thank our wonderful sponsors at Topps for giving us the opportunity to open and review this release. If interested in more information on this release or others, check them out today at www.topps.com (http://www.topps.com).

Great break and review! I haven't seen a bad review of this product yet - every break I have read, there has been some great auto pull - and this was no exception! Being able to pull 3 autographs from one box, and paying less than $90, is really a great deal, especially when you pull someone like Bill Russell.

Thanks Topps!

Nice autos!! Looks like the Josh Smith sticker is one from 07-08 Topps Echelon??? First time I've seen that on any of these cards, or any other than Echelon in that case. Overall I really like the product, and it's the easiest way to get an autograph of Bill Russell, instead of paying hundreds on ebay for one or by getting him through a paid signing. Plus, all of the autographs in this product are not bad at all in the terms of player talent. The worst you can get is like Iggy, Ford, Josh Smith, etc. so that is pretty incredible at just $60 a box on average.

WOW...sweet break!! Again..Thanks to TOPPS for supplying such a sweet product.
Hmm...seems like Bill Russell was the 'Mass' auto in this product. One of the members here (Italy61587) Pulled '2' Bill Russells out of ONE box..lol. I think I saw another Russell from another member. Those 'Pattern Play' cards are ..........weird. I actually pulled one myself..lol.

Nice pulls so it's nice to see there are some nice hits.

I know this is based on the past but the designs are so boring with these cards, so I'm not really a fan of these. There are some heritage style cards that can be done, but these don't tickle my fancy at all.

I could see myself trying this one, and give everything I dont want to my little brother as he's a basketball guy... but as a Celtic fan I'd love another Russell :)

I like that they included a Mikan card that has the same photo as his 1948 RC. Its a plus that we get a whole base set from the box.
