View Full Version : Best Rookie to pick up in the offseason
BGray 03-13-2003, 11:20 AM What do you feel is the best rookie card to pick up from last years class during this offseason?
I personally think it is Clinton Portis. If you take a look at what he did at the end of the season it is phenominal!
He was probably the best RB in the NFL in the last 4 regular season games (I know Holmes was hurt).
Look for his cards to blow up at the beginning of next season.

john1170 03-13-2003, 12:02 PM Portis is a good choice. This guy was amazing. I don't know if you watched him at all but he has great moves. I saw him play almost every week and he was great. If you are going to pick someone else to buy, I would stick to QB's or RB's. The other positions never hold any value. I have seen more WR rookies start off high and plummet even if they are having great years.
wdwain 04-07-2003, 04:45 AM Portis is a game breaking back with amazing speed. He is the best in my book.
I also like William Green who turned it on at the end of the season!!!
mookigremlin 04-07-2003, 05:19 AM As everyone has said so far you have to go with Portis. There is not enough things to say about this one. I would also have to go with everyones favorite of Jeremy Shockey. He had surprised alot of people and looks to be a top player for years to come. :)

gioperation 04-07-2003, 09:04 AM don't forget about jerry porter he is learning from the best WR'ers in the game and I wonder what he will do once those guys retire and david carr when he gets a little more experience. also peppers, if he can stay clean is going to force for offenses to try to stop and you never can forget about the RB in tampa,(stephens) once they get rid of that bum down there.
podstock 04-07-2003, 01:54 PM I like both Clinton Portis of Denver and Jerry Porter of Oakland.
Having said that, for long term, I'd take Porter over Portiss. Think Terrell Davis --- superstar running back; severe knee injury, now out of football. Running backs, in general, are more often prone to severe career ending injuries.
But for the short term, I think Portis is a good buy and quick sell; all the while hoping he doesn't get injured. It doesn't hurt that he plays for Denver, which has a history of its RBs getting at least 1000 yards rushing every year --- Mike Anderson, Davis, etc.
The Vikes 04-24-2003, 12:31 AM It's going to be hard to find value in Portis. I think the question is who is the diamond in the rough. I kinda like Dante Stallworth, maybe Jonathon Wells. These are real pricey guys, and you might find them to be a good investment. I remeber when Tom Brady was a nobody, I picked up a low printed insert for $1 plus sase, and now that card books at $60.00. YES! I need more of those. Thanks for the great forum all!
radioheadfloyd 04-24-2003, 01:01 AM You got to go with the Broncos ;) Pick up Portis and Lelie ( even if his name is Ashley) Lelie has tons of speed and will be a great deep threat this year. Portis does have injury risk, but that is the case with all football players.
podstock 04-24-2003, 02:16 AM Lelie has FANTASTIC, Jerry Rice-like hands. Saw several of his game last season here on West Coast. He did awesome in the game that Hawaii won vs. David Carr's Fresno St. team
stkmtimo 04-24-2003, 10:02 AM You've got to look at Jeremy Shockey, his attitude and love of the game is amazing, and his stats speak for themselves. He's an amazing tight end who can catch almost any ball thrown to him, and he's a very valuable asset for the Giants. Just my two cents.

podstock 04-24-2003, 01:23 PM Shockey's one of a kind..has all the physical attributes to be even better than Todd Christensen of the Raiders.
But Shockey's pretty cocky...and that might be his downfall.
This is football, and you're one vicious, retaliatory hit away from being a spectator forever.
If he knows what's good for him, he's gonna act cocky on the sidelines, and not taunt other players.
Remember that play in playoffs vs the Niners, when Shockey caught the ball, headed for the goal line, then veered off to hit a 49er, Julian Peterson?
Peterson stopped him from scoring (although Giants scored on next play).
The point is...play to win, play to score. Don't go out of your way looking to hit a defender. That's not aggressive play; that's stupidity.
stkmtimo 04-24-2003, 01:38 PM I agree, but then look at Peterson who proceeds to do pushups on the field to show up the Giants. I guess it goes both ways.
